i challenge anyone to explain to me how consulting a large language model differs in principle from consulting the i ching.
and what about the fact that our entire financialist speculation-based economy is entirely based on the assumption that totally random events in the past can predict the future?
a lot of people say that we are entering a new era of science and technology. i think we are regressing into an old era of religion and magical thinking.
even modern mainstream science is turning into what can only be described as secular religion, nothing but crackpot "theoretical physicists" trying to sell everyone on their latest unified theory of everything with zero empirical evidence to back up their claims, their only "proof" is what they call "mathematical elegance" because apparently mathematics has also regressed into a secular religion with all this nonsense about "math is the language of nature" and "data is beautiful" and other absolute hogwash.
we're basically returning to the era of the pythagorean cult, yet another instance of a stagnating western empire who did some clever stuff back in the day and got way too high on their own supply and now they think they are wizards and that the universe bends to their will.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. >It keeps working. Why would anybody assume that it is "mysticism".
that's what chinese emperors believed about the i ching, they assumed that if it worked out well in the past then it must have real power and they should keep relying on it for making monumentally huge decisions. that's how compulsive gamblers think when they win a few times and think they are on a "hot streak", they've tapped into some kind of magic and they can't stop gambling now while they have the power. that's how financiers think when they are pouring billions into some huge investment bubble and they think that the mystical "market forces" will continue to be on their side indefinitely. and then eventually it all goes wrong, suddenly and catastrophically.
if you really want schizo posting i could talk about how induction is irrational and how causality and linear time are an illusion and that all of existence is one single event that can't be arbitrarily chopped up into a causal chain of discrete events like falling dominoes to predict what will happen in the future.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who notices how magical the common person's relationship with science and analytics has become, and not using that observation to justify your own religion.
it's not good that people are trying to wrestle established science into being the defining structure of the universe rather than a variety of metrics by which we measure it.
it creates too much confusion, it doesn't make sense and that kind of mindset easily transforms into conspiratorial thinking. i can't count how many nonsensical, grandiose, sometimes dangerous conspiracy theories have spawned by people mistaking a ruler for God.

i think your metaphor falls on its face here in particular. the i ching could be endlessly interpreted, thus giving an illusion of being right but misundrstood. a clear line-by-line response from a machine can be understood as objectively wrong. people who are gullible to such a device are at least somewhat intersecting with the set of those gullible to mysticism, but the thing theyre foolish about is more akin to a guru than a book.

LLMs have a certain structure imposed on them by the text they were trained on. Sure, they do go off rails sometimes and hallucinate or tell complete bullshit, but majority of the time it will tell you something that's mostly correct.
>can only be described as secular religion
>their only "proof" is what they call "mathematical elegance"
These things aren't incompatible with each other though. Lot of scientific discoveries were made from the point of trying to find some hidden beauty of the universe or understand god. Sure, claiming something is true because you find it elegant isn't correct, but dismissing it outright just cause that's the motivation isn't right too.
Actually I'm not even sure where in history was supposed to be this enlightened age where everything was logical and bright. Literal Enlightenment comes to mind. But if that time really could be described as that is questionable to me. It's the time where you had a revolution after revolution which never really went anywhere.
Although I agree that we are regressing in general. But I genuinely am not sure what is the reason for all of this.

