And if you feel like it, tell us why you choose to use that particular OS/DE/WM, and what you use your device for :D
Here is my desktop, made using assets from "Let's play with Sakura" and other places, as well as (parts of) a custom wintc (https://github.com/rozniak/xfce-winxp-tc).
Styling the default xfce panel with anything other than a flat background is broken, I should replace it sometime.
That's the only PC I have in addition to my work laptop, so I do just about anything on it from playing games to coding. I often have a video or music playing in the background, that's what the space in the corner is for.

Ricing is simply using Breeze windows decorations (to be able to keep rounded window borders even when window is maximized) + color theme + messing a lot with panel colorizer (like creating invisible empty panel at top, bottom and right side of the screen to keep some padding for maximized windows).

I'm using Android 14/One UI 6.1 because my Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 is unironically my main computer. I use a laptop with Ubuntu 20.04 and another one with Windows 10 from time to time, but rarely, the one I use daily for 99% of taks is my tablet. Battery's way better than on the laptops, and it's just more portable and ready for use at all time, it's just easier for me, it's cozy.

I like Void Linux because it's simple and easy to configure the way I want. But generally, I don't care about Linux distros nowadays. I would run anything if it had relatively fresh packages and didn't break on every update.

That's what atomic/immutable distros are good for. Especially when they come with stuff like distrobox/toolbox to build/run apps from source in whatever debian/arch ecosystem they support best.

I only use the simplest OS, man. I'll probably try GhostBSD and then FreeBSD sometime soon.
I use XFCE and will continue to use XFCE until I decide it's no longer enough.
I only use my PC for home use, browsing, email, a few games, and basic programming, since I'm not in IT.

You could consider NomadBSD if you really want to get extra use of your ram. It is a more streamlined FreeBSD that was meant to be able to run on thumb drives and requires only 1GB ram.

I was thinking of using ghostbsd for a while until I got used to the new type of system, then go to freebsd, use it with XFCE, but at boot it already uses 2gb of ram, but even using it all day, the ram doesn't exceed 4gb used.

>How well does freeBSD manage ram usage? I want to use it but I don't know if 8gb of ram is enough.
You could use it with just a hundred mbs of ram, the system itself is pretty lightweight. What can increase ram usage a lot is ZFS but 8gb should be enough, even if you want to use ZFS.
>>88201
What are you measuring ram usage with? I think that programs made for Linux report ram that has been allocated rather than ram that is currently being used. The more accurate measurements are those given by vmstat(8).

That isn't what I personally measured it is the suggested required specs to run it says you need at least 1GB of ram while GhostBSD recommends 4GB in both cases it will be less than that. So regardless it will be lower ram usage. That is assuming you aren't wanting to run a server which this version of BSD isnt geared for that

ive been using slackware since ~2017 because it kinda just never breaks. i update all packages about once every 2 months or so on the -current branch, it all works flawlessly and has since when i first installed it. i've tried different distros but im just too used to having my entire os be made up of shell scripts now.
i like openbox because it's minimal enough that i can go in and add things to it if i want to and it works nice with cortile when i want tiling.

My use is very demanding, I have (!!) Bazzite, you'd think it's entrylevel distro for gamers, but it's fuarrrking great for everything. Ofc it's because it's actually a Fedora Atomic. I can do anything I could ever want in distrobox and toolbox, which are basically docker (podman) containers with automatic passthrough of everything. Lets say you want to build something from source with tons of specific dependencies, it's officially well-known to build well on Arch. You create distrobox Arch container and do it there using native Arch way without cluttering your host os or other distorbox containers, and even if it's a game it will work at native performance because of full automatic passthrough of gpu/audio/networking/etc.

