Elixir thread version 2.0

Junichi Fujiwara · 2018-07-23 02:55
So I finally decided to learn how to make a dynamic website, and I started with Elixir. I'm a programmer but I mostly do data science stuff. I've only made static html websites before and now I want to make and publish dynamic websites. I've been going through the Programming Phoenix book and I built a video annotation site like in the book. But now I want to publish it. Anyone know a cost effective way to publish a dynamic website? Also general elixir and website making discussion.

Elixir is a lot easier language to use than any other functional language. As long as you avoid recursion for looping and use map/iterator functions instead it feels just like programming in Ruby. Ive kind of given up trying to tell people about Elixir as most people trying FP are fixated on Haskell. I would much rather use Elixir/Phoenix than Node for doing SPA's, I cant figure out why people would put up with promises as a way to deal with a ton of nested callback functions. >>9574 >Anyone know a cost effective way to publish a dynamic website? I think Heroku supports Elixir/Phoenix

>>9665 FYI, this is for phoenix 1.2 while the current version is 1.3. So you would want to downgrade your dependencies in the mix.exs file before continuing. Otherwise you'll come across a bunch of errors

>>9665 >>9667 Alright thanks anon. I'm going to learn Elixir using this. If I get a job you basically saved my life and it's all on you. and if I dont then uh I guess i'm on the street Elixir looks fun! PRogram program!

>>9901 Since it sounds like you are starting from zero, I would recommend Stephen Grider's Elixir/Phoenix course on Udemy, very good for beginners.

I'd suggest just using Heroku to start out. While technically you want a dedi for Real People Erlang and Elixir (tm), most Phoenix apps if you aren't being too clever host on Heroku just fine.

Is anyone using Elixir for some MQTT related project? I've seen a couple of libraries to write clients, but none for writing the brokers, except for https://github.com/emqx/emqx but it's for Erlang. Which leads me to my second question, how easy it is to use Erlang libraries from Elixir, and if it's possible to keep writing idiomatic code, or if you have to bend it a bit if there isn't some wrapper or similar abstraction.

>>10395 I've used Erlang's built-in math library and ets (in memory database) library from Elixir and it was pretty straightforward to use. You just call it like :math.sin(3). All calls to Erlang functions start with a colon. Erlang and Elixir's string types have different formats (I think Erlang strings are implemented using lists so they're slow) so when an Erlang function returns a string you have to convert it to Elixir format. But numbers, lists and probably most other types should work without conversions. I haven't used external Erlang libraries so not sure how hard it is to import them.

I had a look around the website and the reddit so aside from web apps, are people doing anything interesting with this language?
