Is there any way left to get Monero in Europe? Because of KYC laws, all exchanges have dropped the currency (to my knowledge). I only want 1 or 2 because of FOMO, but now I'm mining my own and thinking about shelling out a grand for a rig...

>>89674 Maybe you can get other crypto using KYC and then somehow convert to Monero without leaving a trace of your destination Monero wallet?
Nobody special · 2025-11-14 05:49
>>89674 See > >>89676 Plenty of no-KYC exchanges will trade monero for other coins. Just buy USD* or BTC, then non-KYC swap for monero. Also check this list to see if any fiat->monero swappers exist near you: https://kycnot.me/?currency-mode=or&currencies=xmr&currencies=fiat Seems like a few true fiat->crypto no KYC exchanges still exist that don't give a fuarrrk. Haven't tried any myself so let us know how it goes please.

>VPN router >minimal distro eggs : void or alpine >torsocks for every software that require internet >not running anything outside the package manager >Librebooted but modern laptop Is this schizo enough to avoid glowie aids? What about flatpak? Kinda relying on the router here but might have to look into using wireguard with iptables rules when i connect outside, i am trusting tor even less with all the arrests of node operators. My threat model is paranoia and wanting to own my computer.

Which SSD brands have the least firmware bullshit to deal with? Did Samsung and Sandisk really ship with firmware that killed the drives in a few months? Do any brands not require a Windows-only spyware app to install firmware updates?

>>89701 >Which SSD brands have the least firmware bullshit to deal with? pick any >Did Samsung and Sandisk really ship with firmware that killed the drives in a few months? idk >Do any brands not require a Windows-only spyware app to install firmware updates? intel? it doesn't matter. why updating firmware for a fuarrrking disk. all it does is write data, it doesn't need any firmware.
Chani · 2025-11-15 09:41
>>89701 >Which SSD brands have the least firmware bullshit to deal with? All of them have updatable firmware nowadays. So all brands have pretty much the same level of bs. I would rather get a HDD because their firmware is not updatable by the end-user (I think?). The UEFI firmware can be used to backdoor devices, so I would guess that the same threat applies to SSD disks as well. >Did Samsung and Sandisk really ship with firmware that killed the drives in a few months? Yes, certain models would die if you didn't update the firmware almost immediately. I recommend Samsung, Kingston or Crucial but I think they all require M$ Windows for updating the firmware. Sadly, I'm not aware of any SSD manufacturer who has firmware update tools that run on Linux. >>89691 >VPN router VPN router is good but only if you can trust the VPN provider, since they can just log everything. You could alternatively use QubesOS and route everything through Tor VM but the downsides are that you need more RAM (for multiple VMs), you need to learn the QubesOS workflow (relatively easy) and you need to be able to trust Xen. >torsocks for every software that require internet Some programs don't work well with it. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Tor#Torsocks You may need to add it as proxy instead. >not running anything outside the package manager 3rd-party repos are usually bad. I would rather use Distrobox or Guix. >What about flatpak? It's not a true sandbox (just like snapd), see https://flatkill.org I suggest Podman.
Wintermute · 2025-11-15 11:14
So, if I'm getting it right, Tor has all the infrastructure it needs to be like I2P. >you can connect to tor through snowflake proxies >you can also host snowflake proxies on your computer (browser extension, docker container) and it's very easy to set up What if you did both? You are both routing other's traffic as well as your own through snowflake proxies. This sounds a lot like I2P, except your role is restricted to an entry node only.

Encrypted firmware files like these: exe.img.sec, exe.img.sec.vs, exe.img.sec.cs, exe.img.sec.cmac. CS and VS both contain 256 random hex digits. CMAC is 132 seemingly random bytes. SEC is "openssl enc'd data with salted password" according to the file util. RSA-1024 maybe? Am I completely hopeless here wanting to crack it?

I wanted to install coreboot but the macronix mx25l6406e bios chip in my x220 just seems unresponsive. I tried reading it using raspberrypi with flashrom and a t48 programmer with both minipro software and its proprietary windows software. Each time I got the same checksum mismatch error, expected 0xC22017, got 0xFFFFFF (unknown). There are no connection issues, because the same setup works with other laptops, namely t420 and asus x540l, though they both use winbond chips. My x220 boots up normally, so the macronix chip is not broken. Should I desolder the chip and then try to read it?

