Researching CS

Any lainons in academics? I want to break free of my boring enterprise job and do something actually enjoyable, so I'm looking at doing a Masters of Research. The problem is that I don't know what sort of research is in scope for a 2 year course (I cant estimate how long anything will take, I have no previous experience with research) and i consistently feel like I have a knowledge gap that's preventing me from coming up with good original ideas (for example, I spent a long time thinking I was on to something big in type theory, until I discovered refinement types which are exactly what I was trying to describe). This makes me discouraged. How can I cope with both of these and improve? I don't even understand whether research needs to be wholly original - most of the grad advice I've been reading says that if there arent enough studies on a topic publishing more is fine, but how do I know if the field(s) are over saturated?
