Do you guys use home assistant? I have always designed my own PCBs, and written firmware for them, and went as far as creating Android apps to use them with my smartphone
But then i discovered home assistant, it's a very nice piece of software that automates a lot of stuff. I really like the app and the ability to set automations.
I'm still making a few boards for my use with the specific features that i need but they'll be compatible with home assistant

I don't think I've ever thought to myself "damn I wish my light switch could be used via my telephone"

The automations are more useful honestly
I have my outdoor lights set to turn on when its sunset time + 10 minutes.
Similarly my room lights turn on when they detect motion (that is i move) but only around the time i wake up.
When that motion is detected it also sends a WoL packet to me computer, making it boot up and be ready for me

I see some benefits with smart homes. For example you could preprogram your lights and TV and make it look like someone is home when you are somewhere else, or autodial emergency services if your cameras and motion sensors detect another person at home when you are outside (or sleeping).
Of course I wouldn't connect my smart home hub to the internet, at least not directly. Maybe if it's behind Wireguard.

I personally use zerotier to access my home network whenever I'm out. It works really well. Not sure if it's safe or not

It's pretty great. I use it for various things around the house, but the most elaborate would be either keeping the lizard alive or controlling my home theater.