>>89703 Guix runs as fuarrrking root 24/7, if you trust something that gets updates once in a blue moon to have full control over your whole system then you don't deserve a computer Also, there's no 3rd party repo for Guix because anyone is able to add a package to Guix, retard. If devs can't add simple abstraction layers like PoLP then it's not worth using. >distrobox You quote the archwiki but didn't even bother to look at the one for distrobox From https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Distrobox#Security_implications >The main goal of Distrobox is not focused on sandboxing the containers from the host. Due to the tight integration nature of the project, complete isolation is not possible as containers running inside Distrobox will have full access to your home folder and application directories. And they're just being nice, containerization has nothing to do with security, ABSOLUTELY nothing. If anything, even with containerization it's downright harmful to mix the repos of 20 distributions with one. >podman Exact same thing as distrobox >>89691 Buy a thinkpad x230 and install heads. Write protect the flash chip. Put nail polish on the screws and take high resolution pictures to ensure signs of tampering. Do NOT use a HDD or SSD. They have DMA so a malicious firmware could do a lot of damage, use of USB is preferred since they do not have DMA. Completely remove the microphone, sound card, webcam and the WWAN card from the laptop. Remove the fan to prevent binary acoustic data transmission. Replace the default wifi card with a supported atheros card. Disable wifi when not in use, preferably by physically removing the card. Make your own independent Linux distro from scratch. Most Linux distros value convenience over security and will thus never have good security. Your only option is to make your own. Use musl instead of glibc, Libressl instead of openssl, sinit instead of systemd, oksh instead of bash, toybox instead of gnu coreutils to reduce attack surface. Enable as little kernel modules as possible. Use a hardened memory allocator. Apply strong SELinux and sandboxing policies. Restrict the root account heavily to make sure it never gets compromised. Disable JavaScript and CSS in your browser. Block all FAGMAN domains in your hosts file. Monitor all network requests. Do not use a phone. Never speak near anyone who owns a phone, they are always listening. Never use any non-corebooted technology made after 2006. Never leave your devices unattended. Tape triple layer aluminum foil all around your room as tempest shielding. Type really quietly as defense against audio keylogging. Use ecc ram to minimize rowhammer and rambleed. Encrypt everything multiple times with various different encryption implementations. Compile everything from source. Use hardened compilation flags. Always read through the source before installing something if possible. Only use the internet when absolutely necessary.

My phone broke over the weekend. It was a Pixel 5 running GrapheneOS, for however much good that did me looking back over its lifetime. I had it for three of four years, but I dropped the thing one time too many and it completely gave out. Now I need to find something new. Unfortunately I need to be able to call and text at the bare minimum; I'm a university student and need to be reachable, and that's setting aside the modern overreliance on SMS authentication and the like. I've been thinking about downgrading myself to a flip phone (whether that already ambiguous distinction would further fall under the category of "dumbphone" or "feature phone" I'm not sure). I really admire the aesthetics of those Japanese Keitai phones, but they've unfortunately been co-opted by the unstoppable hauntological force that is my generation's obsession with aping elements of the past whose underlying appeal they don't actually understand. Still, I want something that flips out to be as long as possible (and is ideally thin enough that doesn't look stupid). I don't want an ugly little screen on the backside of the top half, either, telling me the time or my battery percentage or some soykaf. If I need that information I can get it myself by flipping the damn phone open. As functionality goes, calling and texting is really it. I need something that would work in the continental United States, which I think means of 4G LTE connectivity or better, but if plain old 4G could work under some particular carrier I have no real qualms about switching, provided it's the best option given the criteria I've laid out here. An SD slot would be nice to have, but it's not strictly necessary. I would say the same of a full keyboard (it would make texting a lot easier, but I recognize that it could be unduly restrictive). My biggest issue is probably mapping. I have no sense of direction whatsoever; I could (and have) gotten lost traveling in a circle, straight line, and probably without moving at all, though in that case likely while I was tripping on something. Anyway, opinions on whether GPS/location services require biting the Internet connectivity/mobile OS/digital capability/potential to open a web browser or run an app bullet are also greatly appreciated. If they do, so be it. If not, does anyone know of a good standalone device I could use for navigation? Consider any solid MP3 player, or music player more generally, recommendations equally solicited--though I've been told the Creative MuVo is nonpareil, so it's a much less urgent issue than: What phone would be best for me, given my preferences? (Which I'm eager to further elaborate upon). Is navigation DOA? Do I have any recourse? Where on the dumb-smart spectrum should I fall here (preferably as close to the former endpoint as I can)? Thank you for your help! I wouldn't know anywhere else to ask this, though with the Internet in its current state, that's probably less a compliment than the fact that I wouldn't trust anywhere else to produce any valuable insight into this problem even if I would consider bringing my questions to them at all. Let's all love Lain :)

