Greetings lainchan. This is an awareness raising post from the 4Chan /g/ Usenet General.
Cross posting to bring to attention, reinvigorate, recruit and everything in between.
Posting on usenet is free, easy and is a most comfy experience.
>What is /usenet/?
Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on
(http, irc, ftp, etc). It's NOT owned by corpos, not under
govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed by all.
Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like irc, http, usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards.
Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.
>no rly WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, impossible to take down.
Today it is split between binaries and text. The binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and almost completely abandoned, until now.
>WHY POST ON USENET
Its open protocol, you can use any client you want or build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.
>THIS IS OLDER THAN MY DAD. WHY TF WOULD I DO THIS?
Because it is comfy.
Because it’s decentralized. Because instead of feeding some corpo ai bullshit like discord or whatever, you can have a conversation with like
minded anons in an uncensored, decentralized, and fun hackerman way.
>DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
No, you can use the aforementioned eternal-september.org with any client of your choice, or use the service of newsgrouper.org to access freely online (register to post)
>OK I’M IN - WHERE DO I POST!
Join us at alt.cyberpunk.tech
WHAT CLIENT SHOULD I USE?
>Pan (gnome newsreader - Multiplat)
>Seamonkey
>Gnus for GNU Emacs
>Mozilla Thunderbird
>want to take a peek?
Online Based service @ newsgrouper.org is free and allows to post when registered. Also it can be used in any browser, even on android!

so, it doesn't even have a usable, normal schizo client? bruuhh man just gimme my irc back

>open free protocol
>accessible to anyone with an internet connection
>can't access without email
>have to register and rely on the charity of a Let's Encrypt like organization to read some text
Lord Nikon · 2025-10-19 05:05
when i was into usenet i remember there being pay services and also lists of free servers you could just connect to with no charge or registration or anything. just fire up pan, go to the free server, and start reading. the free ones usually had fewer newsgroups, but if it had the ones you used no problem. you can also run your own nntp server for nothing. the binary newsgroups are loaded with books, movies, pr0n, you name it, encoded in text format. you just use a client that can decode it into binary form and it's ready to use. works great. i might check it out and see if it's a good as it used to be, i wonder if isp's still provide free access to their usenet server.
SHODAN · 2025-10-19 05:41
As if anyone in here wants to interact with 4chan g, on usenet of all places. Lmao.

Why would anyone pick usenet over mailing lists? Both of them are decentralized, but while becoming an email provider is cheap and easy, providing usenet is extremely expensive, as it requires you to download all of usenet traffic and then store it for some while, which will mandate possesion of petabytes of storage, and despite that you will still not be totally independent like you are with email, because of this I'd argue that mailing lists are actually much more decentralized. Overall, usenet reminds me of urbit, with how it makes a simple extremely convoluted, but at least with urbit you might be able to make money off of it, with usenet there seems to be no tangible benefit at all

Just use a free provider, you do not have to self host and allow binaries just to discuss

>Just use a free provider
yeah but you didn't answer what advantage it had over mailing lists

It is a supplemental, free, federated space.

When AWS goes down again, when websites are being blocked again, it will persist.
Nostalgia not intended (unless you're into that sort of thing).

Usenet is nice and all, but there are several blatant weaknesses making it make
little sense to use for a cypherpunk autist.
You can sign up to Usenet with any NNTP provider, sure. That's the point of
federated protocols. However, there are very few of those, and the commercial
ones like your ISP (if it does provide you NNTP service) definitely won't dare
letting you use their service under a pseudonym. While eternal-september.org
nominally doesn't have this problem, they do prohibit "anonymous email
providers" which depending on how they define those could include Disroot and
Riseup. With such a policy, it's also likely they prohibit using a fake name.
Or at least I couldn't find any evidence of the contrary on their FAQs and
terms of service.
Another big concern about Usenet is its moderation model. From what I
understand, newsgroups aren't stored anywhere; providers just store their
users' posts and can forward them to each other. This effectively puts all the
burden of moderation on the providers and users while the newsgroups have no
content quality standards by design. The netiquette is literally just a
suggestion, and the worst thing that can happen to you if you break it is a
handful of users filtering you which you can bypass by creating another
account. With little to no defederation efforts like on more recent federated
protocols, you'll get away with it. And just in case you think it's a
healthier moderation model in the long run, there's literally a history of
Usenet not surviving for exactly those reasons.
Last but not least, there are big explorability issues on Usenet. If you want
to know whether making an account is worth a shot, you need to lurk. Problem
is very few providers offer this service for recent articles, and on the very
few I could find, the number of posts is so small and the quality so low that
it makes me suspect they don't even show most posts.