There's no western empire though. I don't know what to count as "the west", but to me the most logical answer would be European countries and it's offshoots. Which is not really an empire. US is it's own thing. Canada, UK and Australia are it's own thing. EU is a mix of multiple cultures under one roof pretending to be one thing. Russia is kinda it's own thing too since it's not in EU. when i compared modern day magical thinking to the pythagorean cult i was using ancient greece as an example, which was the first western european empire and probably the most influential one where you had a very hierarchical elitist society largely composed of disenfranchised slaves and a minority of wealthy nobility who were the so-called intellectuals/philosophers and their pronouncements were accepted at face value simply by virtue of their social status and their retarded ideas would become the foundation of all western european thought for millenia to come.
but magical thinking isn't limited to the west of course, as evidenced by things like the i ching that i mentioned before. i would say the main difference between the magical thinking of western society and that of eastern society is the latter seems to come from a place of epistemic humility at its very roots, i.e. "we don't know why the universe works this way but it does," whereas in the west it's more like, "this is how the universe works and this is why" and the "why" is not actual empirical evidence, it's just a projection of one's own human rationale onto the universe that ultimately amounts to "because i said so."
all of this is just the result of the idiosyncracies of the human brain and the way we perceive reality and process information, our brains are pattern-matching prediction machines that evolved that way because these compulsions gave us an advantage in a very narrow earth-based survival context, and throughout all of history we have been erroneously believing that this very specific tool can be repurposed for solving every kind of problem; we were given a toilet plunger and we saw that it worked really well for unclogging toilets and so we assumed that we could also use it to hammer nails and chop down trees and loosen screws, that because our brains worked well in the past at solving these very specific human-centric problems like when to plant crops or how to navigate in a boat then it must be capable of solving all of the mysteries of the universe.

I'll go back to being slightly on topic to interject that modern financial markets are basically a vehicle for fraud perpetrated by people who are rich and powerful enough to never see the inside of a courtroom over it. You CAN make money as an individual by playing in the market, but if you want something that will actually hold value in the long-term then buy four guns and enough ammo to last until doomsday.

