What smartphone do you use?

Undisclosed · 2025-06-19 08:50
It's odd that despite smartphones being so essential in society now, we don't have a single thread dedicated to them on a technology board, I figured I might aswell take matters into my own hands and make one. How do you feel about smartphones overall? What are your preferences? Discuss.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

this debate is pointless. phone market has been lost. some schizos go ahead and use things like graphene or lineage, but those OSes are like linux - they serve no purpose except annoy you and keep your mind occupied with petty compatibility/usability issues. after years of single minded fuarrrkery with console you stop noticing, but if you use a cumsooner OS for a while you'll feel the striking difference and the sheer amount of stupid little nuisances you submit to when you try to escape the botnet. the problem is that it serves no purpose. a phone is a pocket spy and there's no meaningful way around that in most parts of the worlds. you just have to accept it and move on. >How do you feel about smartphones overall? useless for pretty much every purpose. their original purpose - to provide means to quickly call others from anywhere - is still relevant and good, but everything else is junk and pure totalitarianism. they are inferior in every way to a normal computer. right now smart phones do not serve any purpose at all except providing means to track down your every breath. >What are your preferences? none at all. i'll use whatever works, i don't give a soykaf who spies on me. i used to use chinese bitch phones in the past, but they are miserable and lately full of annoying ads too, so i switched to burger phones, right now i stick with samsung. the OS is soykaf, but the specs are adequate for the price i paid. ironically the only times i use it is when the big daddy wants me to prove my identity for bank logins. also when calling people >Discuss. fuarrrk off nigger. i hate people like you. i hope you catch cancer and die in agony for being such a fuarrrking retarded 4channer. moron

My biggest gripe with it is how much time I spend on it, not it's privacy stuff. So I've basically locked down my phone using adb and a pass lock. I just use the built in app Store to get apps and don't bother with signing i in to Google or any of those stuff. Neither do I bother with making it private. I just use as it is.

Actually, it lies white on my desk (the one that’s in the image in the answer above; I have the same), doesn’t get in the way, takes up little space, and unfolds perfectly like a flip. The Nokia 2720 Flip is my first and last experience in this regard, but a rather successful one. I think that in the future, of course, if WhatsApp support continues, one can try more button phones “for taste.”

Any opinions on Android's new built-in "Linux Terminal" vs Termux? It's kind of hard to find comparisons, probably due to Termux being a literal Linux terminal for Android.

>>87316 > no smartphone with low res display Why would you even want this? > no smartphone with multiple usbc ports For what? > iphones are a joke They have pros and cons. Security wise they are fairly good and their updates are not as short lived as Android's plus the benefit of pair locking it to your computer so data can not be just accessed at borders and airports with a quick scan. Privacy wise and customizability you'd want a custom Android rom. >buying apple products new is a joke always Apple sells refurbished products on their website under a section for it. The price is not as good as you get second hand but you get their full warranty which is good for some instances. I am not sure if it is worth it for a phone but it is for a laptop since they will do things like replace the storage if it is faulty and it's a special one they use so it would be costly to do without warranty. That's only thing Apple really has going for itself is their Apple Store service. As far as I know pretty much every other company you have to mail in what you want repaired or replaced but Apple does it on location and goes through better effort to destroy used drives entirely to recycle them. >why does my thinkpad have a hole for sim cards For wireless internet. You could get sim cards with plans that are internet only. This was more common on netbooks though. > why is it a secret hole on this thinkpad they were never secret before It likely is placed to keep it secure.

