hey lainons im struggling to find info on how to code a forum/imageboard similar to lainchan and/or early 4chan. any tips for where to start? My only experience with code is python, html, css and a bit of javascript(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

Install a web-server and write a simple cgi app first. An imageboard isnt very complicated either, but you'll likely want to use a dbms, so learn a bit of sql.
That should be all the keywords you need.

An imageboard is dead easy.
I made a textboard as my first project in PHP. I didn't look up info on how to make one, I just did it. I know it's not an imageboard, but most of the skeleton is in that, it isn't much further to get an imageboard, besides maybe handling thumbnails.

I'm not sure how strong your experience with those langs are lainon, but it sounds to me like you got everything you need to get started. I'm going to talk like you have little, to no experience, for the sake of sharing info.
Most webapps operate almost the same way, they all have a Frontend (client side) and a Backend (server side). Learn the architecture, pick up a stack, and go to town.
Since you say you have Python in your toolbelt, you could use the Django Web Framework as the backend for your web server logic and use templates to serve your users HTML/CSS (with little to no Client-Side JavaScript needed). But now you need a way to store your users' posts. If you are willing to learn SQL (which I personally believe is essential to know in this day and age) you could use MariaDB or Postgresql. If you don't want to use SQL, then you could use MongoDB. Then set it up to have your Database Server communicate with your Web Server. Web Design isn't my forte, but a quick and easy hack I like to use is Flexbox in CSS. Learn Flexbox or have a cheat sheet out like I do, and you'll be moving stuff around and making good looking web apps with ease.
Some personal notes:
* Again, assuming you are new, you could find Web Development tutorials pretty easily as it's the barrier to entry in the coding/programming world.
- Try looking through YouTube for starters, like "How to get started with Python Django". Most things by the youtube channel "freeCodeCamp" is usually pretty good and informative
- W3Schools
* You should try your best to get a reasonably good understanding of those langs you listed earlier (especially Python) first before trying to make something that others are going to use as there could be security issues for yourself and your userbase.
* DO NOT FALL FOR THE SINGLE PAGE APPLICATION MEME SUCH AS REACT.JS. And I say this as someone who has been coding up React apps for the longest time now. React has a lot of plug and play sure, but the trade off is having your users needing to run a ton of JavaScript in the web browser just to load up HTML. Next.js is more reasonable (if you want to call it that) but even then, it is wayyyy too bloated for an app such as an imageboard. Sure there are Server Components which speed things up but at the end of the day, your users are going to want to interact with the app and you will need to provide Client Side components. I would be lying if I said I never thought about doing this, but I never pursued it as it's just overall a really soykafty idea.
* If you're still learning Web Dev, then stay FAR AWAY from Web Dev General threads on /g/. There is a bunch of contradicting info that can possibly be overwhelming, there are users who give objectively bad or wrong info to intentionally or unintentionally throw you off, and overall it's just really soykafty. Stay away from there until you get a good understanding on how Web Dev works.
Good luck Lainon and I hope you make the best imageboard out there :)

Interestingly, I was thinking about doing the same lately. Just got into imageboards a month ago, got amazed by them and started out to make my own. Currently have a tiny prototype. I can tell you it's fun, but also a lot of work if you're new to webdev, like me. ;)

Learn SQL and sqlite. Take a look at the nanochan/picochan code: https://github.com/neeshy/picochan
Another Tip: avoid copying vichan code because it's not that good...
You can replace sqlite with MariaDB or Postgres later. I highly recommend against using MongoDB or noSQL, unless you absolutely know what you are doing.
