I just want to show you guys my 10$ Windows 7 Laptop (this might be a Michael MJD reference)
Recently i''ve been looking into old tech and collecting, i got this laptop to be The old laptop in my collection, i plan to get a Palm, a VCR and a walkman, i also have a DVD player
The laptop itself is a HP Pavillion dv2-1110br
AMD Athlon, 250gb HDD, 2gbs DDR2
I took it to a friend of mine that knows more about hardware than me to clean and see if theres anything broken inside and he said its everything working and authentic, this laptop hadn't even changed the thermal paste at the time, the only problem was with the keyboard, which i got a replacement for very easily, the only change i plan to do with it is getting an SSD, maybe 4gb of ram but not a priority
i would like to see if you guys have any cool old tech, or ideas of what to do with this laptop, im in fact typing this thread from it, thats very cool :D

Fresh batteries are plentiful. They aren't too hard to fix if you have spare 18650s. Been using mine forever, great laptop! Did you get the dock with the sata bay?

i had a similar model back in the day and the trackpad stopped functioning almost immediately. I imported it so warranty was not an option. It sucked. It also had vista and back then linux was harder and there weren't as many resources in my language.

Yes, my iBook has a WiFi card inside, I have a fork of Firefox (actually a fork of TenFourFox) that I maintain for hassle-free browsing (I disable all video options, I only use it for image and text browsing).
It simply works, I'm currently travelling with the iBook, and besides that it's heavy it just does its job. Battery is almost new (about 3 hours of normal use), I do mostly development on it, web browsing, RSS feed reading, email, xmpp+irc+icq+tox, I have modern versions of all the GNU tools (coreutils, gcc 14, openssl, openssh, etc).
And with 1.5GB RAM, when the OS occupies about 128MB of it, everything from that time period works smoothly (Adobe CS4 suite, office 2008, final cut pro, etc).
It's a normal computer, obviously slower by 2025 standards but I'm not in a hurry anyway, I got all the time in the world.
Here is a screenshot from its bigger brother, the iMac G5, and one from the iBook.

I'm currently living in a small apartment with not a lot of funds. i have a smartphone to browse the internet but I hate it, I prefer a physical keyboard and bigger screen. Is getting an old, 2-core laptop for cheap a viable way of having an internet browsing machine? I'd install a lightweight Linux distro and basically only use it for imageboards, youtube, music listening and stuff like banking sometimes. What modern browser would run okay on a piece of soykaf hardware like this?

If you have a spare monitor and keyboard you could potentially run xfce and a browser on your phone with termux-x11

It is definitely viable. I'm currently using a laptop that is worth about 100€ second hand (2018 model). It compares favourably to new models sold in the 300€-400€ range.
Going significantly cheaper is a gamble though. There are decent computers that people just want to get rid of, but there is also a lot of barely working crap.

Depends on how cheap and which 2-core
>I'd install a lightweight Linux distro
Something like Arch, Void or Slackware should work
>imageboards, youtube, music listening and stuff like banking sometimes
YouTube streams in VP9 by default, but with add-ons like h264ify you can live with almost anything 2-core as long as there's an adequate GPU. Even my T500 (Core 2 Duo) with ATI works extremely smooth, almost no different to 2nd gen HP and T420s — although I still couldn't make Firefox use HW acceleration properly on it, so I only watch videos in mpv
>What modern browser would run okay on a piece of soykaf hardware like this?
Firefox, even (one of) the newest versions runs fine on T500, great experience. I only miss smooth scrolling from wayland, but whatever, I'll enjoy it on other machines. You could probably try something like links if you hate yourself, but I don't see a reason if you have even 4 GiB of RAM (DDR3 is dirt cheap tho)

looking at this laptop now, i think i should use it to make a server

This is one of my many older laptoops. Very low system space for my gaymes. Currently have this, Starcraft, and FLstudio.

Have you composed anything with the computer? I'd like to listen lainanon!

Sorry lainanon, this machine is air gaped and I don't want to post my death metal stuff for fear of being doxxed. If you work semi hard, you may be able to find it through the webring, but it will not get you any fruityloop tunes.

I daily drive this along side my beefy desktop(10900k 2080ti). Old laptops can easily be used for the basics if you just install a minimal arch/debian system and optimize it a bit. Thing can handle 1080p 30fps and 720p 60 in the browser no dropped frames even though anytime I've checked forum posts/reddit or AI they will tell you it's too old and can't do anything remotely close to what I'm using it for on a daily basis.
I enjoy this laptop a lot, old enough to be nostalgic, but usable enough to actually do things on it. Even running off a hdd and not really suffering much for it. (I did try to get the system as low to the ground on idle as possible though)
