Lainchan's Board Software
paradox · 2017-04-18 20:31
Hey Lainons, me again.
https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan
You can imagine my reaction when I pop in yesterday for my monthly visit to check up on the thread, and it's not here.
But, after talking with a bunch of people WAY more important to this site than me I learned three things
1. Some bad stuff went down since the last time I logged on
2. The site is going to be alright
3. We still need patches
So, if you have the time, knowledge, or persistence, please, lainchan wants YOU to help improve the board
Some of our best programmers & technical guru (read, some guy with a hacksaw) are currently busy maintaining the site after recent events. This is a perfect time to file bug reports, work on patches, hell even commenting sections of the code with little documentation would be a HUGE help at a time like this
Love you lains

Oh, as a sidenote, and maybe this needs another thread, but it'd be great if some lain could link resources to php tutorials and frameworks. I think it's a good idea to help willing contributors who might not know how to code in php to resources so they can learn
If nothing else php is where the money is in terms of freelancing, gotta get them nuyen know what I mean?

Quick update before I go to bed, I've got an Ubuntu MATE setup running as a work environment and I've got the site's backend installed and hosted, so I'm going to be writing a patch after a few hours sleep.
I'm unsure on what to patch exactly but even if I'm just writing comments while exploring functions.php I'll be learning more about how it works
G'Night lains!

Good to see more people working on it, I've recently started myself. I will be looking into better mobile support, which is gonna be huge

I agree, though this thread was here before the wipe. I could have restored it from the September backup, but most of what was discussed has been fixed, or wasn't relevant in the first place. Figured it was better to start fresh.
My issue's been I'm never here. I'll use the site for a few days a month, try to contribute, feel like I can't really help, and wander off. As a result, I resigned myself a while back to just sort of side others in the right direction via threads like this. Enough of that, time to lead by example.

Well Ubuntu had to be thrown out the damn window, I think it's something with my hardware configuration, something with a
>Cannot enumerate USB device error
That causes my keyboard to crash I've been getting on some other devices, I think it's something with how I'm setting up the external HDD
In any case, Fedora Workstation 25, fitting, as the last time I wrote a patch I was on 24, kinda feels like home in a weird way
I've been exploring the code base some more, and going over some pdfs Appleman handed off to me, along with http://www.phptherightway.com/ which has been pretty informative thus far, my system should be done updating by morning and once that's done I can install LAMP & some editors, probably Atom & EMACS, as much as I like the thermonuclear text editor it's a pain to get it setup right
Note to Fruitguy, if you could upload those pdfs here that'd be great, I saved them to a flashdrive... then overwrote them without thinking about it when I was installing this thing
also, if anyone can figure out why fedora's taking so long to patch, it downloaded the 750 or so mb of packages really fast, it's the INSTALL that's taking a long time, pic related is after about two hours

Think I've got it figured out, my flashdrive might be garbage. Opening my home/pictures directory took about 35 seconds with nautilus hanging for most of that time, likely because dnf is hogging most of the drive's read/write access, The speeds on USB 2.0 should be more than enough, true, but with the interface being constantly spammed with small operations, read, extract, write, over & over, hm
Well I'll see how well it runs after the updates apply
Night lains!

Can confirm, flashdrive is garbage, installed to internal ssd, so much better, wow.
Also, note to administration, that error I reported yesterday, not being able to connect over http, I had it again this morning, so I connected via https, and it worked as usual, then tried standard http and got redirected
however it's not redirecting if I haven't connected via https before

Dunno if this was proposed before due to the wipe.
I can contribute maintaining a Vagrant box or a Docker container for aiding the development. That way all the coders can share the same environment and that soykaf. And stuff like >>542 don't stop the development process (which is not a big problem since this is more of a hobby project, but you get the idea).

Please do that, contributing would be much easier then!

Would like that as well, with live git pushes or something (only give access to select people)
call it lainchan.jp or something Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

If it's the vagrant file from that github branch, good stuff man.
I'm hoping if we make enough usability improvements it triggers a snowball effect that gets us more contributors, hopefully resulting in more features and better performance for the site
anyway, Happy Birthday Lainchan!

I honestly never thought I'd see this error message, I must not have specified -R when I chmod-ed the directory