It wasn't so much privacy that started it, but just going out without it here and there, not missing it, coming home to a bunch of bullshit messages and realizing I'd rather just not see that. I guess I'm a luddite now officially, but I don't really care. When I think about death I don't believe spending more time reading bullshit on my phone will be a significant regret, nor will I see endless micro-conversations about nothing with family as something to have spent more time doing. >>87346 There is not much difference when you don't compile from code yourself after you audited every line of the code yourself with high accuracy and are using open hardware phone to put it on with firmware on it you audited and compiled yourself, using a computer that is open hardware itself with firmware code you audited and compiled yourself. In the end you are just placing trust on others. You have to think realistically in motives. A private company has priority of profit but depending on how they run they will aim for this different ways. Cheap product companies are the ones you really want to look out for the most since they do not have a high reputation and bring down prices by malicious means while companies selling products considered high end have a reputation to maintain. So long as they do not have dominance so strong their reputation becomes irrelevant and unkillable like Microsoft then they will want to avoid any bad PR that goes against their image. The image Apple built up is around security and privacy. If they fail at these things, being that iPhone is their biggest source of income it would place a huge blow to their profits if they were ever exposed as doing anything that did not tell people they were doing. While many companies or individuals may break from their image many dont. So it depends on your threat model and what you perceive as the bigger risk to you personally. FOSS has it's merits but it isnt the end all be all like you Stallman cultist glitterboys think it is.

Apple has agreed to the $95 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that its built-in AI virtual assistant, known as Siri, recorded users' private conversations without their required consent. >The class action lawsuit alleged that Siri's accidental activations resulted in the recording of confidential discussions, which allegedly may have been shared with others, including advertisers. >The class action complaint cited instances where users discussed specific products or medical treatments, only to later receive targeted advertisements related to those discussions. https://www.reuters.com/legal/apple-must-face-narrowed-privacy-lawsuit-over-its-apps-2024-09-27/ >U.S. District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California, dismissed nearly all claims based on the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting on Apple mobile devices, but let some claims proceed over the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting. >Mobile device users said Apple violated their user agreements and several privacy and consumer protection laws by assuring that disabling the settings would limit its collection, storage and use of their data - only to then ignore their choices and collect, store and use that data. >In a 39-page decision late Thursday, Davila said Apple made clear to users that the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting applied to "other companies' apps and websites." >He said that made it "implausible" for reasonable people to believe that by turning the setting off, they were withdrawing consent for Apple to collect their data through its own apps. >But the judge said users plausibly alleged they withdrew such consent by disabling the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting, citing Apple's disclosure that users may "disable the sharing of Device Analytics altogether." >The Cupertino, California-based company has said it collects data through that setting to improve its products and services. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1039938 >default apps collect data even when supposedly disabled, and this is hard to switch off >The researchers studied eight apps: Safari, Siri, Family Sharing, iMessage, FaceTime, Location Services, Find My and Touch ID. >The fragility of the privacy protections surprised even the researchers. >‘Due to the way the user interface is designed, users don’t know what is going on. For example, the user is given the option to enable or not enable Siri, Apple's virtual assistant. But enabling only refers to whether you use Siri's voice control. Siri collects data in the background from other apps you use, regardless of your choice, unless you understand how to go into the settings and specifically change that,’ says Lindqvist. >In practice, protecting privacy on an Apple device requires persistent and expert clicking on each app individually. Apple's help falls short. >‘The online instructions for restricting data access are very complex and confusing, and the steps required are scattered in different places. There’s no clear direction on whether to go to the app settings, the central settings – or even both,’ says Amel Bourdoucen, a doctoral researcher at Aalto. >‘It turned out that the participants weren’t able to prevent any of the apps from sharing their data with other applications or the service provider,’ Bourdoucen says. https://sneak.berlin/20230115/macos-scans-your-local-files-now/ >Apple Has Begun Scanning Your Local Image Files Without Consent >deleted direct quotes to not trigger spam filter Everybody would choose to open source all OS, except your corpo nigger employers and the NSA because their house of cards would collapse.

Trusting apple is stupid. Most normgroids already believe apple is a privacy becon of hope in the darkenss and won't look into it anyways. If they were F'ing their customers up the ass (they are) most would just use rhetoric from 10 years ago to deny it's happening because people get their egos entwined with products instead of neutrally assessing the reality of a given device/product/software etc. Foss software has issues all over the place, let's be honest. If it were perfect it would be mass adopted by now but at least the principle of it is in good faith. They actually give a f to some degree. Proprietary is simple, does it make money? Can I get away with this legally or obfuscate it from the legal process?
