Now there's HandBrake for easy encoding, but the cropping there is really cumbersome. Do you have any recommendations?

I never thought it would actually happen for some reason, but has anyone else started to suspect genuine LLM-made posts/replies on 4chan? Here is an example where I believe I may have found some: https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/108944398/ The thread OP was created by me. Admittedly it is not very high-quality, and getting replies with things like "fuarrrk off retard" has always been a part of how imageboards work. But what concerns me here is that I don't believe a human (or even a schizo human) could have written several of the replies to that thread. The anger is unprompted, and there are multiple posts seemingly made by the same entity. From what I understand, most real people who make replies like that typically just sage & never come back. It struck me as very unusual for it keep going AND start "fights" with other posters in the thread. This has happened before on /g/, and a few months ago it was far more obvious... as 0-reply threads would get a detailed response (chock-full of em dashes, far more than a person would use) within a few minutes. It lasted for a few days and then seemingly ended. I don't have many examples on hand, but here are some that I remember: https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/107265916/#107266028 https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/107264690/#107265102 https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/107264997/#107265070 Sorry if this is stupid, I don't know where else I'd post this. One such tactic would aim at gradually making these boards less interesting for their users. One way to achieve this would be to regularly post content that looks genuine (using the right language, imagery, etc.) yet is meaningless – this would dilute the message of these boards and make their threads uninteresting, thereby reducing their attractiveness and sense of community. Recent developments in artificial intelligence enabling researchers to automatically generate credible extremist sentences make such a tactic cheap and easy to implement."

Hey lainons. So, I found these motherboards lying on the street, and they looked pretty good, so I picked them up. I connected both to the power and they seem to work; an LED turns on. The only thing is that I don't have a CPU fan, just the PSU. I don't know much about hardware, so sorry for my ignorance. What do you think? Do you think I could get them to work? Not sure on the other one. If the heat sink doesn't have thermal paste preapplied then make sure you get some thermal paste as well. Clean the CPU surface with isopropyl alcohol before you apply it. The board might not boot successfully if it expects certain RAM slots to be filled. There's typically a message that says something about the RAM not being in the right slot, sometimes the board will have an arrow pointing at the slots that need to be filled first. Check the manual for that type of information.

Today I figured I was going to try and fix an old CRT monitor I have (I have zero experience with these). It was only displaying a single colour channel and I figured it would be easy enough. I removed the carcass, grounded the flyback and cleaned everything with pressurized isopropyl alcohol. I figured I had to mess with the neck board (I think it's called) which was fixed inside an iron cage. To do that, I loosened the cage with a soldering iron. I connected the flyback again and turned it on, but now it's hissing very loudly and not displaying anything at all. I can't figure out what I did wrong.

Is there a non-soykaf resource (preferably a book) to learn simple yet secure web development ? I like the Odin project but they use npm and the fact that themselves pull so many different resources from different websites is making the ADHD worse. They also heavily rely on google. I want to teach myself to make websites for personal use but i am also interested in making some for local government agencies and i am not sure if that's a separate field from the data mining ad ridden experience that other resources seem to prep you for.

>>93042 > simple yet secure web development Imo, if you want to do web dev as a focus instead of security research, you mostly should just pick a good technology stack and trust it and its best practices. Security is way too much of a serious business to be a side dish. You will have to understand all the low level details of protocols, operating systems, system calls responsible for threading, etc. Although, there are some high level basics that everybody should know, like SQL injections for example.

