Tor-Friendly non-Javascript Search Engines

Terzibashjian · 2025-11-13 06:56
I want to start a thread where users can share Tor-friendly non-Javascript search engine urls, because it seems they're becoming increasingly harder to come by these days, and sometimes it's just faster on old hardware to use lower-end browsers as opposed to the Tor-Browser Bundle. I'm experimenting with non-standard web browsers like dillo and links2, using the basic Tor localhost:9050 socks4A (for links2) or the http proxy (for dillo). Concerning dillo, the proxy doesn't work. I've tried both setting it as an environment variable, and in the config file. I'm unsure why, but it throws a DNS error. At the moment, setting up the socks4a proxy in links2 seems to work fine, and setting up a proxychain to the active Tor port works well with the emacs web browser (EWW), using proxychains4, but a common problem among all of these non-Javascript browsers is that common search engines require Javascript these days, and now even DuckDuckGo's Lite page, in addition to their onion urls no longer seem to work with any of these alternative browser solutions. Do any lainons know of non-Javascript search pages that still work through Tor-proxied non-Javascript browsers ? For reference, even SwissCows no longer works. (Semi-related note: God I miss nanochan. Those guys actually knew about this soykaf, and I could post on there using these hacky web browsing solutions. I had to deanonymize myself to post here because Lainchan's soykafty spam filter thinks anyone using links2 through Tor is a bot).

I'm not testing it on your meme browsers, not even wasting my diskspace with them. >nanochan >Those guys actually knew about this soykaf All that nanotrannies did was larp with their obscure browsers and make soykafty threads on proof of concepts, anybody who lurked there for more than 2 months can realize this.

>>89669 >All that nanotrannies did was larp with their obscure browsers and make soykafty threads on proof of concepts, anybody who lurked there for more than 2 months can realize this. On the contrary, I browsed nanochan for over a year and their technology board demonstrated much greater and esoteric know-how than anything I've seen on lainchan in the past three years, and it surpassed the cyberpunk boards on 8kun. I've been browsing lainchan since 2020 and tbqh, the quality of deep-dive type schizo knowhow has declined IMO. It has a higher share of tourists these days, with passing surface level flits of fancy than dedicated turbonerds. Ik lainchan has always had more of a reputation for being full of anime obsessed tech illiterate baby duck LARPers, but it really only seemed to earn that rep in the past three years. Any imageboard is full of soykafposts, but I honestly think your read on nanochan's tech board isn't too unreasonable. There was a fair share of mystification around spoofing user-agents, but what I did appreciate was the greater degree of experimentation that the users seemed to have. There were more "code" formatted config file pastes, for example. A small thing, but ultimately it felt more transparent and a little more transgressive; as if one had a higher chance of stumbling there across what could be a new, subtle hack around the complex digital panopticon we live in. I'll concede that maybe nanochan exhibited aspects of "a broken clock is right twice a day", and that your criticisms have some merit, but I remember it having a certain transgressive board culture that can really be said to have had some intellectual value. >https://duckduckgogg42xjoc72x3sjasowoarfbgcmvfimaftt6twagswzczad.onion/ It only works for the Tor browser bundle in my experience, and no longer for tor-routed non-javascript browsers, which is the point of this thread, but I can't be mad at you for contributing. (I thought searx instances used javascript last I remembered ?) >startpagel6srwcjlue4zgq3zevrujfaow726kjytqbbjyrswwmjzcqd.onion Your Startpage link works great, thanks.