With the Australian government implementing the new 'under 16s' social media ban which impacts every single person accessing the internet from Australia, requiring ID verification to even use google search etc, what is the bestest way to avoid any and all of it? Other than using third party vpn services or tor which is a given anyway. Have considered renting a vps in another country to run a vpn server as a more semi-permanent and reliable solution.
Sabo Engle · 2025-11-21 08:41
>>89786 This is more of a /sec/ question but set up anonymized DNS crypt and see if that works. BlahDNS has a couple of servers with a lot of good features >Have considered renting a vps in another country to run a vpn server as a more semi-permanent and reliable solution This isn't a more reliable solution at all. Having a one-server "VPN" (which is pretty much a proxy by that point) is just waiting for the connection to get reported and taken down. For the price and effort of setting up and obfuscating even one VPS you might as well pay 100 bucks a year to an existing VPN with multihop connections, all the proxies you want, and OBFS4/v2ray all ready to go. It really isn't worth doing yourself, I did for a few years because I wanted to be different and lost a bunch of money in the process.

>>89788 > Having a one-server "VPN" (which is pretty much a proxy by that point) is just waiting for the connection to get reported and taken down. Who is gonna report it and why, who is gonna take it down? As far as I'm aware, using proxies or VPNs is not against Australian law at the moment. Some sites might block some VPNs on their side, that's just their preference and not something law requires. And they usually use publicly available IP ranges lists, which means popular VPN providers will be derezzed while DIY VPN hosted on a VPS not, unless you do something to get IP ban on certain website yourself.
Project 2501 · 2025-11-21 18:03
>>89793 >Who is gonna report it and why Copyright trolls, copyright reasons. Or literally anyone looking at the traffic coming out the VPS and any reason they can think of to pick on you in particular. Your provider, but only after forking over all your information >As far as I'm aware, using proxies or VPNs is not against Australian law at the moment Do you really want to wait around until that happens? >which means popular VPN providers will be derezzed while DIY VPN hosted on a VPS not, unless you do something to get IP ban on certain website yourself Several websites ban simply because your IP came from a hosting provider. If you find a loophole and it gets closed then you're fuarrrked for options. I'd say buy a pack of residential proxies if you're looking to ban evade, but as YTCracker says: "Proxies are like condoms use them once then switch up on 'em" Did you try the DNSCrypt thing yet? How did that go?

>>89808 I personally just stick with MacOS on my M1 Air, I only use it to watch videos while resting on a comfy sofa. That's also the reason I would only ever buy the smallest screen ones. I'm not planning to do anything with it for as long as it keeps working. If it goes broken one day I would see if there are cheaper laptops of similar build and formfactor with passive cooling, if no maybe buy a newer Air. Or maybe consider a tablet. Desktop laptop is where I would really be worried to choose proper thing. My next pick in this category would be the biggest screen I can get, because I'd still like more space even after turning off window decorations and making taskbar auto-hide, and passive cooling would never be viable since I want it to be capable of running local models. Regarding Linux I guess the only big concern for me is to pick AMD GPU over Nvidia. But I'm using RTX pretty fine rn, the issues with it were minimal so far.

It was a good wake up call for those who didn't realize yet that any commit that doesn't make money for Redhat or Google doesn't get merged into the kernel. If I were you I'd rather get one of those latest generation AMD laptops instead. I discovered that I absolutely fell in love with it. Often times, my professors require me to take pictures of my written homework and submit it. However, the process of scanning my homework often takes about an hour, and it sometimes comes out illegible, and I'll have to re-write parts of it and scan it. However, with the iPad, this saves a considerable amount of time. I am simply able to draw in my homework and submit it. Likewise, I am able to paste in images and tables which makes certain assignments a breeze. I looked into Samsung tablets, but they're all jewgle, and they require me to make a gmail account which requires a phone number. However, I do not believe the iPad requires a phone number. I know that LineageOS is available for some Samsung tablets, but I am unsure of it given some of the security risks, and especially since I will be signing into school services where sensitive information is. I also like this more than the laptop I have since it is so small. It is also able to do everything else I want on it, too. It would also cut down on paper waste and make it easier to organize my work. I always keep my past assignments to review since a lot of the STEM stuff I am working on is cumulative. However, the papers I save take up space in my bedroom. Having all of my work digitally would make that no longer an issue. I have been using paper for all of my assignments during my time in college, and I have discovered that this is truly a game changer.

