I'm planning to use a raspberry pi 3 as a mini home server.
My main use cases are:
-IRC bouncer
-IRC server
-email client
-Web server serving very simple small sites for a maximum of 20 clients
-SQL database server serving a few queries a minute for a maximum of 20 clients
and similar things.
What should i install.
Raspberry OS became too bloated for rpi3, also i would like it to avoid systemd-related security holes. I like Artix but i'm not sure if it would overheat it...
I don't plan to use anything graphical, only cli, ncurses, etc
What do you advise me to install? I would happily accept advice for other softwares, not only the OS. Also kernel options and configs in general would be great. Thank you.

you're not doing all that on a microSD card, right?

I can use a usb to SATA ssd if it's a must, if not i planned to switch off swap to keep the sd card live long. Is an ssd a must? i would have liked to keep it low consuming to be able.to run from a tiny UPS.

You may need another power source for a SATA disk. Pi can't provide too much power to other devices without glitching. SSD will use less power, but isn't mandatory.
There are filesystems optimized for flash memory too, like Flash Friendly Filesystem. Then there are in-memory options if you anticipate heavy FS use, like tmpfs, but the Pi is already pretty short on memory. And without persistence, tmpfs contents will be gone after each reboot. That's a security issue with existing heavy-use filesystems, like the one housing /var.
I'd go with a SATA disk plus external power supply.
OpenBSD should run on it. Just wouldn't be as fast.

I advise you to install arch btw

First of all i made another mistake, i wanted to write email server, not client.

Thanks for the advice, of course i would use external SATA power source, especially because the current needed for it would require two USBs (0.5A max each), which would limit the number of my already few USBs.
Never heard about Flash Friendly filesystem, i'm gonna look into it tonight. tmpfs is perfect for mounting /tmp into it, i wouldn't use it for anything else i know of.
OpenBSD sounds great, i tried it a few times in a VM, it looked very straightforward, friendly, unbloated, but i would need a few months to learn it to the level i know linux (which i will happily do if it seems the best option)

I'm not a big fan of arch. I like arch-like systems, like i mentioned artix, but IMO arch went in a not nice way the last few years. You probably know about the problems with it most people mention so won't do it here unless you ask me to.

I believe openbsd works on arm. if anything its super easy to get older versions of it too// what bouncer are you going to use? sujo or soju or however its called? i need to get a bouncer up again
