how do i continue

00000me · 2025-05-24 07:28
how does someone continue coding if they dont want anything? throughout the past year ive been reading a lot of philosophy but other than that theres nothing i continue to do. i feel that code can be such a beautiful thing and id like to learn a collection of languages, i just dont know how to get myself to continue doing it. this question of how do i continue isnt just related to coding so i dont think the question can be answered by you sharing resources, although that would be accepted as well.

>>42180 you should upper that semantic layer to be honest.

Zhora · 2025-05-24 08:08
>>42180 you don't. enjoying things bc you want to want to do them isn't a thing. you have to get at the deeper issue which is how to make an effort without it being a chore, how to be playful, how to get into a flow state etc..

>>42183 like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCQ2Yha9Gt8 you need to do more general work on yourself and learn, not just a one-liner / slogan and then yet more compsci.

>>42182 just lol, we are in the era of agi magic, wtf are you talking about

>>42180 >i feel that code can be such a beautiful thing What do you enjoy about programming? Why do you think it can be a beautiful thing? >id like to learn a collection of languages Why? What part of the languages you know currently is lacking? >>42183 is on to something; simply liking the idea of being a programmer without actually enjoying the process will lead to burnout. Then again, lacking motivation is a common symptom of depression, but your post is so vague that it's impossible to tell. If you'd like a serious discussion please put a bit more effort and thought into your posts, thanks.

>>42180 I have been struggling with similar issue as well. I lost almost all of my motivation for programming. I'm not fully sure why. I feel that problem solving in code is too difficult and that I don't even have many computer/programming problems that need solving. I decided that I won't pursue career in programming or IT. I'm not sure what I should do with my life. For the last 1.5-2 year(s), I have been reading about philosophy and various religions. But maybe I will start learning chemistry or biology and I will see if it would be better choice for me.

>>42180 a lot of philosophy is just math and a lot of coding is just math so it's basically the same thing

>>42180 >if they dont want anything I'd fix that first. For me, my main motivation is to get Genetic Programming to a usable state. GP is one of the things that has actual potential to be "AGI", unlike the billion-dollar stochastic parrots which are popular today. Investigating GP has directly motivated me to learn more about various languages. Currently I'm investigating combinators, in particular any based on SKI, which not only avoid the need for variables but also have the fascinating property of being pure code, i.e. there is no "data".

>>42195 My nigga genetic programming is just an optimization method the same as artificial neurons.

>>42187 cant reply much or to others rn but my main problem seems to be consuming the knowledge. i try very hard doing coding practices from the information ive been given and reading docs myself to try other things but it seems to not even go in one ear and out the other, its rejected from my brain entirely. during k-12 i had tried numerous schools with all different types of "learning-styles" but it seems my brain only worked k-?, not really sure where but at some point i think something happened that killed it.

I feel like I’m struggling with a similiar feeling. In the past, I enjoyed doing a lot of things alongside programming, today I’m not sure if something changed, or I was just being naive in the past. It might be that what I had back then is a stronger sense of intrinsic motivation, some meaning even in my pursuits, today it’s like everything I touch is a futile attempt to fill the void just a bit, and my mind is quick to jump to conclusion that it’s all for nothing. I don’t have a thing that I like to do for the sake of it other than maybe reading and playing games. Nothing stays the same though, and I hope it will all start making sense for me somehow one day, or that I find something irl that I can stand grinding and be satisfied with the effort.

>>42180 Make things. I always recommend starting with an MS Paint clone. If you feel like you're going nowhere, there's a very good chance that what you're doing isn't in service of anything. >>42186 >AGI Doesn't exist yet and cannot with existing models unless you define that word in a way contrary to its traditional meaning.

>>42193 Friend, you need to do something for fun with the computer, like write some program, yes bad and stupid program that barely works but write it. You can make your own music player that only uses system sound, thats cool, doesnt matter that it uses not correct algorithms or you are making bad decesions you are doing it for Fun! Sounds like you got into peogramming not because you wanted to program but for something else ? Or maybe school sucked all the motivation from you it happens. So try just making something for Fun, just because, not to learn anything or get a job, but just for the sake of It! That is the magic of programming, it is the only field that allows you to make anything just for Fun, can a mechanic make a car just for Fun? Maybe but he would probably never do it. Can a doctor make a human, of course not! But you can make an Os, a compiler, a game, a server, and see it working, running on a computer, it is Great!

I enjoy writing code. But I have no ideas for fun or interesting projects. So I've been doing nothing for a while now, which feels terrible.
