Are (you) making an altchan?
its a better time than ever lainons!
is there a board 4chinz you want to see back?
for me its a /soc/ blue board, the /dgg/ general and the /cyoar/ general
>/dgg/, especially this one since i host the wiki for it
how will (you) attract a minimum critical mass to your altchan anon?
i hope these little pockets of effortposting dont dissipate, thyre the only things that made any of these imageboard goods
i know theres like two other threads but there should be a cambrian explosion of altchans about now and there should be at least a thread to document/encourage it(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. Leaving this thread in place, but generally you should have used the existing threads, not made a fake excuse to make a new one.)

No, /g/ was a terrible place, the only decent places of it were the generals. Sadly people are pieces of soykaf, when they see something where they can post anonymously, they will post the worst content unimaginable (CSAM, Gore, etc). For a reason, 4chan blocked VPNs and Tor, just because of a few people that abused those services to post an circumvent bans.
I got in /g/ in 2020, I learned a lot about online privacy from it, but now, it just feels like a dumpster fire with low quality posting and people seething and fighting over anything with no real arguments and sources. The generals were probably the best place to discuss about real technology.

Thinking about it. I'm probing the communities where I expect the relevant refugees to be. If any refugees express interest and if 4 doesn't seem to be coming back anytime soon, I'll probably begin thinking about provisioning a vichan instance for them.
If there's no interest, or if 4 seems like they're making fast progress, though, I don't think I'll waste the time or money.

I run an in-house developed board, but I wouldn't want to use it more than as a "feature rich guestbook" with how immature the code is.
If I end up making a refugee camp, it would very much be with more mature code from an established project like vichan, jschan, etc.

It doesn't mean much, but I'd care man. I'd care alot. /f/ was the best comfiest board by a long shot. There were a few generals that were fun and comfy to hang out in, but /f/ was a whole board of comfy. I'd see things like anons posting flashes, then days later someone else posts a similar flash and specifics that it was for that first anon cause they liked the first flash. That simply does not happen on other boards. I guess it's because flashes are archaic in internet terms and making them isn't any were near as simple as making an image or even a video. Effort forces higher quality posts and all that.

started one awhile back but realized i don't want to be a full-time sys-admin playing whack-a-mole with degens and letter agents spamming dangerous material.
Still would love to see some of my ideas implemented
>a chan that has 1 board, except users can tag their threads, and then filter to only see tags they're interested in
The downside of this would be no more unique board culture, and further converging on the idea of general threads overtaking regular one-offs. But you'd also no longer need bumping or saging, so threads could just time-out after so long with X reply count
>subsequently, embracing generals as 1st class, and allowing them to be rolling with some auto post-limit culling
>replacing mods and jannies with a dynamic user-weighted report system to auto-manage (some) brewing soykaf
A lot of work, testing and iteration, but also a valid use-case for machine learning as well.
>return of derezzed users having no read-access like older 4ch
In general image-boards should stop trying to live in 2003, and adapt to what the internet is now.

I think a cool feature would be for each board to have an anonymous IRC chat embedded on its home page for anons to use, or even one that pops up at the bottom of general threads. Text only, messages expire after 7 days, could enhance communication without chewing through general threads every few hours/days.
Jane Doe · 2025-04-16 20:11
The closest things I had to home for the last year or so were just lurking random threads on /vr/ that would catch my eye and always keeping the most recent /bag/ thread open mainly for news. most people do not have the grit to stick with and wage slave a board for years while having only 5 users that post twice a week. adding features or specific boards is nowhere near as important to the average user as the board being active, that's why half the refugees here will bolt the second 4chin is back up (especially the people who vehemently claim otherwise). and i say this as someone who happily spent years on forums that had less than 15 users.

