Educational podcasts and audio books
Demeere · 2018-03-22 21:00
I often have to drive for long periods of time, time which feels pretty wasted.
Anyone in similar situations?
Can you lainons recommend some /λ/ (programming and math) related podcasts and audio books?
Most podcasts seem more on the /tech/ and/or news side of things.
Apoc · 2018-03-22 22:33
there's a thread for podcasts in /music/. Go there and ask.

https://newrustacean.com/ mainly focuses on teaching/covering parts of the Rust language as well as libraries.

The Type Theory Podcast (http://typetheorypodcast.com/)
Even though it seems to be abandoned, the few episodes there are are very good.
It's very accessible as well, knowing a little bit of Coq or some other dependtly typed language is enough to understand most of what is being discussed.

>do youtube channels count as podcasts?
I don't think so because the purpose of podcasts is to do something mentally productive while eyes and hands are impaired i.e. driving or housework.

the phoenix project is an excellent audiobook and is a narrative centered around devops.

Podcasts:
Bacteriophiles - Microbiologist explains an interesting discovery in bacteriology every week.
Common Descent Podcast - Evolution/Paleontology. Very high quality stuff regarding dinosaurs, mass extinctions and the evolution of other vertebrates.
Skeptics Guide to the Universe - Kind of a wanky debate club of people very deep into the skepticism movement. Be warned, a couple of the hosts are very cringy with their personal politics. Otherwise, it's run by a brain surgeon who hates scam drugs, so it's entertaining from time to time. There is also a theoretical physicist who goes on the show every so often.
Hardcore History with Dan Carlin - On the fence with this one. It can be very compelling, but Dan isn't a historian and sometimes it shows.
Sawbones:
The cringy guy who helps run polygon and his doctor wife go over the history of a medical disorder, usually with emphasis on the quack remedies for it over the ages. Very gory. If you like nasty medical stuff and disease talk it's a good show. Polygon guy is insufferable, but his wife is very smart in comparison.
Sadly there aren't any good compsci related podcasts that I am aware of. I used to listen to Jono Bacon's Linux podcast, but the level of Ubuntu cheerleading, and laughable thinking was getting too damn high. Also one of his co-hosts is anti-vax.
Alternative Idea:
What I do when I'm in your situation is that I download webm's of the coursera courses I'm taking and listen to them on my commute.
If the content is mostly a lecture it works very well and 1000% deeper in subject material than what you'd get from most podcast type content.

The only programming related podcast I still listen to is embedded.fm. It's all about C and embedded stuff obviously.
I used to listen to Developer Tea until he started talking about web crap and answering the same "where to I start" type questions every single episode.
I tried cppcast but the guys who present it don't know soykaf and don't bother doing any researching at all before reading news or interviewing people it's embarrassing. They also have bullsoykaf ads every 5 minutes. Like if you're trying to make money at least put in some fuarrrking effort.

If you're into FLOSS and Linux in particular, there's The Lunduke Show (lunduke.com).
The host is an ex-journalist for the Linux Journal with many funny insights and funny anecdotes about technology having gone way overboard (There was a segment about his Linux ricecooker, IoT Shoes being bricked, etc.) Infrequent updates recently because he got a child

The Cognitect podcast (cognicast?) has a good variety of interviews if you are clojure inclined.

>host isn't that good
the guy that does the Functional Geekery podcast is the worst by far.

These aren't how to math or program, but are stories on programming history. Some of these books I know are on audio.
The friendly orange glow
Where wizards stay up late
Hackers: Heros of the computer revolution
Ghost in the wires
Cult of the dead cow
Masters of deception: the gang that ruled cyberspace.
Not audio books that I'm aware of but would like to note:
The daemon, the gnu, and the penguin
Installing linux on a dead Badger
The Tao of programming

It's totally not a technical podcast, but I rather enjoy "Philosophize This!".
