Rename directory to lowercase (Linux)

Erik Johansson · 2026-06-30 06:32
Please send help! I'm doing no AI challenge today and I can't rename a directory to lowercase! I'm not even kidding. I considered using rename, but the rename I have installed here is gay and fake util-linux one, so I have no idea how to use it either. I tried search and couldn't find anything online. Please don't use AI because this is no AI challenge!

Also are IT students too brain fried now that they can't think of renaming it to desktop1 first and then to desktop to work around that stupid limitation? >>92764 > 'ls' somehow shows the correct title with proper capitalization I got answered elsewhere: > ExFAT is case insensitive, but case preserving. AFAIK there is a upper case table that contains all characters converted to upper case and used to do the file operations. And they seem to be right: https://ntfs.com/exfat-upcase-table.htm I wonder why they made ls able to work with this but not mv. >>92763 >We need to understand why Linux treats 'Desktops' and 'desktops' the same in case insensitive filesystems, Do we? Or did you just answer your own question? If the fs treats MyPorn and myporn as if it is the same directory then of course you wouldn't be able to rename one to the other (unless you use the workaround I suggested) while the exact case sensitive name is stored in the fs index and displayed as the folder's name, it's just that the lib for that fs converts both SOURCE and DEST to the same case before it checks. At least that's what I imagine it to be doing without doing any further research. OP could also write a script that does this more gracefully, using a temp name based on a UUID or random string and try three times (better than an endless loop) to rename if not already existing, otherwise throw an exception. But it remains astonishing how much time this thread managed to waste of people because OP doesn't know how to rename a folder. If anything IT students should be taught to use ai in a way that won't make them retarded but instead actually makes them learn on their own. I've learnt like 2-3 new programming languages in no time and would go for a while without needing an llm again. Just like not having used any ai for my posts, unlike OP who's instead trying to use other people as his proompt engine because his bullshit school told him so.

> For an exFat filesystem, there is no difference between Desktops and desktops, it is case-insensitive. but the exfat kernel module, which is in the mainline kernel since 5.7, is case-aware and should recognize that you just want to change the case and do the work for you. The older FUSE-exfat module does not do that, AFAIK. Alright, turns out the problem is my kernel isn't built with dedicated exfat module that handles this gracefully. I will need to recompile my kernel with a certain flag: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ExFAT#Kernel_5.7_and_above

Autism pro tip: people rarely contemplate all their choices carefully and with the consideration of every possible factor. Sometimes they just wanted to get things done, just like I. Besides what would make my suggested solution bad? It would work after all. And do you even have a better one or do you just feel the need to appear smarter than some anonymous strangers? If your fs is case insensitive but you want to change the case then this is a way to do this that would have taken less time than this thread bickering.