I had an experience a few months ago (honestly I can't tell at all when this was...) where I was stalking this Microsoft's security engineer, and ended up in their twitter. It was a mtf trans btw. Anyway, I was stalking him for a few days, until somewhere at midnight (east coast time) they started to complain about how Microsoft is retarded and that they got fired. I don't recall the details exactly, but he was very clear about how a lot of security in MS is done through obscurity, and that he hoped they'd implode or something like that. The next day all the messages were gone, and I just treated all of this as "he was clearly mentally unstable for being fired, exposed some random soykaf, and regretted later". I didn't really make this connection at ALL until a few days ago. I mean, to be fair, I am not even sure if I should be making this post, as if it's truly that guy, from this information it'd be trivial to track him. >>93654 Anyone who tells you they're "more productive" on Linux is bullshitting you. For all the annoyances Windows 11 comes with, all you have to do to install and run a program is double click an installer and then run the executable. And 999 times out of 1000, it will just work. On Linux a lot of soykaf is improperly packaged by your distro maintainers. Take OBS for example. The Archlinux package comes broken by default. So does the Ubuntu package. Only the Flatpak version works 100% because it's first-party, but if you don't already know that you're fuarrrked. The way desktop Linux works right now simply doesn't respect your time. You as a user are expected to know how to troubleshoot hyper-particular problems in software projects that you aren't a maintainer of in order to fix basic things that should work out of the box. An operating system is a platform for installing and running software. To be a good platform for installing and running software, it needs to have as little friction in doing that as possible. It should not be something you need to actively babysit. Diehard Linux users never understand this basic concept.
Dozer · 2026-08-12 06:25
>>93740 >You as a user are expected to know how to troubleshoot hyper-particular problems in software projects that you aren't a maintainer of in order to fix basic things that should work out of the box Not only software, but hardware, too. I had to troubleshoot an odd problem in which bluetooth did not work. I assumed that it was software related, but after a while I decided to check if the hardware was even recognized. turns out it didn't even show up. I had to hard reset the laptop and unplug and plug the batteries. Turns out it was electric static messing with the receiver. Could have happened with any OS, but I assumed it was a bad update that happened for a while, before checking other avenues.
Koos van der Merwe · 2026-08-12 06:55
>>93740 >>93743 This is true, but still better than being goycattle viced by glowniggers on windows. Overcoming the problem you describe would require lot of things to be unified and uniformised, which would require a central organization that decides things that other must follow. And the moment such an organization would born, jews would already try to take it over, ane very probably succeed sooner or later. Being soykafty protects linux from being even soykaftier. It's in a local minimum on the quality curve that prevents it from falling into a global minimum that is being turned into epstein-coalition goycattle prison-system software.
Roy Batty · 2026-08-12 08:33
>>93740 Yes, that is true and that is exactly what I want for myself, however, the "non-technical Linux" niche also exists since at least mid 2000s. Imo the best "Linux for commoners" of modern day is Bazzite: 1. Immutable and very hard to break 2. Updates are done the absolute peak non-intrusive way: a new system image is silently downloaded in background and silently works from the next boot and can't fuarrrk up anything because you can't even install anything in a way that makes updates able to break it 3. The main way to install anything is flatpaks, and the default app store - Bazaar - is 100% flatpaks 4. Still leaves some escape hatches for user to try becoming poweruser and prepare themselves for real Linux before hopping to their next distro: rpm-ostree, distroboxes, custom base images, etc

>>93740 >Anyone who tells you they're "more productive" on Linux is bullshitting you. I completely agree with this statements but your supporting arguments seem weak at best. >all you have to do to install and run a program is double click an installer and then run the executable. And 999 times out of 1000, it will just work. Consumption is not production. Whether or not the IT guy has a fun time installing a software stack 13 levels deep for the MechQ team has nothing whatsoever to do with translating AFD markups to fully modeled HVAC projects. And he does not, in fact, have a fun time, he does not get to "just double click on an installer," if things have come to the point where he has to go to the employee's desk to click on anything at all then the first things he will double click on will be inside the Event Viewer and RegEdit. Linux does not aid productivity because it does not operate production stacks, not because operating production stacks is made tenuous and ponderous with bugs. Windows 10 was quite difficult to manage for meaningful mechanical design production because that "999 times out of 1000" is a profound overestimate for production software, and the necessary steps to ensure remote license access and other real world production necessities for instance are far more finicky than running an installer. (Before anyone says "what about freeCAD" -- don't be fuarrrking retarded, AutoCAD is the smallest part of an AutoCAD design stack, even if it was a full replacement-in-kind for ACAD it would not be replacement-in-kind because the -kind is not "a precision drawing/modeling application," it is "an application which runs all 13 requisite CAD plugin modules and engineering calc apps."). >Take OBS for example. The Archlinux package comes broken by default. >You as a user are expected to know how to troubleshoot hyper-particular problems in software projects that you aren't a maintainer of in order to fix basic things that should work out of the box. Happened a lot during the transition from AutoCAD 2018 to 2020. It was really funny watching small eng shops that thought they could downsize their support teams during covid just plain fuarrrking close. >>93740 The poor developer experience is often overlooked. As a platform you're trying to target, Linux is terrible. I tried to make an AppImage for my Flutter application. Worked perfectly fine on my Fedora install. After release, I immediately get a report from an Arch user about a missing dependency required for tray icon support "libayatana-appindicator". Flatpaks are too complicated, require too much work, and depend on server infrastructure. I don't want to rely on any third party to distribute my software, whether that's Flathub or package maintainers. Compiling software though is a waste of user's time and resources. It's unreasonable to expect end users to do that. As a developer, I want a platform that makes things easy for me and end users, so I can just focus on application logic. A good app format would be inseparable from a specific OS, and make no attempt at being more universal.

The only features I really need are opengl support and a media player (mp3, m4a, ogg, flac, mp4, webm). If you're asking for X minimalism that's probably the best answer. Yes, moc depends on ncurses and ffmpeg, basically all music players will depend on ffmpeg genius. I need to research why that is, but it's been falling to the wayside in favor of work, club bullshit, and assignments I have no idea what my budget should be. I am a jewass and want to only pay like 200$ or something. Not sure if I should be paying more. I looked into some of the used Thinkpads, but I think I'd have to use a chink battery, and I don't want to do that on a laptop with important information in the instance the battery decides to explode or some soykaf like that. My current laptop is an E7440, but it's slow as tits even with Debian minimal on it, and the battery is fuarrrked, so I can no longer use it without plugging it in. >>93982 It probably depends on where you live, but here there are plenty of decent second-hand laptops for the equivalent of 200$. Don't get a thinkpad though, they are a meme and overpriced. Just get whatever you find that is in decent condition.