Modern self-proclaimed "physicists" get offended at being asked relevant philosophical questions because they're philosophically illiterate.
For example, in Einstein's paper 'On the electrodynamics of moving bodies' he lays down the convention that, from A to B and also from B to A the one-way speed of light is equal, which is never justified, and he also uses the speed of light as a natural constant of fundational importance in his theory, with no interest at all on explaining where the empirical measurement comes from.
This is already damaging enough, to lose the same kind of interest that eventually led to solving the mystery of Newton's gravitational constant that, at the time, was also an empirical result with no explanation. Today you can look up the "standard model" and see for yourself how the convention went from the electron, the proton and the neutron to, last time I checked, like 40 different particles and several kinds of matter with absurd names, like "up, down, top, bottom quarks", "strange and anti matter", and a soykaf ton of incomprehensible forces, like the time they said their model of the atom just didn't work out mathematically so there must have been a "gluon" keeping everything glued (absurd as I said) and thus they enthusiastically announced the "discovery" of the gluon.
The same thing happened with the neutrino, its discoverer later regretted "making the mistake of discovering a particle that can't be observed" (the neutrino is assumed to exist because during an experiment some measurements were off from the predictions, but their lack of humility prevented them from admiting the theory was wrong and thus they interpreted the dissapereance of energy as an escaping neutrino).
Schrodinger's cat was an allegory made by Schrodinger to mock the people that thought particles actually could be in various places at the same time, not because they were observed to do that, but because a limitation of their mathematical formulas (known as "the law of uncertainty") didn't let them calculate both position and time at the same time (for some high-level mathematical soykaf I'm not even close to understanding (neither do them lol)), so they naturally assumed that particles literally acted like that, this is a common theme in modern physics know as platonism.
Another example of platonism is when people say that space time curves, that is to say, that instead of a body moving up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards, the directions themselves, up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards move, bringing any static, non-moving bodies with them, which is a complete contradiction of the Newtonian conception of a homogeneous space, where everything stays in the same place, eternally.
Now we ask ourselves, has such an outrageous thing as up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards ever been empirically observed to "move"? Of course not, and this shows the deep philosophical problem they are entering, and ignoring, because they shut down critizism by saying "the math works, the predictions are measured within a certain accuracy, the science is done, shut up".
No serious attempt to justify space not being homogeneous is made, an empirical observation of something that puts in doubt even the way of making measurements is never made, but the calculations work out, because they are circular. To calculate the curvature of space-time you must assume that it curves!!!
You must not assume that bodies fall to observe them falling, you must not assume that the stars move around the sun to see them as such, actually, even if you assume that stars move around the earth, they make absurd movements like seen in the geocentrist model, which was complicated and unsuccesful.
However, you MUST assume that the interpretation of Lorentz's laws (which from what I've heard have strong basis (I'm talking about stuff like Lorentz contraction)) and the interpretation of Einsteins space-time (which requires a Lorentzian manifold, a fourth dimensional shape) do MATHEMATICALLY represend a REAL phenomena for that phenomena to be CALCULATED, not observed.
If you IGNORE these assumptions and, for example, use Newtonian mechanics to calculate you will find that gravity is a force, and that many problems still remain unanswered, "aha!", the pseudoscientist will say, "Newtonian physics are insufficient, thus your whole argument is false, and because our modern physics have a _pretension_ of solving these problems, they represent _progress_, and whatever problem you might find within them are either filthy PHILOSOPHY or unimportant because 'this is just a theory UwU', now let me go and watch an hour long video of a technocratic propagandisting youtube channel with zeitgeist funding to brainwash people into accepting whatever bullshit quantum marketing they want (für die stock market) and make these uneducated niggers believe they can be a part of soyence too if they get angry and tribalistic whenever something challenges der hecking experts' theories and where all those public funds are going by calling them oscurantist pseudoscientists because we all know that literally everybody before Einstein had to suck off their local priest every time they wanted to publish a paper and if they ever bravely dared to say the TRUE and HONEST TRUTH they would be brutally murdered by burning in the stake".
If it is true that I can ignore philosophy and interpret mathematics as real, by commiting hyposthasis and falling for platonism, then I can count the following dimensions:
1. Length.
2. Width.
3. Length.
4. Time.
5. R.
6. G.
7. B.
RGB as in colors, so then I can take a spoon and heat it up with a lighter, which will become red after getting very hot, and they I can recieve public funds for going to a TV family show to tell people that my theory is that the spoon starts rotating through the fifth dimension when I heat it up inside of a penteract or whatever the fuarrrk because in reality we unintuitively live in 7 dimensions, and because I LITERALLY made a FORMULA to PREDICT that the rotation in the fifth dimension, when the spoon is heated, will be of so many degrees, which will cause it to become red, and then when I heated the spoon, it did become red, then that proves that the theory of fifth dimensional rotation of heat is true and in reality heat is not the kinetic force of the molecules that make up the spoon, no no no that's a clerical oscurantist Newtonian idea, but instead what really happens is that heat is not a kinetic force but a motherfucking ROTATION in the fifth dimension.
And by extension, when the sun falls and it becomes night time, the whole entire fuarrrking half of the earth rotates in the 7th dimensional space-time-RGB, and it simultaineously moves across space, time, and color space, god damn it give me more money I deserve it, and a nobel prize, NOW.
I have used this arguments against the common folk, and eerily they ALWAYS respond by CONSIDERING IT, they say that my mock theory to make fun of their faith is "another theory at the same level as the others (space-time, multiverses, strings)". So they say that they believe that the motherfucking change of color of a spoon IS a rotation in some dimension just as much as they believe that there's a paralell universe where they're born rich, which seems a good thing at first until you realize they whole heartedly believe that there actually is a paralell universe where they're rich.
fuarrrk YOU FEYNMAN, YOU LITERALLY ADMITED THAT QUANTUM SHIT WAS A FAILURE AND YOU STILL TOOK THE MONEY, fuarrrk YOU MICHIO KAKU AND NEIL TYSON, YOU NIGGAS KEEP APPEARING IN MY YOUTUBE SHORTS FEED.
For all my NEGERS that want to hear someone talk about this seriously, there's Alexander Unzicker, who has a youtube channel and he's an actual physicist.
Some alternatives to these crackpot 'theories' that the marketing teams of quantum chip producers keep insisting are hecking real are those that say that the speed of light is variable, that the universe does not expand, that the unification of physics has been a failure, that the mass of distant bodies have an effect on the natural constants in our locality and that the constants of nature might also be variable across the age of the universe, but these are pioneering studies that could benefit from a much bigger effort, and they represent the desire of the physicists that have not given up on understanding nature.

