Arch Linux config
Mario Rossi · 2026-03-07 17:06
Just installed Arch for the first time BTW. No archinstall script or other cheats. Still ironing out the bugs (browser glitches, build errors in yay, f1-12 keys don't work in i3), but got the basics working (wifi, music player, image editor, sound works with dmix, etc).
Would really appreciate config advice from experienced Arch users. I'm not asking for tech support - the whole point of this is to force myself to get better. Just ideas on how to get the most stable build. First things to do, which packages to avoid, etc.

arch is bloat. sorry you had to find out like this.
Boris Grishenko · 2026-03-08 06:47
If you have to update, update after doing important things (not before), when you know you have a bit of time when the computer can be down. Always reboot after updating the kernel or things like that.

Keep two kernels (for example: normal + lts) ready for boot so kernel updates don't fuark your PC

This, arch is bloat.
Arch doesn't make you any better at linux.
You archived nothing.
You should go back to reddit or wherever you came from.
God I hate arch users so much

One thing is that if you are trying to stick to a minimal install, its very easy to accidentally pull in all of plasma-desktop or hundreds of gnome dependencies installing one application, so be careful about what you pull in. If you are using a tiling WM with GTK packages, you may be interested in this, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gtk-nocsd-git . It just disables client side decorations for GTK applications, so there is no redundant giant X wasting valuable screen space.

There is no reason why anyone in 2026 should still be using corporate linux distributions (aside from your job, of course). Debian and Arch are the only two distributions which haven't given in to money while still being usable by people with only mild autism.

Why are you talking about corporate linux? They are just being elitist/pedantic/gatekeeping. I'm guessing they use gentoo, LFS or their own custom OS.

Following a wiki is not the accomplishment arch users make it out to be, that's my entire point.
>Debian and Arch
So it's systemd (stable) and systemd (reddit)
>while still being usable by people with only mild autism
This coming from someone that thinks he did something by following a wiki is rich

The Arch Wiki is one of the most useful linux resources out there no matter what your distribution is. Why are you not following it? It’s not about “thinking I did something” it’s about having a computer that actually works. And SystemD is makes handling daemons straightforward and easy, you know for people who again need their computer to work. The systemd argument is has been over for over a decade at this point. Just accept that it’s as much a part of linux as GNU as whole, or even more so. You don’t even get any imaginary internet points on websites like these anymore for being stuck in the Obama era.

Says everything about your general mindset.
And yes, the internet is rapidly dying, especially sites like this.
People get their ideas and positions from AI and AI is largely trained on reddit.
Also lots of Indians. I give lainchan maybe another year at most till it's as much of a bot and Indian soykafhole as 4chan.
Tl;Dr: you and your Hivemind wins, I hope you choce one day on your reddit-gold kind stranger.

It'd probably be a good idea to colonize ourchan.org as a backup. they don't turn their nose up at effortposts unlike on 4skin and Q posters are quickly bullied off the site.

Will using arch turn you into a wizard? (srs question)

No, much worse, it will turn you into a troon.

The problem with systemd is similar to that of rust and wayland, many of us don't want it yet it still gets pushed down everyone's throat.
systemd: bloated.
rust: trademark issues and the fact it's being used to destroy long-standing projects of communities that absolutely don't want it.
wayland: part of the attempt to kill x11.
All are part of the enshittification of libre software and its environment, just look at the effects, they literally fuarrrked up the Xorg repo, are harrassing the Xlibre dev, somehow got XFCE's devs to change some core component to a mother fuarrrking rust rewrite, etc.
Oh, and you've heard this a million times but it's true, why the fuarrrk are you rewriting everything on rust? Do you notice how absolutely stupid the "it's memory safe" argument is? All that software was built with c, and it fuarrrking works you dipshit!, it's not like it could not possibly fuarrrking work without rust(TM), and yet you decide to rewrite everything on it, with no regards to the fact the rewrites are incomplete and buggy, and still push it to prod like with the linux kernel itself.
It is also a waste of time, even if memory safety mattered at all.

Are we running in circles, chasing our own tails or what?
Besides that first awkward experience it looks comfy, also somewhat active! Thanks for the heads up lain!

OP here. I think the browser glitches were just a missing KDE dependency. Installed Firefox instead and it works fine. F keys are also fine - I just forgot about the fn lock. Not sure why yay build was failing, but tried it with a different package and everything worked.

Sounds like a good idea, but how stable is it? Does it ever break GUIs that are expecting to have control of the entire window?
