isnt it weird how every plan9 desktop screenshot atleast has a useless image, catclock or a webpage in the corner of their screen, doing nothing while they have probably 2 terminal windows and an acme window? i keep seeing this, whats the difference between 9front and plan9 though?

>isnt it weird how every plan9 desktop screenshot atleast has a useless image, catclock or a webpage in the corner of their screen, doing nothing while they have probably 2 terminal windows and an acme window? this is an operating system from the 90s that only nerds care about. displaying full color images is the pinnacle of its graphics capabilities, and naturally people taking screenshots will want to show it off. people have used it for serious work but if you're asking these questions in the first place that will most likely not be you. >i keep seeing this, whats the difference between 9front and plan9 though? plan 9 from bell labs is an operating system whose latest version was released 24 years ago. 9front is a plan9 fork that is actively worked on to this day, and has a fairly large community around it (perhaps the largest of all the plan9 forks).

Lain... almost all of this soykaf is obvious LARP. No, people don't actually like to daily drive ancient UIs. What a surprise. If you like minimal look, it would make much more sense to rice something modern to look like that and still retain all the functionality and compatibility of modern tech.

>larp it's just arranging things so they look pretty for the screenshot. you're not even autistic, you're just pretending to be retarded for attention do you think that taking a shower is larping because humans naturally smell like sweat?

>>94073 >daily drive >rice yeah you've never actually done anything with a computer that isn't running other people's programs on it, certainly not having to think about how information flows through the system or how to network it. I'm afraid plan9 has nothing to offer you.

>>94074 >>94075 Well, I refuse to believe people actually abandon Linux distros and go use stuff like Kolibri or Plan9 for real. There is very little point in doing so because you can achieve all the same goals on Linux if you actually know what you're doing and it will be much better with much more software available to you, with much more up to date drivers, security patches, etc. The most exotic thing that makes sense to use is BSD, anything more exotic is just pointless.

> The most exotic thing that makes sense to use is BSD, anything more exotic is just pointless. The exception is: if someone dev-ing the system itself and is mad enough to believe they can make it actually useable at least at the level of BSD some day, then that's great. Or there might be niche OS for very very niche things, it wouldn't however make sense to showcase their casual use for random everyday mundane things like stuff on the screenshot.

>>94076 I think its fair to point out that some people use computers very differently. Some people really only need a webbrowser. Some people want an SSH terminal. Some people need MS word, some people have a hard line that it has to run steam. Some people need to be able to run some convoluted cad software or whatever. If you only need a fairly narrow niche of things, and are a certain type of person, a very limiting system can be in its way very comfortable, sometimes less distracting. I typically work on a computer where audio doesn't work. I could fix it probably in ten minutes tops. But I don't really want to, I wouldn't use it for anything productive anyway.
Sabo Engle · 2026-08-30 22:16
>>94079 and I don't mean to imply that not using audio is equivalent to daily driving plan9, but I think there's a degree where the principal is similar.
