hi lains,
im seeking feedback on a recent project o mine. i've been working on this streaming platform called allsprk. it's supposed to be vaguely like having an old school tv experience except updated for 2018. all comments and feedback welcome

Looks pretty interesting. Are you planning on having a list of when TV shows are on? Also do you choose the shows or are you having them chosen randomly. It'd also be good if you could add some feature to increase the volume because lots of channels have really low volume even when the system volume is turned up all the way.

These CSS animations are very slow and it's annoying. Can't say anything else, I don't think I managed to make it work on my end.

Schway project, Lain! I'd love to see how this develops

thanks for the thing about the volume. i dug around and it turned out there was a bug that would lower the volume by 0.01 every time you switch a channel or refreshed. the way it works now is that on every page load or channel change it mutes the volume and then slowly raises it over 10 seconds up to the previous volume level that's set in a cookie.
i also disabled the slow volume increase and have it set to max on mobile because the volume is only able to be set by pressing the keyboard arrows up or down right now.

i believe the trippy HSL color rotation css animations are disabled for mobile but yeah the site does require some modest horsepower mostly for hls.js the 3rd party HLS live streaming library (no native support for HLS yet).
i'd guesstimate that the site is on par with twitch.tv in it's resource requirements. though, twitch is bloated AF so i'm not sure that's a good thing but eventually i'll try to get back around to optimize the js.. it's quite messy atm.
thanks for the feedback, i appreciate it

also about how it's picking what's being played..
they are randomly chosen from a list of about 20-30 series that i've transcoded to the standardized libx264/aac codec.
the backend then drills down and plays all of the episodes in the series until there are none left. after completion a new series is picked at random, some checks are done to make sure it's not already playing on another channel and then it repeats the whole process again.

This is really good but I have two issues
Put more stuff on rotation
I don't like full screen video

it's all just noise to me in opera broweser. It works ok in firefox

after i nail down all the browser stuff i've been thinking about fixing up the backend scripts for release so that anyone can stream a directory full of videos to their own channel and have the website on the front end dynamically add and remove them as they come online.
the only real dependency would be ffmpeg and a folder full of videos.
how do you mean the full screen video? mobile ?
thanks for helping me out

So you're going to release the site as software and let people set their own channels? that's really cool, if I was a webmaster i would set up my channel immediately.
With full screen I mean the video takes the whole active area of the page while in youtube videos are a frame of 480 or 720, I just don't like that but don't listen to me since its just a nitpick
Netrunner · 2018-01-15 22:59
I think there's still a volume bug. The volume suddenly dropped after watching a stream for a bit.
You should also make the controls more apparent. I only found the controls in a comment in the source code.

Also, it's weird that the left arrow key increases the channel number and the right decreases it. You also have a bug where if you get to channel 9, press left to increment the channel number, it loops back to channel 2, instead of channel 0. And pressing right on channel zero to decrement the channel number doesn't loop back to channel 9, but instead goes to channel 1.

I dig it lainon- this is what streaming should be like. Just beautiful.
Agree with >>6203 though, it's really counterintuitive to advance using Lkey and go back using Rkey.
Props on the lineup too- you've got some great stuff on there already!
Can't wait for you to release the source code- I'd like to play around with it!

thanks for this.. i didn't notice it at all for some reason.
i fixed the left / right arrow keys changing channels in the wrong direction and i also updated the scripting to correctly loop frorm 0 back to 9 when you looping through channels. you may need to clear your cache
i also enabled a chat interface that you can see while paused or by pressing the ctrl or alt keys. depending on feedback i might disable this again as i'm trying to keep the site footprint (cpu wise) as low as i can manage.