I got my parents old compaq presario sr5130nx. It doesn't turn on - I'd have to buy a new psu. I was going to maybe upgrade it a little and make a NAS or just play simple itch.io games on it. Do you think it's worth tinkering with or should I just donate it? Any suggestions on what to do with it? I'm new to computer repair and building.
Anamika · 2025-11-27 18:53
>>89858 Other lainons have already mentioned PostmarketOS in this thread. Have you looked into it at all? IMO if you mitigate your usage of it and keep it as a college device it's a good compromise. Just promise yourself if you start using it for dumb crap like doomscrolling or if you start wasting so much time it outweights its benefits you'll get rid of it. >>89859 Where would you donate it? Unless it's going to someone who likes to tinker with computers I'd look into scrapping it for a couple bucks just so it doesn't end up in the trash given how normal people don't tend to use hardware that old. I would use it for a NAS just for the experience of it. Maybe use it as a router with pfsense and an ethernet expansion card.

>>89858 If you want an ipad and can get it without a financial burden, then go for it. I would, though, ask you to reconsider your attitude towards paper. Writing and keeping all clean and organized is not only an important thing to build character, but actually helps you learn the material better. I'm talking from both my personal experience as a student and my teaching practice, but AFAIR you can also find studies on the topic proving the point.
Cereal Killer · 2025-11-28 06:43
>>89858 I prefer physical paper, because I find I retain information better that way. Ipads and other tablet-things can be useful for the purpose you mention. My advice is twofold: - before you buy, ask EVERY family member and friend you know if they have one they will sell. tons of people have one lying around that they bought for "hype" and never use and will give you for free if you ask nicely - if you can't find one of those, please buy a cheap used one paying 10$ for an ipad is alright paying new price is very sad

>>89860 I've decided to keep the compaq. I bought a new psu. Do any lains have suggestions for learning about computer hardware parts generally? More specifically, I want to learn how to determine when a PCs ram, processor, graphics card, etc is adequate and when I should upgrade.
Neuromancer · 2025-11-28 17:09
>>89872 >learn when a PCs components are adequate and when to upgrade When I'm building a PC for someone or helping them choose one I always ask them to find their most intense programs, usually either by going to steam's hardware recommendations for their games or the equivalent for their chosen program's like davinci resolve. Then I do a bit of research on what's a little better than their recommendation and build around that. Basically it depends on your workload. I would just throw a basic linux ISO on your compaq and find some benchmark software. After that just use it idly for web browsing and some more intensive tasks like see what the most recent console it can emulate is. Did you re-paste the CPU? Side question to lainons do you still consider 8GB of RAM enough to do your everyday tasks?
The Fin · 2025-11-28 20:18
>>89880 Thanks lain! Your answer makes sense. If I keep this as a simple browsing/linux OS tester, probably the most intensive program I will use is gimp. So I'll work around that. I have not re-pasted the cpu... did not know that was a thing I had to do. But I'm looking that up now! So much to learn!!!

>>89860 I have not looked into PostmarketOS, but I'll check it out. Do you have any specific recommended tablet models? I have no interest in doing anything entertainment related on the iPad other than perhaps watch movies. Generally, I keep my hardware for my school/work life and personal life compartmentalized, so there should be no issues with doomscrolling or consuming. >>89863 I am aware of both of these items. I know that writing things down on paper is better, scientifically, for retention compared to typing it down. How does the iPad factor into something like this, since it is kind of like writing on a surface? I have no issues with penmanship or organizing myself -- the issue is sheerly getting the paper onto the computer to be submitted. It would be one thing if I were directly turning the paper into the professor (In my entire time in college, I had only one professor that did that.) >>89869 I asked quite a few family members and even asked people at university. I saw no used iPad floating around. I asked a family member about it, and they said that they did not recommend used iPads because the battery life got worse along with some other things. They maybe only recommended a generation back. (They are not the consumerist type and prefer to buy most things used when possible to save money.) I did look online for used prices, but it seemed that there was not a significant difference in price. As of Black Friday, 274$ does not seem too bad for the cheapest model new.
Junichi Fujiwara · 2025-11-28 21:26
>>89883 https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices This has a list of all tablets PostmarketOS works with. I'm linking it because I don't have any specific recommendations. Anything I need to do can be done via a laptop save for taking photos which even then sometimes I just use a cheap 1080p USB webcam for. I would make a list of what I want a tablet for that anything can do and then a second list of things I could do specifically wtih an iPad assuming they have some quality of life things or things specific to apple products like an app your school uses. It sounds like you just want to use a touchscreen for notes and pasting images but idk if that's it. You might want to grab a thinkpad x200T or x230T and put linux on it. Those are touchscreen laptops where the screen rotates 180 degrees and lays over the keyboard so it can be a tablet. It's chunky but you have the secondhand market in case you need a part down the line and the easy resale value if you get tired of it because it's a thinkpad. It looks like the x230t is compatible with coreboot as well if that's up your alley. You could also shove a mini pci-e to sd card adapter in this thing and use it for a spare NAS. store commonly used files on the SSD and rarely needed files on the sd card(s). I use a dual microSD to mini pci-e adapter for music and haven't ran into issues after doing that for a few years. The versatility of a laptop over a tablet is a lot better.

