Home Servers/Labs

How have your guys' homelab setups been running? Are you doing anything new or setting up new services you'll actually use?
I've spent the day trying to get my R510 to recognize this H200 I flashed and threw in earlier and to start iDRAC6. My plan is to run the machine with proxmox and ZFS for a house-wise NAS, jellyfin instance, and pi-hole for the people in my apartment who dont want to set up dnscrypt but want some blacklisting. I've spent several hours wading through Dell's Enterprise ecosystem, which has been enlightening. There are so many redundant services it's kind of funny. SUU, SLI, RACADM, USC, OME, OSMA, the list goes on and on.
Right now I have jellyfin and pihole running off an optiplex with a 500GB HDD and E6000 processor, so I can't play any large files or push the thing to any limits without it fouling up; I'll put in a cheap P400 when I get the money.

i have no idea how to start to have the time for this hobby.
still, it's something i'd love to get into as soon as humanly possible. i love the photos :)

You have "no idea". Meaning that you'd as soon buy a blimp as a computer for how confused you are? I don't usually like spoonfeeding "howie" posts but I'll bite:
Step 1: Get an old computer from your closet/find an SFF on craigslist for forty bucks
Step 2: Hook it up to a switch that's also connected to your router
Step 3: Install CentOS/OpenBSD/Win10_IoT on it depending on what you want to run
Step 4: Install services you want to use and will use
Step 5: Learn the hardware/software ecosystem you've chosen. You'll probably learn the other ones in the future.
Step 6: Source/buy upgrades as needed
Step 7: ???
Step 8: PROFIT

My H200 is throwing a sihtfit every time I try to use megarec.exe on it. Apparently I need megarec3.exe but the only source for it is a locked forum page. This blows

>How have your guys' homelab setups been running?
Smoothly. I have recently stuffed 6 decade-old disks into my newest computer (13 years old) to make a raidZ2 array. I could have gotten newer disks and even replaced some that are already in use, but I like running my hardware through the floor before discarding it.
>Are you doing anything new or setting up new services you'll actually use?
Not really. I already have pretty much everything I want. I kinda vaguely wanted a place where I could just dump my files and let God sort them out, and now I have it. Though I'm now also thinking of getting a bunch of old 500 GB disks I have laying around and making a BTRFS raid10 array to check out how BTRFS works and see if it can pretend to compete with ZFS or if it really is just a meme.
>proxmox
>jellyfin
>pi-hole
Bloat, bloat and bloat. I don't know why you'd need Proxmox just to share files, or even Jellyfin, when sshfs is a thing (inb4 Windows luser) but you do you. Also I forgot what pi-hole does, but if I'm remembering it right and it's just a glorified DNS filter -- personally I run unbound on my server with rules to block undesirable domains and have it as the DNS resolver for my other computers.

>i have no idea how to start to have the time for this hobby.
Do you have any idea how to start to have the time for any hobby? I don't think server autism is that much more time consuming than most other hobbies. For me at least, it is something I jump into once in a while and then it just works until I decide to touch it again.
>>90606
>Hook it up to a switch that's also connected to your router
Any router can route things just fine. Don't go pointing the newbie into the optional stuff before he even gets something up and running in the first place.
>Install CentOS/OpenBSD/Win10_IoT
All garbage-tier OSes. Stick to good old Debian. It is probably the easiest distro to find help for, which is a very important detail when you are getting started. Arch is a close second, but as a total beginner it is probably above your pay-grade.
If you want to be fancy and use a BSD, stick to FreeBSD as it will bust your balls a lot less than OpenBSD. All the schizophrenia that goes into making OpenBSD secure and unusable is overkill for something will only be accessed through the LAN in its busiest days (unless you gone and got one of your computers pwned, but then you have bigger issues than a script kiddie hogging all your bandwidth while watching your anime collection)
>the rest
Decent-enough advice.

.But what if you have many things to connect anon? Then What? Also who doesn't have a switch just lying around somewhere?
>All garbage-tier OSes.
I don't get not recommending Win10. What if something you use only runs on windows? What's wrong with CentOS? My experience with OpenBSD is that its ecosystem is a lot more cohesive and well designed than FreeBSD's, but you get less toys to play around with.