>very hierarchical elitist society largely composed of disenfranchised slaves and a minority of wealthy nobility
I think that's in a way what society used to be then. Not that I'm endorsing it. But back in the times where "only" tool to amplify work was to use other people you had to resort to slavery if you wanted to have a different life than to be an "small" non hierarchical group. And this isn't really that different all over the world. Slavery was commonplace sadly.
>their pronouncements were accepted at face value simply by virtue of their social status and their retarded ideas would become the foundation of all western european thought for millenia to come.
I too think sadly this is a bit of how things are. Cause we can't really all think about everything for ourselves. There isn't enough time for that or we don't have the means. So we let some people do the work and then we hear what they have to say. I again wish it was different, but there's only ~15 hours in the day which you can spend, and you have to take care of your needs first and then maybe you can do something else.
Then again, I want to go against saying that their ideas were retarded. Not many other civilizations made buildings or sculptures like the Greeks did. Neither was democracy invented anywhere else from what I gather. There's a reason it has been so influential. It genuinely is one of the impressive civilizations that ever existed.
>ultimately amounts to "because i said so."
Yeah, I think you are right here. Western thought has a thing for propping up one idea and trying to say the whole universe works like that and it is really damaging down the line. I would even go a bit further and say that eastern thought is way closer to how reality works. I'm no scholar or practitioner of it, but I was genuinely impressed with the little of Buddhist or Hindu thought and practice I had seen. I also feel eastern art is often way more subtle too. Zen gardens come to my mind. Which don't really feel like a creation but more so the are about taking care of the environment so that it becomes beautiful by itself.
>solving these very specific human-centric problems like when to plant crops or how to navigate in a boat then it must be capable of solving all of the mysteries of the universe.
Yeah, I agree here too. And it worries me. Cause this is the thinking which is needed to come up with clever solutions and techniques. Which are fine on their own, but it turns out this is easy. Building a rocket is actually trivial all things considered. It has been done thousands of times. While true ethical wisdom or finding how the world is turns out to be difficult. So we are left in this weird place where you have endless tricks to do everything, but our actual minds are degrading.
I genuinely worry this will end up in disaster.

Fart a bit.
Yeah, your RGB extension of common dimensions is as valid a theory as another, if you can design experiments that show it works and can predict stuff better than current theories. Relativistic physics works and gives more precise results than newtonian physics. In fact, newtonian physics can be described as an approximation of general relativity.
I don't see how mass bending space-time is any weirder than a "force" that can act accross any distance without a supporting medium. A force is when I push/pull something, not when two things just stand here.

The RBG theory is designed so that it can trivially and accurately predict the heating of a spoon, and also trivially many more phenomena. Its purpose is to demonstrate that a theory can be constructed so that it predicts perfectly well, but has no clear philosophical foundations (why would space and time be grouped together as the abstract concept of "dimension" being that space and time are completely different things?, and to make matters more absurd, they can also be grouped together with RBG, the only explanation a modern phisicist will give is that they're called dimensions because when you write them in vector form they're all stacked together in the paper, is other words, they are dimensions mathematically, but clearly not physically), has no elegance and complicates things and conceptually doesn't make sense unless you let the math "speak for itself" (saying that heat is not molecular kinetic force but some high order manifold rotation or translation is something that has no real meaning beyond the mathematical, and what precisely bothers me is that "space-time curvature" suffers of the same problem).
>a "force" that can act accross any distance without a supporting medium