>>89885 Here is what I want >draw and write in color >copy and paste images easy >possible uni app integration to submit assignments easily >built-in document scanning >a way to quickly share files with other students. I took a look at some of the more recent tablets on PostMarketOS's page, but none of them really struck a cord with me. I looked up the used prices of some of the more recent devices that interested me, and they were not that significantly far from the iPad's cost. I tried looking up the x200t and x230t, but it didn't look like there were any options, at all, on Ebay. The single options I saw were 300$+. Also, don't older-style like ThinkPads like that have meme-tax nowadays thanks to jewtubers like Luke Smith memeing the soykaf out of them? I recall they were good and affordable options years ago. Then, after they got popular, it seems like their price skyrocketed.
Anamika · 2025-11-29 06:14
>>89887 I guess it's just a bad time for those models secondhand right now I got one a couple years ago for I wanna say ~$140 and after a bit over a year replaced the motherboard for another $30-50. There's a few old options like the x41 but I wouldn't trust anything that needs a 32 bit OS to have app integration assuming your uni doesn't have web versions of what you're looking for. Do you need a document scanned or just a photo of it cropped to look nice? That seems to be the hiccup in finding an easy solution from a few quick searches. I don't know of any good linux programs that scan a document from a photo off-hand. Otherwise I could recommend laptops from the early 2000's and you would just put something basic like tiny core or any random 32 bit OS you could gut the default DE out of and replace with something lightweight like DWM or plasma. I think if you have to go the iPad route it's not a bad choice considering how you treat your devices. I'll agree with your earlier post about older models having issues because Apple has been caught purposefully slowing down older models to create incentives for people to upgrade.

It crashes a lot, however, when the document gets too big. The rest of the scanner options are on the jewgle playstore which I refuse to use. What kind of GNU/Linux note-taking software, intended for writing (as in stylus-use) use, would be available that works on 32-bit?

Likewise, are batteries for these machines even available that can still hold a charge? Or will I have to use it by power? I am looking up battery prices since a lot of these machines on eBay are missing batteries, and they look to be damn near the cost of the machine itself. When I tried to factor in the cost of the machine and the components, it starts to add up. Also, are 32-bit machines even able to connect to the internet? Are there security risks for choosing to use a 32-bit machine in 2025? The only option I saw where I wouldn't have to buy a significant amount of components or that was not "for parts" didn't even ship to the US.

Do a portion of it daily, even if 15 minutes, no skipping unless some real emergency. 4. Complete the course, draft a new idea, which is kinda the same, but somewhat more fun for you. 5. Start making it daily, use only documentation and forums for troubleshooting. Don't ever open the course you've completed, that would make for a bad habit. 6. Finish the idea. You should be able to show that result to a stranger and he should be able to understand what it is without explanation. That means it's somewhat complete. This should take you at least a month, probably two. By the time you've been programming daily for quite a while. You might take a small break and think it out. If you feel like it's more of a chore, than you should probably find something other than programming. It's not worth it. If you enjoy it to a degree, you should keep on going. You might want to change the project at this point (not earlier) and either repeat the process or go straight to the DIY part. Or just make something bigger and better. Repeat until you know what you really want.

I tried to look for the data folder in the Android folder to see if I could just find the offending corrupted note file to delete if it is it's own file or otherwise modify if it is a single file but do not see the app data folder location which I am not sure where it was stored to begin with. I tried updating the app and that did not change anything. I had a few important notes there. How likely is it my notes are fine or easily recoverable? I constantly am shadow derezzed then full derezzed from github whenever I try to make an account so I can not even report this to the developers to ask them.