make a googol acc that has soy nickname for a name
get a sloppy mail
use said sloppy mail
get an alias or something!
besides, IIRC, academic guys have lackluster security

I remember coming across some kind of dedicated hacking forum that required some effort to access. Maybe it was on gopher or some other alt-web protocol? If there was a topic it would have probably been something suitably critical of web standards? I didn't join. I think I found it through Stephen Watt on twitter but now I can't find it, maybe because of twitter changes to what no-account lurkers can see. It might have required an invite or application to join? Happy hunting if anyone wants to look.

Great the 4channers are ruining Usenet now. Whatever you people touch turns to dirt.

To be fair, Usenet was already ruined by proto-channers.

It's a standard protocol for accessing archives. I can read old mailing list discussion in my client of choice, with full search and everything. Meanwhile it's literally impossible to download mboxes of some of the major mailing lists I use (https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty/-/work_items/385).
I heard killfiles/scorefiles are great for dealing with idiots and/or low-quality content, but I suppose you could make them work with email too. I don't think anyone actually does this, though, and I don't use them myself.
The discoverability of usenet is also better (even if current clients squander it). You have a list of all available newsgroups, and you know how many messages are in each. You can just sort by the most active groups and go from there. I don't really know of a similar thing for mailing lists; I don't know how I'd find any mailing lists related to my general interests, as opposed to specific software that I use or such. Are you on any such lists, maybe? I'd be happy to hear some recommendations.

bro Usenet was always based on mail addresses...
Y.T · 2026-03-27 17:07
i,ve used this thing that let me browse usenet. it was pretty cool using the antique internet. I really enjoyed looking at old dead newsgroups and also bbs borads that are still up and running
Satan-Chan · 2026-06-08 10:06
So OP mentions Newsgrouper but fails to do it justice.
Newsgrouper will allow you to read with NO registration
https://newsgrouper.org
Just sign in as a guest and start reading.
Register if you ever feel like replying.
Additionally usenet used to be HUGE and has a group for nearly anything you can imagine. Most of these groups are dead.
But newsgrouper has a tool to help you find the active ones, it's guest accessible too.
But on the subject of dead groups, I've posted in a handful and got replies within a few days. Some of them triggered more discussion than the group has had since before covid.
The great irony is that many of these people were lurking, and will talk to you, but their attitude is that it's dead and buried.
One more thing to consider with the relatively low traffic:
Usenet was "popular" back when barely anyone had a computer at all, if you go back in time far enough, many of the active groups have the same throughput that people could have expected in the past and nobody was whining that it wasn't busy.
Go ahead and think of a popular mid 90s band and use google groups to view a single year of posting. Tool, Nirvana, NiN, primus ... take your pick.
You might be surprised that many of these groups would go a day or two without a single post, people still had discussions, made friends, etc. People weren't saying it was dead though. We're just spoiled and people have memories of busy groups during usenet's heydey.

What are good alternatives for animetosho? I'm downloading all NZBs that could be important, but there still is a huge portion that will get lost, and new anime won't be added either, so what is there? The animetosho dump torrent that was released is not very well indexable as you have it's all Gzip-compressed and I don't know how you would find anything in there if you were wanting to get some specific NZB, in particular when you don't know the NZB you want and just want to get a NZB for a show you want. Maybe if you set up something with the database data, but this doesn't seem practical. NZBGeek has not nearly as much anime as Animetosho had and I don't want to pay for another indexer. What indexers will you guys use in the future when animetosho goes out of service?
