how do i learn about stuff like video codecs, image/video formats etc? when people talk about this stuff i feel deeply ignorant and i think its stuff a programmer should know about. any books or resources you would recommend?

>1. Choose a format you want to know about >2. Read its spec >3. It's really that easy Pretty sure this exact question was already asked a while ago

>>40678 im looking for something more accessible and practical than the spec.
JARGON · 2024-12-14 13:28
>>40679 Do you care about specific file formats, or the theory that surrounds them? File format specifications are the most practical sources for how they work, as they are directly designed for implementation usually. All of this is not to even mention that more video theory is unrelated to image file formats, and conflating the two for anything beyond simple formats is a mistake in general.

>>40682 im starting from 0 here, i dont care about anything specific because i literally dont know anything, if that makes sense

>how do i learn about stuff like video codecs, image/video formats etc? Start by not killing informative threads by pushing them off the catalog when making unnecessary threads like this one. Threads for questions like this already exist >>40486 and are under utilized.
Drano · 2024-12-16 08:30
>>40687 that thread has nothing to do with mine, since it's a programming beginner thread not only my thread is not related in any way to being a noob programmer, it's not about programming at all

Read the Handbook of Data Compression in its entirety. Barely related, but https://cloudinary.com/blog/jpeg-xls-modular-mode-explained is a pretty nice article. t. someone who knows his soykaf

>>40711 If it's not related to programming, why the hell are you here? The board is literally about programming.