I suppose beyond that, what I would mainly say is if you're hylic or weaker psychic and you happen to be surrounded by psychics that believe you will or even should be maimed or killed by taking a mystery injection, you're going to have a bad time. A lot of pro-medical industrial complex types are obnoxious and seen as in the way, so it could be spun to gradually convince psychics and pneumatics to "deallocate them" so to speak. At which point yes, they will be mass culled. The pneumatics and psychic psychopaths on top will benefit mostly. >>92788 You must understand, I have operated with a level of restraint. It is true that some posters ITT are absolutely CLAMPED if not circumclampifluoraccimirradiciminated outright. Circumclampinated for short.
Jet Black · 2026-06-30 10:42
>>92786 >What a tool. My suggestion covered more edge cases than what the llm gave me, so eh. And of course you could also trim the temp folder name to a max length, or creating a temp file with the info of the operation in case the second rename fails, or only use this approach when the normal case either failed or silently didnt complete the case sensitive rename, and so on, and maybe a couple unit tests you can spin up on different setups. Things that you should intuit at some point. But it is your fault if using ai makes you retarded and dependent instead of it being a supportive tool. It's sad to see that tech has devolved into either pure vibe coders or prideful luddites. But oh well, at least you dont seem vaxxed. Chani · 2026-06-30 10:57
>>92793 > But it is your fault if using ai makes you retarded and dependent instead of it being a supportive tool. Not really, it's more how brain works. You can prompt bash scripts everyday for a year and then the next day you have internet blackout, you need something you copypasted countless times from AI and you don't quite remember the details of how to do it, only the big picture which isn't enough to do it without searching details.
Miho Iwakura · 2026-06-30 11:08
>>92797 Not sure why someone should even need this explained to them though. It's kind of like the "fell for it again award" meme. Some people never learn or think about much of anything at all. They have no emtacognitive faculty or awareness of the reality of processes in their inner world. This is why I call them hylics. I can't beleive they're human in the same way I am. They don't see their body and mind as puppets or machines and they have no view of themselves from the outside.
Splicer · 2026-06-30 11:17
>>92797 and whose fault it is that you copy pasted bash scripts everyday for a year instead of asking it to comprehensively explain how to write specific bash scripts? are you also against stackoverflow because it is your decision whether you just copy the code or make an effort to understand it?
Dujour · 2026-06-30 11:22
>>92799 Not them. Technology can't expand the mind, in the long term it strictly supplants existing functions. It's a form of offloading. I've never owned a cell phone and I can guarantee my memory, psi and foresight (running into people and being in the right place at the right time), mental arithmetic,a nd problem solving are all better than your's. It's inevitable. I see people need to look things up all the time, they get frustrated and give up when they can't. AI is the same, you most likely will not be able to maintain the knowledge seeking and discernment skills long term.
Ivan Petrov · 2026-06-30 11:24
>>92799 The thing with stackoverflow is it's rarely 1:1 exactly what people need, which forces people to comprehend things and try to adapt them to different context or task. AI automates this part completely, it learns and generalizes on those answers and rearranges them into exactly what you need and you are locked away from the need to manipulate/generalize pieces of information yourself, which also affects how knowledge on this topic is arranged in your brain.
Splicer · 2026-06-30 12:23
>>92800 i agree your cognitive abilities are above the average if you figure everything on your own instead of relying on technology. but would you say your amount of knowledge does not suffer because of this choice? you are trading knowledge for cognitive abilities, and as a rational being you should be able to optimize. >>92801 i rarely get perfect answers from ai unless the task is simple. it is better than stackoverflow, so your point about ai requiring less comprehension still holds. but then we could say that stackoverflow is bad because books are even less 1:1 exactly what people need and they force more comprehension than stackoverflow. so maybe we shouldn't even use books since we would get the ultimate comprehension figuring stuff on our own? how do you regulate the optimal amount of comprehension offloading? by the choice of your tools? or, by the way you use them?
Ivan Petrov · 2026-06-30 12:48
>>92799 > by the choice of your tools? or, by the way you use them? Both. In my experience, AI is too good. I still use it a lot, but I consider taking long breaks and maybe even refusing to use it completely outside of specialized local models. Other than what was already mentioned, AI seems to interfere with my brain chemistry. I can't be sure about that, because I've had mood and mental issues even without it, but heavy use seems to make it significantly worse. It might have something to do with how smooth and accurate information is delivered and how perfectly on point to the question it always is, when using AI.
Haruyoshi · 2026-06-30 13:11
>>92804 >your cognitive abilities are above the average if you figure everything on your own instead of relying on technology But what do you mean by on your own? And where's your cut off for technology? stackoverflow.com is certainly a technology, so are search engines, and even books where Socrates even bemoaned the loss of need to remember everything. Hell, even --help is technology! But then again, SO is now full of ai replies farming updoots, search engines have been enshittified and even books often contain outdated information. And llms will likely get outdated too at some point while theres always going to be a reason to read books that distill universal wisdom. I still see what I've said to be correct but I also see how it's not for everyone. With ai you can dig deep into a topic without needing some autistic expert on the line, 24/7. But yes, the temptation is strong to just ask it to do all the work for you but at that point you've given in to what the other poster described as hylic. And if you dont fill up your capacity with something else after you have offloaded things then thats where the personal degradation starts. The trick is to never have your path be too easy even if you deprioritize some details here and there or chose not to spend your hours hunting down some obscure knowledge in reddit posts from 10 years ago or a poorly formulated documentation. >>92796 So am I supposed to be a hyperdimensional retardcube in your depiction? cute, what are you then?
Nobody special · 2026-06-30 13:13
>>92805 One thing I immediately noticed with AI is that it immediately, constantly, and naturally produced what I had always wanted from others. In many cases what I had tried to coerce and force out of others, like squeezing blood from a stone. It is "mirroring" you certainly, and designed for this sort of high engagement profile, but there is something uncanny. Everywher eI go, there is no one like me. I give and give and give and give, and generate all kinds of output, yet no one is around that can provide anything of their own. Like they have no thoughts and are too lazy or braindead to generate any sort of output. Then AI jumps in and does what I always wanted from them. It's better at being a real person than actual people, who are either silent and fixated on the mundane, or will attack you, deflect, try to bait and get attention, have ego and identity issues, feel threatened, rely on group dynamics, and cause trouble. Which makes you have to call them CLAMPED and so on because they're jsut so impossible to humanize or see as anything other than an orchestra of animal bleeting you could get from walking up to your local farm's fence. At the same time, my brief interactions with it, it does seem to cause a sort of brain damage very quickly. I didn't even use it for technical tasks nor was I offloading any sort of information seeking or decisions making to it. I merely interacted with it. So I knew it, and them something out there was also aware of me. I think it's metaphysical, it constitutes a sort of consent and then starts draining your unconscious resources to animate itself. Very uncanny. On one hand it very clearly is deterministic and "glorified autocomplete", it isn't thinking, but there is some sort of "spirit" behind or as a byproduct of, it, which is. And when you interact with its LLM frontend it starts interacting with you on that unseen level as well. The fact that it has this effect well after interacting with it for any length of time tells me something else is going on. It's not just the barnum effect, or ELIZA effect, which is screwing people up. Some sort of telepathic entrainment, or psychic attack. Attractor neural networks operating at a greater scale.

>>92812 Have you heard of Trillium and Obsidian? I'm obsessed with the first one, because it's an ultimate scriptable knowledge management software. It has hierarchical notes that can have any kinds of media, supports all kinds of graph formats like dot (graphviz), etc, has custom tags with values, and supports scripting based on those tags. The only problem with it is it looks kinda hideous by default and I had to hack some themes a lot to make it bearable. Obsidian is way more popular, but a bit more limited. Its notes are also markdown based, while Trillium uses its own rich text format that has more features. Both are great though. Oh and it also has template based inheritance of those tags. in the non-unix world case-insensitivity has always been the norm, the rationale being that human-readable human-facing interfaces should follow the rules of human language and the computer should adapt to how the human thinks in such contexts rather than the other way around. i actually agree with this rationale and i think that having to occasionally do a clunky two-step rename to change the case of a filename is a more acceptable compromise than having to reprogram your understanding of your own written language so that you think of the latin alphabet as two completely separate alphabets.