>>93983 >Don't get a thinkpad though, they are a meme and overpriced. Original lainon here. That's what I've always thought, and that's why I've always bought dell latitudes because they don't have the meme tax. If I wanted to buy new, then what kind of budget should I have? Also, for used laptops, what about the battery? some of them aren't made anymore, or if they come with one, they're iffy sometimes. that can be a bit of a roulette.

>>93975 >I'm not convinced, again, right now my best option for x11 seems to be https://git.dec05eba.com/phoenix/about/ it's smaller and I actually understand the code. Well, okay. If you think that's best for you. I was suggesting something that might work with less hassle (and doesn't tell you not to run it on real hardware :p) >that's false, I can think of counter-examples. if you really feel like you have to say something, just say that you don't know of any media player that doesn't use ffmpeg. >doesn't provide any Saying you can think of counterexamples is pointless if you won't name one. But yes, obviously I know that not *all* media players depend on ffmpeg. That's why I said "basically all" instead of "all media players depend on ffmpeg." As you say, reading comprehension? >both terminals and window managers predate the x11 protocol. Again, I think everybody knows this (and I have to imagine you could have deduced that I know this), I just assumed you weren't using W or Wayland, or something terribly far off the beaten path, given that you're asking randos on a forum. >I have read suckless code and it's pretty bad. it took me less time to write my own window manager than to figure out wtf dwm was doing. Well, that's fine, but again, why ask for suggestions if that's your attitude? And I have to say I agree with you in regards to Surf's being based on webkitgtk is really just an offloading of clusterfuck. Honestly, it gives me some trouble sometimes (although I am using it right now) If you're really as leet of a programmer as you seem to think you are, then more likely than not, nobody here will tell you anything useful, because there are numerous setups that you can make work. If you really have the capability to write your own window manager and drivers (that support opengl) then that's by far your best option.

>>94024 >sudo apt upgrade-full Next time do btrfs snapshot before that. They work like purely functional languages so that actual copies are only created when files change, which means that if your update modifies 100 files, the whole snapshot only takes space equal to the summed size of previous versions of these 100 files.

>>94030 > what the hell did you just say... When you use btrfs as your filesystem, you can "save game" before update and then "load game" if anything goes wrong, and it will use exactly as much disk space as needed, because it doesn't just mindlessly copy everything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy-on-write

>>94031 i've been reading up on btrfs and it just sounds unreliable and dangerous. bad chances with data recovery and prone to heavy fragmentation... i've been using ext4 so far, but even that is not great...
Roy Batty · 2026-08-28 17:40
>>94035 This is nonsensical, it's less safe than backing up data to external device, because if your whole btrfs drive dies due to hardware failure, those snapshots obviously also die. But that's all the "extra" danger there is, compared to copying it regular way elsewhere. It also can self-heal in case of bit flips from cosmic rays and self-defragment automagically. Not by default though, only if you use RAID1 or dup profile. Read more.

>>94039 not him, but the fedora guy talking about fedora isn't a reliable source: his job is to do damage control for the company. I'm pretty sure btrfs isn't the only filesystem with copy on write. and that entire approach is misguided to begin with: just have the user data and the os on different partitions. that's how it has always been done, that way your migration won't depend on filesystem internals
Nell · 2026-08-29 00:38
>>94037 >automagically well if a youtuber says it... i'm just not used to anything but e4, so i'm not sure if there's anything i dislike. the standard "i'm used to it, it works, scared to change" approach. i live in fear so btrfs really autodefragments? will it be slower? my resources are low.
The Plague · 2026-08-29 20:29
>>94042 > just have the user data and the os on different partitions And what exactly does that solve? With snapshots you literally rollback to the previous state in a single command. You won't need to reinstall your OS from scratch to that system partition if update fails. You won't need to configure it from scratch, install system software from scratch, services, fstab, etc. You will literally get the exact state with any tiny customizations and every little nuance of file metadata as it was at that exact moment of snapshot.
Jim Hilger · 2026-08-29 20:41
>>94042 the btrfs cow upgrade also doesn't depend on filesystem internals and you can easily script the rollback system. I'd have to think about it but the only issue I can think about which surely could be scripted away is how btrfs subvols will interact with the boot partition.
Drifter · 2026-08-29 20:54
>>94052 The only real issue I've found so far is that fragmentation becomes heavy with certain kinds of large files that are very often overwritten by software that works with them, particularly vm and db volumes. The solution to this is to simply manually exclude them from COW altogether by doing something like "chattr +C /home/user/vms".
Pris · 2026-08-29 21:07
>>94052 > how btrfs subvols will interact with the boot partition I did research a bit, surely it would be problematic to rollback on a live broken system. And the workflow seems to be very simple: > btrfs subvolume snapshot / /.snapshots/pre-update > ... update ... > ... broken state ... > mv /.snapshots/pre-update /@_rollback > btrfs subvolume set-default <subvolid-of-@_rollback> / > (subvolid can be found with "btrfs subvolume list /") After that set-default, reboot and it will boot into the state of system captured at snapshot.