>>90408 >what the hell is Rust? By itself Rust is an interesting attempt at guard railing reference handling, theoretically benefiting work with complex structures or multiple developers working on the same systems code, eliminating most NPEs. It's got many ways to do the same thing and especially aspies really seem to like it due to the way it's structured. In practice however it struggles with long compile times, sometimes the use of "unsafe" is needed if you want to do any crazy pointer magic which defeats the whole purpose of the borrow checker. And some people seem to believe that simply using Rust will make the code resilient to all bugs. But my greatest annoyance is how it's shoehorned everywhere. And it looks like just a good excuse to take authorship away from battle tested c code written by predominantly white men by gender confused activists. Possibly even a ploy by tech giants to enshitify the FOSS space. But then again didn't some guy on linkedin whose name sounds like gayland (you really can't make this soykaf up) say they wanted to replace all their windows code with Rust? In that case it might just be a cargo cult (lel). In short, promising tool but surrounded by tons of drama which is why any discussion about it will sadly but inevitably be a dumpster fire. >>90417 >duckduckstartpageecosias "rust" >it's the process of steel decaying by process of oxidation >intredesting >>90440 Thoughts on xlibre?

I need to save something that I CAN NOT HAVE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ON MY COMPUTER, but on what sites should I store it? My prerequisites are: 1. Must be able to post the file through Tor 2. Must be able to upload 6mb of data 3. Must be retrievable through a network downloader (preferably curl) while proxying through Tor 4. Must be on multiple sites (preferably at least 3) that aren't likely to all take down my file within a week. 5. Really preferable for the sites to not have any mandatory Javascript or signups for when I upload the file, if they require signups then they MUST allow me to signup via a "shady" e-mail, for example cock.li. Javascript or signups just for downloading it are forbidden. The file is going to be encrypted so if you think that it'll get taken down because of how shady that looks then please don't link it. The file is not vital for my security nor illegal, I'm only adding encryption as a safety measure. Thank you in advance. If you want to do me a big favor, I can send you my PGP so I can send you the encrypted file for you to post on a social media with a lot of traffic e.g Mastodon so it'll get buried down in all of the noise. Or perhaps a git repo that I can safely clone.

>>90699 >my problem is i get stuck with the logic and confused and lost when writing larger programs With "logic of larger programs", do actually you mean the architecture? How to go from a single-file-single-function fizzbuzz-project into something with actual structure and complexity? How to sanely organize the bits and pieces that actually do stuff, and to get them communicating in some coherent way? The industry doesn't know either, and keeps coming up with misguided paradigms. But they are absolutely worth a study. Look into object oriented programming (ignoring inheritance and a lot of other bullcrap), learn some design patterns, and consider some teachings of functional programming (no side effects and such). The architecting style I and many other skilled engineers have found the most effective is some weird amalgamation of this (which perhaps boils down to just modular data-driven programming - more buzzwords for you to do homework on). How this often looks like in practice in C is that each header file defines one "object" struct and the function prototypes that operate on that struct. There's really a million ways to structure any project, and when I was new I used to get decision paralysis over this. Well, turns out, even the most skilled engineer often doesn't know. Instead he just writes the thing, however messy at first, and just starts refactoring it into something sane and maintainable as the suitable architecture becomes clear. But this is probably only relevant to you after you get good enough comprehending the messes you create, which just takes practice as the other anon said.

>>90718 I am really new to actually programming my own computer. So it could very well be that I am not doing some basic steps to be expected of someone programming their own computer. For instance, you asked if added a netwerk device, but I don’t think I instructed the VM to have one, considering the command string I used. This is the command string I used to build the VM # virt-install --name=winxp-vm --vcpus=1 --memory=1024 –cdrom=/home/user/iso/winxp.iso --disk size=5 –os-variant=winxp I didn’t add one, did I? It doesn’t matter if the VM is off-line, because I just want to use to play some old video games. I found the instructions for building the VM here https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-create-and-manage-kvm-virtual-machines-from-cli (On the website there’s a ‘\’ between each specific instruction, but that didn’t work for some reason. After removing the \ between each specific instruction it did work) What I am expecting to happen when I run the ‘virsh start’ command, is a new screen to open with the VM running in it. Instead the only thing I see in the terminal is ‘winxp-vm started’ -- Perhaps this is important, but after running the VM for the first time, I accidentily closed the terminal screen (in which I entered those lines above) and didn’t save the VM. I don’t know if that could be the explanation for it. Also, since I didn’t do anything noteworthy in the VM, it’s no problem to build a new one.