I've been using GNU/Linux since '15, started with bare archwiki install, did it in two days and setup an experimental audio system on an X201, bridging Mixxx with Bitwig, keep in mind there was no pipewire at the time..
After major distrohopping, I settled on Mint Victoria, with Zara packages for the new Mint-Y-Teal themes, libadwaita1-0 and Captain, the OS is max optimised for audio in every way imagine, running on my second and final ThinkPad, the X201 had a homemade display replacement and I opened it to bare bones, until the ~12" display became a nuisance.
You can pretty much tell what I use my device for from my panel and the long reply, the icon after GIMP is MIxxx beta
This has been my only PC since late '19, just got a proper GrapheneOS after years of headaches
The tray has a few very good applets, including Meteo-powered weather, a monochrome toggle and a color picker, also I had to manually dig for hours to fix up bluetooth

The >>88104 isn't standard taskbar, it's combination of panel-colorizer (custom panel + effects), fake invisible panel-colorizer panels for padding, abandoning default window decorations for Breeze for the sake of being able to have rounded corners in maximized windows, and color scheme ripped and customized for Dolphin from a nice but unworkable theme. It's atomic/immutable distro with latest steam, wine, proton, lutris, nvidia, wayland, etc, in the host layer, and everything else installing via flatpak, or manually in distrobox/toolbox containers. It's perfectly bulletproof and at the same time perfectly preconfigured and up-to-date for gaming. Best of all worlds. You can DIY something as bulletproof on some kind of NixOS I guess, but that's a lot of work. And it's not one-time-work, it's regular work.

In Bazzite (and other Fedora Atomic distros), you could just rpm-ostree rollback. You can even pin deployments when you notice they work well to be able to continue trying future updates later while still being able to rollback to any of the pinned ones.

There's also NixOS that works on a similar but a more flexible principle, there you compose your immutable OS image fully yourself through config file. Every time you commit it, new OS image builds. If it fails, you can boot into any of the previous images (it keeps like a dozen previous ones by default iirc). It's way more work than prebuilt immutable distros, but useful for custom scenarios.
Wintermute · 2025-08-24 08:12

But also Gnu Guix System, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and any distro with BTRFS and grub-btrfs can do rollbacks.
You don't have to distro hop, if you don't want. Just reinstall your $current_distro and use btrfs. I admit that btrfs is not as stable as it could be in some cases. For example, some RAID configurations (like RAID5 or RAID6) are not stable and they can corrupt your data on btrfs.
>>88310
The problem with Fedora is that you need to enable the RPM Fusion repo and/or use Flatpak. Fedora doesn't package everything because of Red Hat policy (examples include some codecs and Nvidia drivers).
Guthrie · 2025-08-24 09:44
>>88321
I genuinely believe containerization solve problems and immutable distros enforce it. Just do everything in flatpak/distrobox/toolbox. If you don't need to tinker with system level components use prebuilt systems, if you need to fully DIY, use NixOS.

NTL but i like arch a lot. It's fun to mess around with and pacman is great. You also have the AUR at your disposal as long as you're careful with what you install from there (because none of it's vetted).
The addictive part of arch is the blank canvas you have when you first install it. So many choices of WM, DE, apps, themes, you name it.
Just my 2 cents
Sipho Nkosi · 2025-08-30 00:44

I tried many Linux distros, and I like Arch the most. It requires a lot more technical knowledge to do things, than for example Ubuntu or Mint, but you get the latest software and a very customizable system. I settled on Arch as my main system because I like tiling window managers more, and it's the easiest (IMO) Linux distro to customize out of the box. After installation you only have a blank terminal without any GUI so you have to set up everything yourself. Because of that you learn a lot more about maintaining the system and what's installed on it. Plus there Arch wiki is just a gold mine of information, and if you can follow instructions and copy-paste commands, you don't even have to learn that much. But I prefer at least reading the manpages of programs I use to get the gist of what they're doing.
Also it's extremely lightweight. Idling it uses around 450 MB of RAM on my machine.

Pop OS was marketed as "everything works from the box gaming distro" but that was a lie. And look where it is now - barely alive with only bugfixes and security updates, while its devs switched to fulltime Cosmic DE development. I've yet to see another gaming distro as mismanaged as that one.

Boring tiling wm config incoming. Awesome, picom and a bunch of little utils. A this point I've had this setup for a couple years and I'm quite used to it. I keep all my dotfiles in git. I might move to a wayland compositor if X11 ever gives me trouble.
The x220 is my main laptop i travel with, bring to events and whatnot. I dual-boot Arch and Haiku on it. I have a little HP probook as well for more demanding tasks involving virtualization and heavier compilation. That's running a mostly default KDE Plasma w/ Haiku and Windows in VMWare.

Isn't the way of making a root encrypted gentoo install just:
cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/rootp
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/rootp root
emerge sys-kernel/ugrd
?
I wouldn't risk using an experimental filesystem as my rootfs but I guess the freedom of gentoo is to do whatever so I digress.