I've thought about it. I'd want to write the board software myself to incorporate different features, but I have too much on my plate currently so I'm probably not going to get around to it.
The features would mostly be focused on reducing the need for manual moderation in terms of the image content posted by users (I wouldn't particularly care what people type, as it is much easier to filter out bad text as opposed to bad images).
>>85203 has some ideas that are similar to mine that I'd incorporate, but I'd focus more on helping moderation as I would assume my site would be small (at least to start out):
>limit image uploads to only be direct links to boorus (I know this is boring, but it'd curtail pizza, gore, etc at least until more moderators are added)
>a sophisticated auto-sage system so the same threads don't clog up the catalog (the exception would be generals)
>a user "suspicion" system where a user's suspicion level is based on things like post rate, text content compared against some database of spam by some automated analysis, etc.
Erik Johansson · 2025-04-17 06:29
Write a quick 4chan clone and advertise it on plebbit and twatter and make sure the moderation team isn't a bunch of wankers. Everything will be great and cool.

i was thinking of an email/chan/ where you register to post with an email (any email even temps, though personal emails with your name in it or corporate account emails would probably be derezzed) and you can make posts, however if you want to PM a user for a follow up to a non-soykaf post you can just email them as their mailto is displayed with every post.

I do think moderation is probably the hardest thing for any altchan. Without it, it's bound to get shut down quickly or soykaf up by people who just want to see the world burn. This is only a problem with imageboards, mind you - text-only boards are pretty tame by virtue of having no images. I'd like to see those make a comeback.
Maybe heretical of me to say but I wonder if a machine learning model could be helpful for moderation. One trained to flag any potentially illegal image content. Make it really aggressive at first, autoban people that it flags.

I know that the sharty has curtailed all CP spam by forcing all images to go through mod approval. Takes less than a minute in most cases.
There's a thread up there where they're trying to parse through the 4chan source code but they're having issues.
I sense that lainons have more experience with backend programming, they just don't have the energy to be the janitors. Maybe a team up is in order? last thing I want is 8chan be the successor.

I'm sure 4chan will return in a week or so anyway. I'm just surprised that there's no real runner up that was prepared to take 4chan. sharty is just /s4s/ and 8chan is ebola. Every other chan is defunct or overly strict, and I don't want enforced politeness like here.

i'm aware of this, just manually approving every image posted is not sustainable in the long run unless you scale up the manpower; you need a technical solution for the issue.

ill be frank fam a big issue with anonymous imageboards in general is that soykafting them up takes nothing. the only thing stopping an IB from turning into a completely unusable soykafhole that's nothing but spam, botting and the most predictable and socially dysgenic attention-catching, conversation-ruining, culture-destroying tricks is some degree of moderation. the only thing giving these places any identity are the biases from the mods and jannies. 4chan was an awful fuarrrking place chock-full of the worst sh1lling and baiting because that's what mods liked and enforced. lain might come off as too much of a hugbox but that's part of the point, having to use more than half a worn out brain cell to post is what differentiates it from other places. same with 8moe's free board creation and freeze-speach, all-refugees-welcome MAP adjacent halfwits at the helm. zzz's dick-choking z00mz. etc. even the language in this post is toxic. using these words invites in the people who use them and the worlds they use them in. the point with altchans is that you pick your flavor.

running a website is definitely like raising a baby, going to need to be very hands on for the first couple years. I think their solution, while inelegant, has worked well enough. So far there hasn't been an automated system that works.
You know, it's strange, everyone is sort of aware that the internet has shrunk down into a handful of big websites (facebook, twitter etc). But we're part of a subculture that just wanted to make our own websites and enjoy our own hobbies and the feds literally sent illegal content to shut down numorous altchans to prevent anyone from doing their own thing.
Makes you wonder how many other stories are the same. Someone makes an alternative and it gets shut down through sabotage

I don't know what my problem is but I enjoyed 4chan up til the end. I like that brewing soykaf and effortposting can coincide in the same space. I like how the userbase was largely comprised of white dudes who were all on the same page, with the same ideas and same understanding of what is good and what isn't.
Yeah there were lots of soykaf that ruined it, namely mods forcing their favorite memes on the users while banning and deleting organic memes made recently.
I get that people want a space to talk seriously and mods need to enforce that, but there needs to be room to breathe, to have fun.
I enjoyed winterball in 2013, I enjoyed the cross board april fools day event.
Soyjaks should have been allowed on 4chan, there was a point where pepe and wojak was insta 404'd. These aren't organic decisions. The mods are dictating culture. Now the soyjaks literally killed that fuarrrking site to spite them because they became reddit mods.
I hope those stupid cunt mods take a fuarrrking hint but they won't. They're setting up perma ban word filters for anyone who even types soyjak. Instead of admitting that they've derezzed too far they're just going to step up which will really kill the site

I've thought about that but I don't think running some sort of machine learning model would be worth it in terms of cost - too computationally intensive/slow. Plus then you run into the issue where, you know, need training data...
I think the optimal solution (and the one that I've been mulling over) is to employ some type of locality-sensitive hashing mechanism fed into some statistical model that compares the text post to some database of known spam, which contributes to my aforementioned "suspicion" system, to quantitatively ban users. I'd streamline the ban appeals process so that innocent users/moderators can reconcile but keep the bad actors out.