I am trying to perform a search for a hyphenated phrase (e.g., just-a-friend) where the hyphen is treated as a literal character, rather than a word separator. However the search engines I tried this in (DDG, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Brave) are consistently returning results for just_a_friend and just a friend. I used "just-a-friend" in quotation marks to force an exact match but the hyphen was still treated as a space. Tried +"just-a-friend" on Bing specifically, no change in behavior. I tried inurl:"just-a-friend", then intext:"just-a-friend" and then both together, no changes in behavior. I tried "just-a-friend" -just_a_friend, no changes in behavior. I tried "just-a-friend" -just -a -friend, no results popped up at all. I tried to find a solution to my problem online and even asked an AI for guidance, my results were unfruitful. Is there specific syntax, a specialized search engine (SymbolHound didn't ignore special characters, but it's now obsolete) or another to force a search engine to treat the hyphen as a required character and exclude results containing spaces or underscores in place of the hyphen?

Batou · 2026-02-10 21:35
>>91079 It depends on how likely the files you are downloading are to get you in trouble. Without a VPN, anyone can see your IP in relation with the files you download, and law enforcement can trivially find your home address from an IP and a timestamp. If you think torrenting on a bare IP is too dangerous (I personally wouldn't worry about copyright infringement for only a few files), you can use i2p that is meant for this exact usecase, or Tor. Not all torrents are accessible on i2p, but you can ask on irc or postman. People will tell you not to torrent on Tor because muh strain on the network, but it's ok if you don't seed.

I'm building a program, and one feature requires basic image recognition - if someone uploads an image, I want to be able to get a simple summary of it - "A cat jumping at a bird", "a female pornography model", "a book on a desk", that level of basic is enough. The problem is that this must be able to run on a super cheap server: no GPU, preferably under 1GB RAM, low storage space (preferably less than a couple of GB, but can go higher if necessary). Any recommendations?

Hi, I hope all of you are doing great! My question is: How can I become an 'above average' user of Linux/Unix-like systems? In the sense of being able to do more than just rudimentary stuff like writing trivial commands or updating my system packages. I'm aware that knowing Bash is a must, but I don't know if AWK is also an important tool for doing complex things. I was thinking about reading the Linux From Scratch book, but I don't know if it is way too advanced. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not an expert either. I'd say my level is 'mediocre.' Because I don't like to receive without giving something in return, I leave a couple of resources that may be interesting: https://www.yolinux.com/ https://tldp.org/LDP/tlk/tlk.html (an online book on how the Linux kernel works internally) That and some ugly drawing I made, ha, ha. I got a Chinese soykafbook and want to know what distro I should put on it. I'm thinking Debian or Fedora. What is the Linux world looking like in 2026? I made the mistake of purchasing an MBP so I've been on macOS for a couple of years and I'm making the switch back. Is Debian 13 good? I've heard good things about the upcoming Fedora 44 release. Taking recommendations beyond just those two. The only caveat is that I value my time and I'm not particularly fond of Arch. If anyone is curious, the soykafbook in question is a CHUWI FreeBook. It has and Intel Twin Lake N150, 16GB LPDDR5, a 512 GB PCIe SSD, and 2K display. Why did I get it over a used ThinkPad? >>91894 Yo u missing the point dawg let me explain. Regular browsing requires javscript, not talking about this site and real sites know how to make their site work with html and css. I'm talking about the normal web. Most people say to use "browser profiles" or browser compartmentalization. The problem is all browsers share the same clientrect per device. Firefox -> Mullvad Browser -> Librewolf -> Tor Browser = Same ClientRect Brave -> Chromium -> Vivaldi -> Microsoft Edge = Same ClientRect So you have linux xyz installed and your using Librewolf then you use Tails on same device or external drive with TBB installed and you have same fingerprint since its the same device. I can't vouch for them yet but unless you are using VM's or a device computer for isolated tasks then you have already been got by CDN's like cloudflare that fingerprint you. The project that seems to propose something that seems like a vialble solution is HydraVeil which using bwrap to spoof each browser isolated namespace to give a unique fingerprint to each alias/activity. https://simplifiedprivacy.com/vpn-browser-tutorial/easy-to-use.html

I need to replace my smartphone. Unfortunately, I can’t quit using them because of work. Ideally, I want a smartphone that can run an OS that’s FOSS, secure, and respects privacy. What OS should I be looking for and do they only work on certain models of smartphone?