Is Ubuntu Touch still being updated? How is it regarding applications support? What if I want to use bank applications or maybe emulators like RetroArch for some fun?
Zero Cool · 2025-09-02 18:51
I'm pissed off by Bazzite so much. This was my first distro that was both "carefully preconfigured" and "conceptually cool", and they managed to destroy that vibe in basically three days. One update removes toolbox - my favorite tool - which I used in every single one of my demons - not a single one worked with distrobox when I tried to migrate - and the very next update somehow managed to also ruin my terminal - Alacritty - which I layered via rpm-ostree. I rebased to older version and gonna chill for a while, but I'll probably have to move on. Feel bad about putting my trust in this piece of soykaf. My advice - just fuarrrking DIY it from the start - there's no royal way. And nowadays, with LLMs being able to find/filter/summarize all the user manual soykaf for you - it's easier than ever. Just don't forget it will BS a lot and you have to use critical/abstract thinking to ask good clarifying questions that sort everything out. Overall, if you really get this, you can guess which distro I'm moving to from 3 tries.
Cypher · 2025-09-03 00:22

Yup, it's still being updated. New stable version based on Ubuntu 24.04 releases this month. Native applications are still an issue, as it mostly uses Qt5. There is a port of librewolf though. For the rest, you can just run Waydroid, it works pretty well unless your particular apps rely on play integrity.

you probably would like to boot into it later too.
there are multiple ways to do that, one is leaving the /boot out of encryption on a different partition, install grub on that and make the kernel open the luks.
another is making grub open the luks, and load the kernel,.which then again has to open the luks, this is usually done by adding a keyfile and make it part of initrd. the latter is more complicated and has restrictions, but obviously has the pro of having your kernel encrypted too. You can find all details on archwiki.

>there are multiple ways to do that, one is leaving the /boot out of encryption on a different partition, install grub on that and make the kernel open the luks.
I highlighted the steps that are needed to make GRUB detect and unlock the partition in a setup where only the rootfs is encrypted (excluding /boot), I'm not going to write down the whole gentoo installation guide lol. After doing what I've highlighted you just need to follow the install and adjust your kernel using the following: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dm-crypt#Kernel_Configuration

Thanks.
Not too many but there is also some personal code to make patches work together.
Here is the list:
01-dwm-pertarg-incnmasterfix-6.4.diff - makes layouts tag specific instead of one layout at the time for whole wm
02-dwm-awesomebar-fixed-6.4.diff - turns dwm bar into something like windows task bar by listing all open windows instead of showing only selected one. Also allowing to hide windows.
03-dwm-statusallmons-6.2.diff - puts status text on all monitors instead of only selected one.
04-dwm-bar-height-spacing-6.3.diff - allows to hardcode bar height to make it more slim
05-dwm-xrdb-alpha-6.4.diff - allows dwm to be styled in runtime, works really well with pywal
06-dwm-actualfullscreen-fixed-6.4.diff - keybind to fullscreen windows
07-dwm-autostart-20161205-bb3bd6f.diff - i dont use it, but it runs script at ~/.dwm/autostart.sh at dwm startup
08-dwm-cfacts-vanitygaps-6.4_combo.diff - adds gaps and many cool layouts
09-dwm-current_desktop-5.8.2.diff - in short, makes dwm work with compositor's workspace switch animations
10-dwm-barpadding-20211020-a786211.diff - speaks for itself
11-dwm-hide_vacant_tags-6.4.diff - hides tags from tagbar (bottom right thing) if there is no windows on them
12-dwm-cyclelayouts-20180524-6.2.diff - keybind to cycle through all available layouts
13-dwm-restoreafterrestart-20220709-d3f93c7.diff - places windows at the tags they belonged to after restart
14-dwm-status2d-barpadding-20241018-44e9799.diff - status 2d allows for drawing in dwm's status text. Thats how i made that cute battery icon and cpu load.
15-dwm-status2d-xrdb-6.2.diff - theoretically allows to get (and draw with) xrdb colors, but i dont use it
16-dwm-appicons-6.5.diff - adds application icons to tag bar.
> I'm new to dwm and have no idea what i'm doing

