lainanons' opinion on x11 and wayland?

lainanons, what are your opinions on x11 vs wayland for daily driving? is x11 going to be outdated tech soon or is wayland just reinventing the wheel?

from what I've used and seen, wayland is full of very annoying, borderline unbearable people, so I won't be using it any time soon. niri was nice to play around tho

"hey anons please start a flame war in the replies" To me, having a meaningful choice of display server is more important than the (mostly overblown and meaningless) benefits of choosing one over the other. I want the current situation to continue forever. I want 3, 4, 10 competing fuarrrking display servers. Billions must CHOOSE.

>>93733 strewth. I like how Wayland is kind of intended to encourage multiple implementations of the core protocol with different features. X technically could be this way but hasn't been for a very long time. Long story short unless you have a very particular set of requirements, there isn't really a reason to pick one over the other in $CURRENT_YEAR. There are reasons to pick particular desktop environments. I avoided GNOME back when it was X11-based and I avoid it now.

I soykaf on wayland for a long time, and then I tried it again recently, and all the annoying little issues I had before were gone. I don't want to like it... but it seems to get rid of so many tiny little issues I had with x11 that most people wouldn't have noticed. One issue, though. Screensavers. There seems no simple way of getting one working for my CRT on wayland.

>>93719 I mean I use X11 because I like dwm+dmenu and my wife is using Wayland because she likes KDE Plasma. They are fine for their use cases. And, by the by, xlibre is doing just fine. Question: What is the point of this thread?
Masami Eiri · 2026-08-12 15:30
we don't need 2 useless 'debate' threads that are not going to go anywhere on the same topic
Joey · 2026-08-12 22:02
we dont need another thread on this. the entire topic is a waste of time and anyone who actually uses linux instead of just talks about it would know that

Next big KDE version releasing in fall (iirc), will have x11 fully completely utterly deprecated and unsupported. My only personal interest in x11 is running old proprietary windows software under wine, maybe I'll install xfce as a sidekick for those rare usecases.