Doesn't matter; if I need or want to run it then so be it.

... this isn't /g/ anon.

How? It was everywhere and still is.
>if I'm remembering it right and it's just a glorified DNS filter
Yes, but set up is quick and does the job well enough for those who use it
>Stick to good old Debian
speaking of bloat...

Yes, you got me. After 2014 every last person got brainwashed into thinking that one company gatekeeping 70% of websites is an acceptable state of affairs. Now only bots complain about having to fill 10 captchas before being allowed to load a page.

I finally used an old pc to dive into homelabbing. Its an old sff pc with soykafty cpu and one 1tb harddrive. Just trying what i really need. It wont run 24/7, cuz theres no need, but now I can "legaly obtain" my favorite anime and youtube mixes and play them on my phone lying in bed. So far its comfy.

any lights coming on on the board when powered on and if so, what color? has the board booted from the SD card you're using before? what distro did you install on the SD card? first guess would be that the distro isn't booting.
if you're positive the SD card is functional, and the distro installation on the SD card is correct, and the power supply you're is the correct on, and your HDMI cable is working, and your HDMI monitor is working (and was turned on), and all the other sanity checks you can think of, then you could try getting a shell via a serial connection via the serial gpio pins.

I was talking in the context of giving advice to a newbie. I'd be surprised if he had a few things to connect, let alone many.

Are we still talking about server software? If so, then it is irredeemable trash.

Love this thread. I've been playing around with servers for almost 10 years but I need your advice.
I generally prefer to stay away from corporate influenced technology as I'm a fan of simplicity and privacy. That said I recently got a job in cybersecurity and I deal mostly with RHEL servers, and the previous knowledge helped me a lot even though I had barely touched RHEL/Fedora before.
Now I'm undecided between sticking to "traditional" stacks for my servers, or moving to more "modern" solutions (which tend to be more corporate, sadly). I also generally dislike modern software so it's hard for me to adopt it, but I admit some of it can be useful.
I have 3 small cheap KVM VPS on different countries with Debian. There I have a traditional mail stack (Postfix+Dovecot+Rspamd), XMPP (Prosody), Matrix (Synapse), Nextcloud, Webmail (Roundcube), and a website + blog (Nginx).
At home I have a rack with an OPNsense firewall and a managed Ubiquiti PoE switch. At first I built an N100 Proxmox server that draws ~5W at idle (I'm proud of it), but then I got 2 ARM SBCs (Raspberry Pi 5+Radxa Rock 5C) and I'm using them as Docker hosts (together they use 5W as well). There I host Jellyfin, Mumble (VoIP), Forgejo (Git), Frigate (2 PoE cameras), MediaMTX (streaming), Navidrome (music), Vaultwarden (Passwords), Xonotic server.
I was reluctant at first but Docker was pretty convenient for backups with Restic (just backup the entire directory with the compose files and bind mounts) and moving containers to another host (just send the directory through SSH and start the container there).
I'd like your honest opinions on these:
1. Should I move all my VPS to Docker as well? That way everything would be consistent, which would make backups easy, and maybe it's useful for my job. That said, I always feel Docker is kind of hacky and abstracts away everything. Should I move everything to something like FreeBSD Jails instead? I hear they have a more elegant design.
2. I'm also looking into maybe replacing Postfix/Dovecot with Stalwart which is a single-binary Rust solution that handles everything, and also supports JMAP, an IMAP successor that handles phones better supposedly. It's a bit too new though (still not 1.0), is this a bad idea? There are around 20 people who use my server actively.

It's a 2B and both lights stay on without blinking. I'll try the GPIO thing later if I can find some pins and a serial cable. I heard that the firmware could be the problem but I haven't loaded a copy onto the flash drive yet.

CP DTAC?? Or a MSP or customer? Or just actual RHEL servers?
Also people still play Xonotic? Is anyone on insta+hook anymore?
