The Internet
jaja · 2025-08-05 11:01
What do you do in the internet? "Web 2.0" is massively regulated, ai slop and draining. Do you browse old school forums/image boards?
Sabo Engle · 2025-08-05 11:57
The Internet is larger than the web. To answer your question, I read and post on forums/imageboard (why dix you specify "old school"? What's a "modern" forum or imageboard like?), I read blogs/personal sites and maintain mine. Recently, I've taken to contribute to OSM (that's web 2.0 I think, or maybe web 3.0 the "semantic web") That gives me a reason to go out more.
Outside of the web, there are a few chatrooms I visit regularly, and a torrent box on i2p.
HELIOS · 2025-08-05 15:21
Binging on porn, like most people. I'm destroyed.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2025-08-06 09:56
I mostly use imageboards and textboards these days. I used to be on certain forums and IRC channels, but I'm sick of having an identity online, so I refuse to use non-anonymous communication whenever I can. TC, Lain, 4-ch, and some others, which I care less about, are where I'm at.
Trinity · 2025-08-06 10:14
>What do you do in the internet?
Invoking the spirit of Lain, generating noise, confusing corporations through schizophrenic behavior. Also complaining about my life. Tried to make friends, but got btfo'd. It was part of the plan. Lets all love Lain.

Indeed. I found so much more interesting content on gopher in the last years than on any WWW site.

I don't know anymore. I just use the internet bcz it's the only source of knowledge for me. I only browse websites that satisfy my hunger for knowledge. I have a weird desire related to the internet. A really weird one. I wish I could connect my brain with computers and machines. If I could, I'd download the entire wikipedia and feed it inside me to complete myself. Thinking about it makes my heart race.
Chani · 2025-08-17 07:39
Sometimes I come to places like lain, but lately I spend most of my time playing MUDs. Every once in a while I go into irc but it's had a lot less activity than it used to.

Meddler · 2025-08-17 11:07
i read the news (BBC, Scripps), I participate in a good forum, I look up information on DuckDuckGo and Wikipedia, and I browse and occasionallu post on Lainchan. The internet has turned into such a big corporate/state poophole that it isn't worth exploring any more.
Marly Krushkhova · 2025-08-17 11:37
I waste too much time watching youtube videos that don't have any value except (shoddy) entertainment. I try to find interesting communities, but I don't have much to talk about. I don't play any one particular video game, I play some but not for any meaningful length of time. I don't have anything to write about on a blog site.
My mind is doing the thing where it finds some new, ideal, projection of my personality that it's trying to achieve (in this instance, I could call it "analog simple living"), and I try to implement drastic changes in my routine to get there. But I fall back into old habits, but, with every failure, I change a bit for the better. And I hope that someday I'll just disconnect from this (mostly) pile of garbage, and stay mostly offline for the rest of my days.

I agree.

I'm exploring a small web with https://wiby.me lately. The mainstream web is so unbelievably slow, extra ugly, empty, censored, and full of "AI" soykaf. But normal people don't care as usual. Like, at all.

i struggle to find meaningful or interesting content beyond curios on gopher etc. i know its been ages since i was anywhere close to the bleed edge of the world-wide web, but i'll be honest in saying i'm not even sure how i got to that point 25 years ago. just felt lucky.
nothing so far that i've uncovered in the greater internet feels like anything so interesting or organic as the pre-2.0 web. gemini, gopher, etc feel like lifeless fingers.

wondering the same thing recently, especially as ID verifications are being pushed. the options seem to be running thin.

While im at work I do 4 things, browse lemmy/hackernews and read all the news sites and blogs. Research and learn about anything I see mentioned and work my boring deadend job.
When im at home I open my chat clients no one messages me but I watch the conversations. Go on my forums/imageboards and see if there are any updates to the threads im watching.
Sometimes I work on my website sometimes i crash out over some post I disagree with and spend hours researching and typing up a reply just to get derezzed. I search random terms in DuckDuckGo and browse through any forums and imageboards I can find and try to connect with people where possible. I dont know what im looking for. I think I yearn for a community of people that are like me but also geographically close to me. It doesnt exist I feel like ive searched dam near every website in my country and every group has moved to facebook and i dont use facebook. I love the internet and what it could be but I despise what it became and some days I am angry at the people I perceive to be "ruining it" and myself for caring so much.