That one's pretty simple, and it's been a matter of discussion across several alt-chans' meta boards over the past year.
More or less, it's pay-per-download scams. Basically, there's site that, likely for soykaf like being able to service ads to downloaders, they pay a comission to uploaders of something like $0.10/DL or something like that.
Spammers in general use all sorts of soykaf as bait for this, but CP is just another angle. The spammer will load up a rar, often not even with real CP, and host it somewhere, and then spam CP bait images to get people to DL it. Every time a horny pedo falls for it, the spammer gets a bit of money.
This has been a known routine since ~2009, and iirc, there's even a playbook out there on how to do it written by some brazillian teen or something that got notorious for it.

nah, it's stuff like where a host that serves ads pays you a small amount per download since they can serve the downloader an ad.
these sites are intended for legit file hosting and it's usually against their TOS to do soykaf like this, but one way to min-max the system and turn over profit is to load up some random porno and spam links to a high CPM forum.
The pay per download hosts aren't specifically paying people to upload CP, they're just adservice users.

Unsure. This is just a general trend that's been discussed among some alt-chan admins over the course of the year.
Who it's coming from will tend to vary by what wave of spam you're talking about. Packethub S.A, OVH and M247 were mentioned as prominent in one thread I've been reading.
It looks like the most expedient way to whack'em is to just mass ban datacenters and tor. Adding all of this to UFW seems like a good hammer for screwing with spammers in general:
https://github.com/X4BNet/lists_vpn/blob/main/output/datacenter/ipv4.txt
That said, there's definitely chans that explicitly don't want this. Lain, for instance, does allow Torposting. Not sure how appleman accomplishes it or what config modifications lainchan has, though.

In my homebrew imageboard, each board is a table. Tables are pic related.
tid determines whether a post is a top level post or a reply. If tid=0, it's top level. If not, then the tid=post_id of the post that it's a reply to.
timestamp is the unix time of the post's creation.
bumper is the unix stamp of the time of the most recent reply post's creation.
most of the other fields should be understandable.
several rows are redundancies from previous versions of the software I've just not removed. These are: date and board. Date stored the human readable date of post creation, but this can be programmatically derived from the timestamp. Board was going to be a method for indexing posts to different boards, but this ended up complicating moderation tools, so I nix'd that idea and just use message_[board name] duplicates of this table now to do seperate boards, although this is indefinitely incomplete, since I'm probably just going to deploy vichan if I decide to make a full on chan.

maybe the imageboard format is outdated? I mean 4chan & it's jannies really was keeping all the other altchan afloat. I also think the userbase was way smaller then we might have thought. something like only 30% human

thank god for this thread and lainchan and lainons in general. I think now is probably a good time for altchan landscape to improve a bit. I don't think the site is ever coming back
I miss nanochan a lot, it was nice having an onion chan that didn't have anything gross
I miss /hsg/ and a few other threads. I always came here more for reading tech threads. I miss parts of /lmg/ because it was silly and some peoples rigs and GPU clusters were cool. I miss a lot of things but the site has been 'dead' a long time. I remember it in 2010 but not before
>>85420
I don't think so, I think a certain type of person needs someplace to post without an account. I might just be ignorant but it feels like the most active imageboard now is that russian 2ch. I don't wanna go sharty route and sift through literal soykaf

I don't think lainons appreciate refugees much, but it's okay. I think another (or a new) altchan would be a better fit, because here is a very specific culture. I like this chan a lot but I don't post here much because lainons kinda keep to their own crowd I feel like

Completely fair, I 100% respect that. Was just spit-balling, more than anything. It was maybe one of two ore three threads worth keeping on /g/ and I hope the user base doesn't spread to the winds before a new home can be found.