>dwm
I'm currently using dwm, automatic tiling is better than manual. I don't like fancy things like blur, animations, transparency, etc. however it feels pretty boring, which I guess for some it's a good thing. I experimented with MATE before and I love how comfy it feels, but after using a twm I just can't go back to floating windows, so I feel somewhat conflicted about it.
Vasya Pupkin · 2025-09-22 16:03
How do you people use tiling? Do you have multiple windows open at the same screen and tiled together for prolonged amount of time? I'm not sure what it's good for because I'm mostly using a single fullscreen window at a time for every single app: be it browser, terminal, code editor, file manager, etc.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2025-09-22 16:59
>>89046
I don't have a strict way to use tiling, I just do what feels natural. That aside, I always keep my browser(s) on the first workspace at max size and I only open up multiple windows if I'm copying text from something (stackoverflow, math problems etc.) the 2nd and 3rd workspaces are usually for coding and note taking, the 4th and 5th are mostly just terminals and the rest is miscellaneous, I'm sometimes trying out a new program, I sometimes watch a video and so on. I'm sure that there are some autists who make full use of all of the workspaces and maximize the benefits that tiling wms have to offer but I don't do too much on my computer other than computer science and math stuff.

I'm currently using XFCE, but I used dwm for a while. I almost never use windows maximised, because 16:9 is too wide. For example, I would have my browser take 3/5 of the width, the remaining space would have my password manager and one or two terminals for misc stuff.
When editing documents, I would have my text editor take one half vertically, and the document viewer and a terminal for compilation on the other half.
It doesn't work very well with applications that open multiple windows though. Ghidra was basically unusable for example.

>why OS
After using Arch, Gentoo, Slackware, and Void I settled on Debian once I got a job and stopped caring so much. After a few years I decided to switch to Devuan, purely for the vibe.
>why DE
I've used tiling before when I used Arch/Gentoo/Void and just don't get on with it anymore. It's only really useful for terminal windows, anything else like a browser or Emacs would end up on its own workspace or tabbed together. After realising that I used Window Maker for years until last week when I switched to Plasma.
Why Plasma? I think it's the most advanced DE available. I really like the concept of Activities and the task focus that having only the apps you use for a thing around. I used it as my main interface for work, and still have it on my music and gaming PCs. I made the switch after playing around with labwc and deciding that I just don't have the time for minimal ricing wms anymore. Before going back to Plasma I did check out Gnome having never actually used it. I liked the clean interface, but gdm3 crashed every time on Devuan and I wanted a bit more customisation (I want to swap ctrl and caps lock damn it). So I just took what I liked and chucked it onto Plasma (Overview on super is cool).

We had the exact same distro-hopping past, I also recently switched to Devuan after getting pissed off by systemd.
For the DE, I really tried to enjoy fully polished DEs but floating windows just piss me off nowadays, it feels like a burden to move them. I'm currently using EXWM which is great but as you mentioned, a burden to rice. I like how I can open tiled windows and then tab them while keeping the other windows intact, it's functionality that I haven't found in other WMs, and if there is, then I'll still probably stick with EXWM.
Not posting my rice since it's mostly usability oriented but here's the fastfetch
Zhora · 2025-10-12 07:04
>>89322 (checked)
I don't open enough windows that moving them is a chore to be honest. I hold super, click to drag so that they overlap in a way that makes sense, and use focus follows mouse and raise on focus to select stuff. Often I'll slap Librewolf or Emacs into fullscreen. Terminals are disposable in most cases. I don't listen to music on my laptop so there's not really anything I need to be long-lived; pop open a new one with S-Ret, do what I need, close it and move on. I tried out sway a little just to double check I still felt that way about tiling and still do prefer this way. Maybe I'm just retarded though. Why do you need to move so many out of interest?
Neuromancer · 2025-10-12 07:27

>Why do you need to move so many out of interest?
I like to compartmentalize my browsing history (not anything to do with security, I just don't like it when for example I'm searching up an error and the first pop-up links are invidious and everything that has nothing to do with it), I got profiles for: math, comp"sci", trash, trash math, desmos, and imageboards which I like to keep private hence I use the Tor Browser for this time wasting soykaf (not all of them turned at the same time obviously but it's 3 on average, those being the ones for imageboards, math and comp"sci"). I keep ncmpcpp open for most of the time, Ghidra is a pain in the ass to resume so I tend to keep it open too, I can't think of the last time I used Gnuplot for serious /biz/ but I tend to use that too, I compulsively check out my TODO and schedule .org files, emacs-pdf-tools for reading various crap, vterm mostly for file management since I still haven't got to learning Dired and I think that's about it. I could technically minimize most of this stuff but I'm too comfortable with my work environment to make a change and Ghidra is the only process who can push my specs over the top.
It's very messy, I know, but emacs tabbing makes it look really clean.

