Has anyone joined the front?

Despite Lainchan being technology and anime focused, I haven't heard anyone mention the 9Front operative system before. I've been hearing a lot about it. They say it's very well-polished and productive compared to Unix. Has any of you used it, or even heard of it before? If so, what's your experience? I want to start using it for day-to-day tasks but it doesn't look very suitable.

Ive used it a bit but a few years ago. It kinda works but if you need to use a lot of projects that aren't on it...be prepared to spend years porting everything over. If all you want is a little editor and stuff, then maybe its OK (but why not use plan9port?). Also I dont know why you're posting these hideous things when they have a lot of perfectly good promotional images (pics related). I guess I see they have the tranny flag up now so I guess all cool things come to an end or something.

Running it is guaranteed to piss of chuds so that's a bonus. 9front was fun from what I've read and tried but I didn't really go in depth since I knew there are no real usecases for it because of the small development team, would've been nice if it was more polished though. >They say it's very well-polished and productive compared to Unix. I beg to differ. Like the guy below me mentioned barely any apps that are a necessity for most people aren't ported to 9front, it's nice that they have emulation but from what I remember it runs on a single core and the performance is dogsoykaf even with apps that should easily run on 1 core. I also remember reading that it can't even run videos which speaks for itself. I can also remember that it had a small page with things that people are willing to pay for to be added into 9front and a big part of those were things that most people use on a day-to-day basis, I'll give some examples based on what I see is up now on https://fqa.9front.org/appendixb.html >MP4/VP9 video support $200 >Searchable PDFs in page $200 >SSH server $5 >arm64 golang + gofmt $550 On top of that, you're very lucky if you have a WLAN card that's supported by 9front. It's a very nice OS but from what I understand Plan9 (and thus its derivation) were never supposed to be consumer oriented, it was just an experiment, so knowing that it's obvious to why it's so obscure. If you've decided from my or others' posts that you don't want to use 9front then you can at least use plan9port, it has about anything that's already available by default on 9front, here's a pic of it running on a Mac OS X in case you're curious.

>>89349 thanks for the info dude. it's from analognowhere, haven't you seen him before? it's surreal and bizarre on purpose but i find it quite charming https://analognowhere.com/ i'm hoping they haven't gone too political, too, but their homepage screams otherwise

>>89350 > pp performance > can't play videos ngl that kinda is like kicking dead whales down the beach. i shall treat it as an experiment and contributing to the community instead

>>89348 >I've been hearing a lot about it. >They say it's very well-polished and productive compared to Unix. I'm sick of headasses who pretend to be into niche technology. If you want to just play around with different operating systems, go for it, but don't pretend they're "better". Unix haters hopped on a bandwagon created by others, and continue to fail to create something better than Unix. At least some put their money where their mouth is and try, but in general, people don't.

wtf even is the point of soykaf like acme its just like literally advertised as the opposite autism as vi/emacs wtf even is the point in go, its like just java without bytecode and made by welfare retards wtf even is the point in everything is a file, im an os developer so give me a grown up answer instead of pretending your on some hi ground cus i just dont get it rite away unlike u what went wrong with 13oomers to fuarrrk up all their software so badly like an autist trying to put peanut butter on a slice of toast and then the toast is full of holes every single thing from desktop to api to security to language to system calls is blatantly retarded how do i avoid this in my os? or do i just have to be non-autistic and this industry is just full of autists and i will be the first normal person to try making an os and so will make the first good one? or is there some reason why time and again everyone fuarrrks up everything so badly?
Crash Override · 2025-10-14 12:43
>>89362 >how do i avoid this in my os? pffffhahaha. Well, you had a right big whinge about how everything is dumb and retarded, so obviously you already know what's better. But you don't. By your own standards, what does that make you? Yes, that's right, it makes YOU dumb and retarded. pffffhahaha.
Guthrie · 2025-10-14 22:45
>>89362 >wtf even is the point in everything is a file less minfuck. it's not like anyone actually bothers to implement the concept anymore, so it's not even relevant any longer.
