RNS

Mark Qvist · 2026-08-11 14:06
Reticulum Network Stack Reticulum is a full-blown network stack that aims to replace TCP/IP in some scenarios. The main characteristic of RNS is transport agnosticism: it will work over TCP/IP, packet radio, LoRa, WiFi Halow, printed QR codes, etc. You could spin this grassroots mesh network up everywhere for a dozen of scenarios. I suggest you give this article a read: https://reticulum.network/manual/zen.html

RNS is an absolute gemerald and deserves more recognition. It is really powerful and also really simple to use. And also -- today i flashed my first RNode! haven't got time to put it to real use though...

>>93732 Have you printed this case yourself?
Agent Jones · 2026-08-12 04:27
https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-reticulum-unstoppable-networks-for-the-people The talk explains why was the stack invented in the first place in simple terms unlike the Zen article. I know for sure that you love such wording but video is simpler to digest.

how much work does the firmware do? is it just a thin layer to communicate with the LoRA chip, or does it do heavy lifting?
John Rain · 2026-08-12 15:07
>>93752 All heavy lifting is offloaded to host machine as far as i understand
Motoko Kusanagi · 2026-08-12 23:23
>>93752 Reference RNode_Firmware only does the comms. There also is microReticulum_Firmware which does implement the full stack without requiring a big powerful device.

Has anyone tried RNS over HF? I'm interested in making a DIY QRP transceiver just for the RNS but I know no more than a Baofeng UV-5R.
Splicer · 2026-08-14 22:40
>>93729 Anyone know much about reverse engineering efforts on LoRa? I'm no good with radio so wouldn't be able to do it, but I've seen the chirps on the spectrogram, and I don't know why can't people figure it out? Are they using magic to prevent us from knowing?
Batou · 2026-08-15 02:35
>>93831 The way LoRa works is pretty well documented : https://github.com/tapparelj/gr-lora_sdr https://lora.readthedocs.io/en/latest/>>93831

Have anyone actually tried modem73.app? Looks like an easy way to communicate over the horizon using HF propagation.
Donna Hawthorne · 2026-09-10 23:55
>>94196 Not so easy as you imagine. You have to have not just a sound card with input and output but also a programmatic PTT key. VOX is trash at least with Baofeng UV-5R. K1 supports PTT though but you either DIY the soykaf out of what is available to you or get an expensive USB dongle that is only that expensive because of scarcity or low production scale. I do not have enough experience to solder the rig myself. I do not have enough money to spare to get a plug&play rig. What are my other options?

>>94227 I've done Computer - UV5R interface with PTT. I've bought some cheap usb audio card, dumped plastics and sockets, soldered wires to card pads, and attached PTT wire to some GPIO. For GPIO, you can use something with GPIO (like some SBC), or, there are some audio cards with GPIO pins (check CM108). Also, for better sound, it required one ceramic capacitor. Some people suggested to drive PTT using transistor gated by GPIO, instead of bare GPIO. Soldering was easy, in fact, it was the first thing I soldered. Later I've also made version for Vertex/Yaesu VX-2000, all of that was used for AX.25 stuff. Remember one thing, VOX activation in thing like that is absolute soykaf