It's certainly an interesting distribution.
In a way, it's the "purest" linux distro out there in terms of FOSS philosophy, which is nice to have, but not practical in real life with real people, unfortunately. So definitely dual boot it or have two computers.
I'm not currently using it as the computer went kaputt, and Hyperbola is pretty anal about what hardware it can be installed on. Once I find a nice looking X200/MB2,1/Latitude E6400, I'm getting back to it, however.

I've read about it shortly after leaving my post and I've noticed that they don't even allow packages with SHA256 sums because SHA512 is more secure, but IMO that's stupid and it filters out at least 90% of the non-AUR packages that arch offers. It's also stupid because, to get the same SHA256 sum you'd need to "earn" a computational complexity of 68^36 which is already an absurd amount of computations considering that breaking common encryption takes less than that when excluding side-channel attacks (AES is a good example(2^127 (?)) since it's been commonly deemed as the best by professionals, not the LARPERS on /g/ who think that bigger number after the acronym=better) .
It's a really nice distribution in terms of ideas and philosophy but they've went far too overboard with soykaf that I don't feel like they truly understand (from what I remember the guy handling security doesn't even have a main interest in it) and to get what they're trying to achieve at a functional level you'd need a budget far bigger than whatever they have now.
>In a way, it's the "purest" linux distro out there in terms of FOSS philosophy
I'd say that it's more philosophies mixed at once rather than the free software philosophy, Trisquel, Guix, Parabola and PureOS all follow the autistic standards that GNU has made (literally nothing proprietary, not even fonts or tech support for proprietary software) the init freedom and minimalism goes into other philosophies rather than the one that GNU has made

I picked Debian because it's easy to use and intelligently handles errors when downloading packages, I used to be a hardcore Gentoo user but as my Linux enthusiasm slightly went away I decided to settle to something that's elegant and simple to use.
dwm also comes from my Linux enthusiasm that went away with time, I got comfortable with the keybindings and couldn't bother to switch to another tiling window manager that I'd have to relearn (I'm not touching floating window managers ever again)
>what you use your device for
I use my device to read philosophy, math, gothic literature, rarely physics and sometimes computer science books. I tried to read a bit of chemistry but my brain isn't wired to understand it.. I like the minimalism of void and that it doesn't break on me after every update unlike arch. Awesomewm is highly and easily customizable, plus it has a built in statusbar and notifications. The Youtube web player is bloated as fuarrrk. Try downloading the vids with "Video Downloader" instead, the orange one from flatpak.

I use Ratpoison on Arch but I might switch to Gentoo (maybe?). I'm normally using Bash but I'm testing tcsh because it has autocorrect that tells you what it's going to do and it asks you for confirmation. Here a quote from the man-page:
When spelling correction is invoked in any of these ways and the shell thinks that any part of the command line is misspelled, it prompts with the corrected line:
> set correct = cmd
> lz /usr/bin
CORRECT>ls /usr/bin (y|n|e|a)?
One can answer ‘y’ or space to execute the corrected line, ‘e’ to leave the uncorrected command in the input buffer, ‘a’ to abort the command as if ^C had been hit, and anything else to execute the original line unchanged.
Ratpoison is basically like Tmux but for managing GUI windows. It's manually tiling WM. I normally use all my programs in full screen mode and I use a keybinding to switch windows (C-t 0...9 , or Alt+Tab). And before you ask, I could use StumpWM but I don't need the extra features (like better sloppy focus). The problem with Cagebreak is that it doesn't let me easily print the output of a command in a message box (I use it to display battery info), and it's also missing some features, like the window menu and the feature that lets me to select a window by typing aka C-t ' . I don't need Wayland but I have tested Wayback and it seems to support Ratpoison pretty well. I'm wating for Mahogany to become usable before I switch to Wayland.