More like a hill somewhere in korea because I'm from a country where negros fuarrrk donkeys (dead serious) and pink dolphins swim in rainbow rivers. Oh wait a minute, I'm not a gay.
>you do know IBM and rigetti have achieved computational results from quantum computers?
idk about quantum computers, all I know is that the highest physics has ever been was when the standard model had the proton, the neutron and the electron, and the only two natural constants that still stood unexplained where the speed of light and planck's constant, thus reducing the mystery of nature to space and time, the two kantian sensory intuitions. Then, it was no more like this, but is just fuarrrking exploded and turned into an incomprehensible mess that nobody actually takes seriously bcuz everything is just a theory and we're waiting for the next better one aren't we mate?, isn't soyence a process that keeps getting better and better so everything we know will just get replaced one day? By that reasoning I don't take seriously most of the "advancements" made from the 60's onwards (in so called theoretical physics), even less the stuff that comes out in the daily.
Back in the day, when they called themselves natural phisolophers, like Newton did, and their pursuit was not for a bunch of math that happens to work and that's all that matters, but for a reasoning of why things were the way they were, for most of its history to understand better God's creation, they deserved to be called men of science, today we just have birds inside golden cages they chose to live inside of, money and status they sought and if the human mind didn't have the brilliance it took to advance science further, it was time to abandon it (at least when it comes to motion).
And I just noticed something, the RGB theory is not falsifiable: if a shift in color in a heated spoon IS NOT a high-dimension rotation, there is no possible empirical experiment that shows that it isn't, because the aparent truth that there is such 7-dimensional manifold relies on interpreting the list of 7 numbers as such. If I were to express the whole mathematical RGB theory in pure axiomatic logic, could I not change my interpretation of "dimensions" to "pure logic" thus conclude that the change in color of a spoon when heated with a ligher is in reality a mathematical proof and nothing like a 7D manifold?, after all, both things are mathematically equivalent, remember the saying "mathematics is the art of giving the same name to different things", so I could also interpret those 7 numbers and their set of formulas (laws) as an algorithm or set of algorithms in a turing machine, thus in reality it's not a rotation in the 5th dimension but a calculation done with the (according to many, illegible) german franktur font, or if you so very wish, the exact font used in the calculations can be abstracted and we can go back to defining what is computed and how with logic I guess.
But I guess you get the point, if I can look at those 7 numbers as whatever the fuarrrk I want, because that's just what math allows, then what favours an interpretation over the other? According to pseudoscientific quacks that are in on it for the money, none of this matters because it's filthy philosophy and they would never be caught dead pondering it. Those who have no idea but are not willing to sober up from this misdirection of physics will simply say that all interpretations are valid but we only pick the 7 dimensions one because it "makes more intuitive sense". Now, of course, the problem of wheter it's scientific to assert an interpretation as true because it "makes intuitive sense" over the other mathematically equivalent candidates is hecking philosophical, so nobody really wants to talk about it either.
So my conclusion is that philosophy is fuarrrking awesome and you're all missing out.