I used to just lurk out of fear of losing anonymity. Lately I began posting but 4chan is hard to reach in my country and this place is so very slow. Ended up making my own website and got one friend out of it.
If anyone wants to say hello its anonymous:

Torrent, steal youtube videos, listen to schizo x spaces, watch rumble channels, and run an i2p router and also torrent on that. Also use it to check hobbies(which are all slowly becoming cyberhumped by normals) Honestly, forums and image boards are close to dead to me. Too much spam and bots, I only come on these when I'm bored and want to rant. I'm essentially prepping myself for off grid living because I am pretty sure I'm just going to phase out the internet in the next 5 years since it's becoming absolute garbage. I want a huge offline private server full of interesting stuff to read and think about and listen to, not just entertainment media garbage.
That's the main thing I use internet for now, prepping to not have any more internet
Dujour · 2025-10-19 01:14
It's funny how no one will renounce youtube which is really what mostly keeps people locked in their minds wasting hours of their lives. I have yet to see a guy blog posting about his "minimalism" that does not recommend yt-dlp. it's the last thing that no one wants to renounce. Youtube is literally the antichrist of today's lack of separation between internet and real life a la early 2000s, then twitch, then smartphones with tiktok. All caused by high speed internet and cheap powerful processors.
I used to put videos in the background and it would trick my mind into thinking i wasn't alone anymore. Whatever you do, even if you just use a VT220, you gotta have a way to consume Google's YouTube.com, lol.
Do you want to fix the world? Get back to "Web 2.0"? Get the world back to pre-2002 CPUs and dial up (impossible). No easy streaming, no power to run 40 MB JS tracking websites.

I can't believe it, I'm doing the same thing! I look up aesthetics and pictures online, give it a name, and try to embody it in my day-to-day life. I also fail horribly and revert back to my habits but carry forward a couple of good habits from each try. We really have no unique experiences huh.
Nameless · 2025-10-19 05:03
fuarrrk around on gemini protocol, look at gopher, do image boards, grab comics and epubs
Nemissa · 2025-10-19 07:39
I don't spend as much time on internet anymore as I used to.
Mainly posting on some forums, digging music and reading news. Sometimes I watch porn but it's 15 minutes every 2 or 3 weeks.
As I'm night working and the times is sometimes slow, I watch youtube while doing other things.
I'm much happier doing IRL things now.
I have a project to host an IB but I don't get the motivation for the moment.

1. generating mecha-themed ai slop too
2. doing work @ work pc
3. chanposting
4. Something which involves signing letters with my name may occur from time to time

Chat on Discord, do AI chatbot roleplay, doomscroll imageboards and YouTube, play slop gacha games, fiddle with my desktop and homelab. That's about it. I'd like to move to more decentralized options before all this mandatory ID nonsense goes any further, but I'm still stuck in the same predicament as I was in a decade ago: nobody's on altnets, so nobody goes to altnets. Same with Matrix/XMPP etc. I used Matrix a decade ago and I remember the servers were horribly optimized. Hopefully these ID mandates push more people to decentralized platforms. Maybe I'll look at joining a small webring or something, but they pretty much just end up being blogs that never get more than a post or two.

I think this is not what we're dealing with. In ancient times, when there were no big sites, small sites weren't actually bigger or significantly more populated than they are now. It's just that our perception of the internet changed irreversibly after we got to experience big sites. We simply enjoy small sites less after having an opportunity to experience big ones.

read up neat blogs about whatever am into at the time, online radios, youtube(through invidious, tho i still dislike how much i use it), forums(mainly art and tech places), occasionally IRC, and sometimes come here.

Im going into lockdown mode and make my own self contained bootstrap systems for a start.
The plan is to eventually have entirely custom p2p network systems with its own protocols and software that throws away all normal conventions.
My usage of the internet also heavely diminished over the years, i mostly use it to hoard content offline and communicate over irc and use smaller forums and chans for assorted purposes.
Eventually i plan to integrate organic systems into them such as energy production derived from plant oils nd/or alcohols.
Plus have them produced in growing chambers using leds, water reclamation systems that feedback into larger systems.
There is also much potential for gaining minerals from plants and synthesisyng simple organic compunds.
Also i finally got a good opportunity to start my robotics program using usb components to produce robots that can be reassemble at will for different uses and use a more organic design principle instead of monolithic systems.
The dead corpo internet is dying no matter how much "ai" they slap on it, its only going to get a worse echochamber that will collapse in on itself and the clueless normgroids will just look at their own demise like sheep.

Whoops i wrote the organic part before the robots part, the stuff starting at the second paragraph should be at the end of the third, sorry for the confusion.

Hard to use 4chan truely anonymously since they won't allow people to use VPN services , unless you have a pass if that's still a thing?

I've never heard of this before, It might be happening. I have just avoided using 4chan just due to the sheer amount of posts that seem to have hidden agendas being pushed onto the real users on the site, as well as not being able to use a VPN I think that takes away from the whole 'anonymous' posting aspect. Probably find that more interesting things can be discussed on smaller image boards with less of a major following with less low tier bait threads.