# Open built-in Run Dialog.
# You could also use dmenu or something else.
bind r exec
# Show battery info.
# `acpi --battery` gets executed by Bash and the output gets fed to Ratpoison's echo cmd.
bind b exec ratpoison -d :0.0 -c "echo `acpi --battery`"
# Keybindings without prefix

There also are cheap wired keyboards that are low profile. To use wired keyboards you just need a USB hub that can plug in using USBC and there are cheap ones you can get but you need to carefully check if they are for power or data. You can find those cheap too but you have to check reviews well. It gets rid of issue of having to remember to recharge or signal interference and the insecurity of the Bluetooth protocol. My Bluetooth keyboard I use with a tablet it lasts days but gives little warning before it loses power. You also can use a mouse if you like. It's a capacitive stylus since my budget tablet can't even support an active stylus, so it just acts as a finger touch pretty much... well, at least I don't have to charge, and this one I bought is pretty good, I can manage to have some fun drawing with it, got used to not resting my palm on the device, not too bad since it's a smaller tablet, about 11'.

Oddly enough I already own an Intuos, I just don't use it because I like the screen, makes it feel closer to drawing traditionally, setting up the Intuos on my laptop is more bulky and cumbersome of a setup for me, though of course it felt amazing to actually draw on it, the tablet helps me keep it casual, easier to pick it up, draw and put down.

With linux and older hardware it used to be better in the past but ever since ~6.0 came out I feel the kernel has become more bloated. Used to have an old netbook in 2018 with 1gb of ram and the distro I was using ran okay (Bodhi linux), but I doubt I could do that now.

Getting a bit off topic but most multi port hubs have a USBC cable attached to the main body you just need one with a cable long enough to not be hanging in mid air and can be used with peripherals.

Gentoo sounded like the best move for my collection of E-waste, and fast it is! I loved the apt repository, but emerge hasn't left me wanting much (besides less pain around qt ports). Icewm on the other hand is still "in testing" for me. Certain things (like changing the fonts system-wide) surprised me with how little my hand was held, while switching and customizing theming without having to reboot is very sexy. I switched all my 'puters to Gentoo as a sort of self-challenge and to put my money where my mouth is and really see if open source software is the way forward. (I'm leaning toward "yes")

Alright, I sorted my soykaf out. I want fancy gradients, but at the same time I dislike inconsistencies they introduce in context of window colors and decorations. I realized though, that this inconsistency is inobservable if I'm using everything in fullscreen anyway and only look at desktop as something in-between applications. So it's mostly a ricing screenshot issue actually, I also used terminal minimized, but I for the longest time wanted to make proper automatically tiled setup anyway and I finally did. Now I don't look at panels and windows at the same time, I either look at fullscreen windows or I look at desktop with panels when I press meta+space. When some window is fullscreen I still can hover edges of screen to bring panel on top of window and that works fine as well.

I used Windows 10 LTSC for a long time, used Arch for a few years after that mostly to learn Linux and i enjoyed it. After a while, maybe I'm just getting old, I stopped caring for ricing and rolling release and wanted something similar to what 10 LTSC gave me in the sense of only going through security updates and the occasional major upgrade and Debian Stable fit that bill.
Been loving Debian, just werks, infrequent updates save for security ones, and I still have as much granular control over my system as I did with Arch. Took a bit getting used to however as the Arch Wiki really spoils you and Debian's documentation can be a bit obtuse at times but nothing deal breaking, just a different philosophy and workflow.
And KDE for the simple reason that it also just werks and I enjoy its breadth of features. Plus its default appearance looks good.
>and what you use your device for
Work, reading, and retro gaming/emulation hence I don't really mind Debian's slightly older mesa drivers since I have no real need for bleeding edge.

Sounds good for your needs then which is all that matters. KDE really does just work now, it might not be as 'cool' as whatever tiling manager and custom panel or w/e people are running, but you don't have to worry about it. Only issue I had with KDE was baloo, not sure if it's still a problem.

Haven't noticed any issues with baloo on my end. The only thing of note that's gone wrong with KDE was a hard crash a few months ago when I opened the panel configuration menu for some reason but forcing a log out/log in resolved it without me having to reboot.
I think KDE tends to get a bad rep primarily due to vendor specific changes that cause issues that are hard to diagnose. I know KDE on Fedora always tends to have some strange issues with it that are absent on other distros.