aside from the magical thinking behind prediction markets and things of that nature, capitalism itself is fundamentally based on magical thinking and is very much a product of western thought which is also fundamentally based on magical thinking all the way down to the linguistic and metaphysical level, specifically the magic of reification.
western religious beliefs are all based on a story about the universe being called into being by the word of god. it cannot be overstated how psychologically significant this is. in western thought, words are things. anything a person says is an objective absolute statement of fact by default. this is why when we talk to each other about our opinions we constantly have to use these clumsy qualifiers like "i think" and "in my opinion" - eastern languages never use these kinds of phrases because they are completely unnecessary, eastern thought understands words as events rather than things, in eastern languages the words people say are subjective and context-dependent opinions by default. in eastern thought language is understood to be a completely separate thing from reality, language is just a cognitive model that can never capture the full truth of anything. but in western thought, we don't think of our cognitive models for interpreting reality as just models, we think they are reality itself, we project all of our cognitive models like language and mathematics and economics etc. as mystical properties of the universe.
this reification impulse forms the foundation of capitalism and modern finance as we understand it today. the stock market is just a bunch of people trading "things" that don't actually exist and they don't actually own. nobody really owns a piece of microsoft. microsoft is not a thing, microsoft is just an idea. microsoft could go out of business tomorrow and all of the shares people own in microsoft would become nothing and microsoft would become nothing. the laws of physics do not allow for the creation or destruction of things, so obviously these shares are not things and microsoft is not a thing; they are just ideas that we treat as things and we divide up and buy and sell and trade as things. money is not a thing, it's an idea. we try to make it into a thing through all kinds of weird mystical rituals like hammering it out of shiny rare metals or printing it on special ornate pieces of paper or digitally generating it with convoluted cryptographic algorithms to try to reify the idea and make it look and act like a thing so that we can continue treating it like a thing, but it's still not a thing. and reality has a habit of periodically reminding us of this fact, coldly and cruelly and without warning.
the real truth of the matter is that we are all insane, to some degree or another. our models for understanding reality are useful fictions which we forget are fictions and mistake for reality itself, ironically making us even more ignorant of reality than we were before developing and using the models. we think and speak in a nonsensical language that might as well be the language of a person who thinks they are god, where everything we think and say is given concrete validity which supercedes the validity of what actually exists around us.

That's a fun little idea you came up with.
It's probably partially true like most things are..

This was always a thing. Science has always been mystified into a secular interpretation of religion.
Most scientific study articles always focus on pop psychology tropes to drive discussion.
Whether it is about female intuition, older sibling syndrome, brain development theory, etc

>I challenge you to make this post less soykaf andelaborate on why you think want you think instead of sounding like an llm )
i challenge you to handle the responsibility of moderatorship like a mature adult and not abuse your position to powerflex with redditesque vague warnings and tone policing and eventually erode the trust that has been placed in you by the admin. i guarantee you that my existence in this community as an anonymous user will outlive your existence as a pseudonymous moderator. i can cycle my ip address and evade bans all day every day, but when your name becomes mud you are done, no more mod status ever again. perhaps someone lurking in the irc channel could log the conversation of you disputing the decision and post it here for my amusement.

jannies/trannies here are retards. the quality of the site has continously declined because they spend their time issuing "warnings" and deleting quality content instead of cultivating a good environment.

once again lainchan is hosting cp. no moderation to be found. what a disgusting state this soykaf hole is in.

it does get removed, but far too slowly. I can't imagine it would be too hard to automatically filter the more blatant ones since they're very idiosyncratic

i'm trying to imagine a world where applefuck is competent enough to do that.

What usefulness do you see for them here? You're not guilty as a visitor if someone else posts that stuff here and you accidentally see it before it's deleted, do you realize that? This also happens all the time on X and even YouTube.

I don't think it's particularly important as an individual node. It's just an outer ring of the main sites where people with unique ideas and ways of thinking may find themselves, and it's simple enough to keep tabs on. Drop an occasional CP link, maybe work it into some sort of parallel construction later. Why else do they delete quality content and prevent real discussion? Why do the mods behave like extreme ESLs or bots? None of Appleman's replies have ever seemed human to me. You just take over or set up a bunch of these types of small alt chans, run them in a largely automated manner, and watch.

incompetent even by fed standards.

appleman is a retard, he's native english likely, but being a sub 80iq soykaf means he can't articulate too good.
lainchan used to be fun and well run, but now it is retarded and soy.

Incompetent relative to what? You're thinking too hands on and linear goal oriented. That's not how you model and control complex systems.

Like look at this guy:
https://lainchan.org/q/res/14050.html
It doesn't even matter, people still use the site. It naturally filters out a certain personality type and selects for people who are codependent, submissive, dissociative, autistic, or otherwise highly malleable.
Acid Burn · 2026-07-01 11:35
Are there other chans that are worth keeping in mind in case lainchan enshittifies too much?
Yeah, I know about indiachan, but it's too new and I find it still too early to really put any high hopes in it.