You can make multiple profiles, each with their own settings, proxies, etc. For instance, you can create a personal profile and a work profile on the same device and notifications for any profiles running in the background will be forwarded to the active profile.

What are the risks of using someone else's Mullvad account code? I've got a friend, and I told 'em I didn't use VPN's because I didn't have any cryptocurrency, and they offered to let me use their account code if I needed it.
Nameless · 2026-05-13 21:37
>>92013 It's no risk to either of you, it's just a randomly generated account number that's not tied to anything* so the only risk is that you can use (or even pay for) their VPN service. * With theoretical exception of 1) payment info and 2) friend's activity potentially being associated with you. For realistic outlook, see Mullvad's policy documents; respectively, the Privacy Policy and "How we handle government requests for user data" tl;dr it's not risky, it's also :5bux:, git gud Also, I would generally (in all other cases) and categorically never recommend that anyone use a "free VPN"; however, ProtonVPN offers a free one now (new to me at least). Country selection is limited, and also you can't so much select one as you can try to land on the one you want. Abuse free VPN as follows until exiting via desired country: 1. Connect 2. Click "change server" button 3. In settings, toggle Protocol between OpenVPN and Wireguard 4. goto 3

What is the best general way of learning a linux command? Reading the man page? tldr? Do you just look it up and paste it and forget? Do you set aliases for certain very specific commands? Do you make notes on how to use them?

>>92036 >best general way? asking for the impossible, depends on too many factors e.g. complexity, frequency, "ease of search", and accessibility >man page? just one of many possible sources for learning there's not one definitive best source for all cases sometimes the best option is to just read the source code >notes? write notes for specific use cases (e.g. for a project), not for the tool itself

How fuarrrked am I? I was trying to to view a PDF from a questionable source without actually downloading it. Really, I should've just made a new VM to open this file, but I was feeling lazy today because I'm tired. I tried to archive the PDF using a couple of websites, but it wouldn't go through for some reason. I was trying to get the direct link to the PDF so I could use an external source to extract the content of it. I know I ran the embedded file link through VirusTotal, and there were no hits. I was trying to view the direct link to the PDF, but I couldn't find it through the Network Monitor in Firefox because it was hidden behind DDOS protection. I think I was trying to do something like curl -I -H with the cookie I had from loading the main website (not the file) in my browser. But I wasn't able to get the direct link that way. Because I have automatic file saving disabled, I tried to hit the button so it would prompt to download, and I looked at the location, but it was just the main name of the website. Eventually, I created a new read-only folder and let Firefox prompt the download location and saved the file to that folder so the download would fail just so I could see where the link itself was downloading from. Absolutely nothing showed up in the Network Monitor, at all, and there were no traces of a failed download. This didn't happen for all files, because I just tried saving some basic webpages to that folder, and it clearly showed that the download failed, saving nothing in the process. I was able to get direct download links for those test downloads. Next, I decided to create a separate browser profile and try something new: I disabled the disk cache and memory cache and disabled service workers. I made sure to disable automatic downloads, but I don't think I looked carefully enough or got one of the settings mixed up here. I went to do the intentionally failed download again, but instead of prompting me for the location at all, it just automatically downloaded and opened the file in the Firefox PDF viewer. Quickly, I shut the tab, deleted the file, and deleted the separate profile. There are no strange processes, unusual outbound connections, new executable files that shouldn't be there, new files in home that shouldn't be there, new changes to shell configs, or new scheduled tasks. The safest bet would be to re-install, but it would be a giant pain in the ass. The schizo part of me wants to smash all of my hardware with a sledgehammer and take apart every electronic in my house with a screwdriver just to look for signs it has been tapped, and I feel paranoid trains of thoughts coming back that I haven't had in years - just a phantom feeling like someone's watching me, thinking about what they would be saying about my activities, as if it were narration.

Hold on, so... it was some document file? Reinstall this soykaf if you really feel trainful of thoughts, or even more radical, remove the hard disk drive away, grab a blank hard drive to install the new OS to "justify" the reinstallation. I wonder if you're simply a young chap so you don't understand the concept of them being too busy to handle little busters being little busters all over interwebz-9000 every time any of them downloads some 1945 schematic, though.