I was feeling pretty despondent a minute ago but reading through this thread gives me a bit of hope. I don't want to see 8chan's corpse get an influx of fresh blood. There's a fine line where you want a good amount of banter in those sorts of threads and this chan isn't the place for it from what I've gauged over the years
I agree with anons that say the cp spam is an issue and is orchestrated/professional, I've seen small chans disappear and later on that was the story someone said, can never fully know myself but I've heard so many horror stories and even the sharty has their way of dealing with it. As much as I'm really not interested in being there, limiting images to mod approval is not a terrible idea. It would be nice if small sites could actually contact feds and use the many tools developed to automatically detect and remove that stuff. But sadly they might very well be the problem. The idea of a chan with "approved" images available isn't a bad idea, but it becomes a textchan for most people and makes explicit boards very ineffectual (and annoying to moderate). Of course people might not want that in an altchan but the 4chan refugees will want a chan that has nsfw boards available

i think kohlchan has the best approach to pseudonymous posting with anonymous networks. they generate an argon2d hash and you have to crack it. so, your average PoW solution, but with an intentionally pain in the ass algorithm for hashcracking. if you are a troublemaker, your session will be revoked and you'll have to solve another hash. obviously a dedicated person will just keep cracking hashes, but this approach makes it considerably harder for troublemakers as the poster is no longer able to just CTRL+SHIFT+R to get another node and keep spamming
Acid Burn · 2025-04-19 09:28

It's very simple. Within an Nginx server block, just add your onion address to the server_name directive.

Hotaru stands with cool elegance, violet eyes sharp beneath soft bangs. Her outfit is prim, ruffles, ribbons, and dark stockings, but there’s a quiet heat beneath it all. The rose in her hair whispers of danger, the curve of her lips dares you to look closer. She’s not just poised, she’s magnetic. A beautiful mystery wrapped in silk and shadows.

I would avoid this approach personally. It seems reasonable at first, but you'll regret it once you hit that infinitely deep join on parent posts. To a lesser extend, you also have to worry about circular refrences on your parents.
Hagbard Celine · 2025-04-20 23:09
>>85602
Imageboards are transient, bump limits and pages make it so you never have to query more than a few thousand rows at a time.
Also no need for joins, just query all the posts with a null parent to make a catalog and all the posts that belongs to a parent to load a thread, since posts and threads share so many attributes it is the only way to comply with formal normalization.
Anamika · 2025-04-22 02:18
Why doesn't someone make a meta altchan which aggregates threads from every altchan's topic board. Like /g/ from half, /tech/ from fullchan and a bunch of other imageboards but the UI doesn't let you know immediately where the thread is from so you can participate without any barriers
Although i wonder if such a thing would degrade the individual culture?

Only a standalone program can do something like that.

libpol.org (fka brainworm.rodeo) is a "live board" meaning that posts can be edited in real time as you're posting, so that you can have conversations with people looking at the same threads you are. it's decent and a cool idea, but I wonder if they plan to change the name soon. the admin browses here iirc

going to be honest you're gonna have to learn at least some technical skills, as for the features most of them seem doable, for example you could make the default "delete post" just hide it from everyone else's view.

Interesting, thanks for the feed back and i presume doing an npm run dev. Web3 dev gets gnarly really quick once you start building outside the current state of webdev . Pretty solid arguement to do an ultra thin web app and a background server (maybe go)
Mind if i ask for the hardware spec that its making it take for it to load?

I think I would have more interest if your board had more focus on being a new home for the people who lost their home board after textboard.org bit the dust. Leftypol and getchan still exist, I just don't see the point of yet another one of these, but there is a dire lack in having a replacement for /prog/ (with the exception of Lain/lambda/ maybe, but even then it's different "vibe", a different atmosphere, a different feeling, than /prog/ used to be. I appreciate that it's a textboard though, I always found them a lot more engaging and fun than imageboards.

i threw this up in a test environment. it's not bad and actually pretty elegant and fast BUT the mod panel is kinda dire. there should be a way to at least select multiple posts to moderate. posting as a mod also exits out of moderation mode which is kinda annoying.
