how do you name your directories?

in my home directory, i have directories called music, pics, video, which contain what you'd expect. then i have docs, which originally contained personal documents (bank statements, agreements/contracts, schoolwork etc) but in the last couple of years i started adding non-personal stuff to docs, things like books, textbooks and webpages that i saved, manuals for stuff i bought and so on. now its a gross 50/50 mix of personal and non-personal stuff so im thinking of separating it into two directories. question is what to call them? im not sure how to name the two directories in a way where each is clearly named, the names are not easily mixed up and the names are both short (<=6 chars) for example: >mydocs, urdocs >docs, other >mine, saved all seem like crappy solutions. any suggestions?

bin/ # not in $PATH, nor executables, I just alias "interpreter $HOME/bin/whatever" dev/ # development stuff, one folder per project, plus generic dev/ideas/ media/ # I lump all XDG dirs under here media/bkp/ media/down/ #loads media/img/ # pics media/isos/ # the other type of images media/xdg/ # everything else I don't care, like Desktop, that XDG insists I have a folder opt/ # locally installed stuff tmp/ # temporary stuff I don't want in /tmp because I want manual control over deletion I try to keep my $HOME clean, at least non-hidden soykaf, and move autocreated folders into subfolders.

>>93493 neato. i still have the default layout with .local so i put a lot of stuff in there that I don't normally want to see (bin/opt/xdg etc.) >media/xyz maybe thats the best solution, i could have (my)docs and media/docs, although i enjoy having my directories directly in home as long as they are cleanly separated

>>93483 I just have a big folder named "alexandria" for non personal stuff, named after the alexandria library since that is also where i have a folder of .zim files and enseclopedias

>>93493 >media/xdg/ # everything else I don't care, like Desktop, that XDG insists I have a folder You don't need to have the desktop folder, you can just leave XDG_DESKTOP_DIR blank in user-dirs.dirs

>>93483 files and folders are a big scam created by unimaginative types who couldn't look past paper files and folders and just recreated them

>>93972 Yeah, I could do that, thanks. But I think if some program tries to save something to one of these folders without consulting me, I feel I have more control having it go there. I have several dirs I don't use besides Desktop all pointing to media/xdg, if any file ever pops up there, I know which program isn't playing nice. But maybe it's just placebo and a feeling of being in control but not really, idk.
