To be fair; we already had a pretty good idea; and the fact that so many of the admins/mods had .edu/.gov emails. Basic suspicions have been confirmed. Perhaps a lesson will be learned; perhaps it will have a rebirth or lead to new image boards opening up.

Frank Garza · 2025-04-15 05:49
I don't know if it's just because it's PHP, but this soykaf is really awful to read. The admin panel looks kind of interesting, I kind of want to get the software running just to play around with it. It's probably a pain in the ass setting up ancient dependencies though so I probably won't bother unless someone else figures it out and posts instructions.

4chan normal people get filtered and resort to twitter, reddit and the fagman ecosystem, so altchans get their golden age without getting a massive influx of 4chan users
cancerous internet culture gets wiped out from the wired, especially the memes and the p0l soykaf exported to fagman socials all the time
yes i know it's complete delusion, but let me dream for a bit.

Yeah, there's not really any other place I can think of that hosted so many different topics, and where, even if some of the posters you'd absolutely hate or were on an entirely different kind of boards, most of the users still talked and acted within a familiar range.
And I just don't know what to replace a lot with in the meantime. One thing that gets me is thinking about how: when Mangadex went down thanks to a big hack and leak, /a/ started doing daily chapters, and it was such a fun way to share in manga together that there were several chains of dailies that continued for the next few years. Now /a/ is gone, I can't read my chapters, I can't discuss any new episodes this week, there's not a place to go for it, and with the scale of the leak, it's unsure if things will come back.
Tequila · 2025-04-15 08:38
I regret using /p0l/ and some other boards, but I got a lot out of /a/, /int/, and /tv/. The reason I started learning a second language was because of /int/. I still lurked on /a/ until recently. I can probably blame my crippling obsession with tomboys on that fuarrrking site.

You would think that, but looking through the thread, its likely students/interns, normal people, or anyone without any tech sense applying for the job. yeah i read through some of the janitor board and they look even more clueless than the users. there was infighting and low quality spam even in their board lol. basically a miniature 4chan where jannies were moderated by mods. it's funny that they were talking about the same stuff that had a thread every day in other boards: the internet was like this, we should filter that, this will fix 4chan, etcetera etcetera
they also made threads to suggest features to "devs". i didn't manage to find out who the devs were though, doesn't look like other mods.

Mook really needs to make a return or that place should get bought by Elon Musk.
It was apparently really an FBI honeypot since the jannies got to have access and keep IP addresses and physical locations of posters. Supposedly they even kept personal notes about some posters too.
One great thing about the hack was the revelation of filtered terms from the /v/ board allowing me to learn new insults.

Been on there since the end of 2008. After all the election tourists swarmed in for the 2016 elections and ESPECIALLY the 15 minute wait time they implemented, I say good riddance. I know the site is going to recover, but a huge part of me wants it to stay dead. 4chan was always one of the internet's biggest websites, but the internet is no longer niche, which attracted so many of the wrong kinds of people and just turned every board into a micro p0l. What that board needs is a fresh start under a new name or to leave it up to some other chan to take it's throne. Also nice dub dubs.

troon has replaced glitterboy in the edgy internet kid lex these days.
Is not the insult the problem, calling each other "glitterboys" creates a weird comfy vibe because of the level of satire and sarcasm tje internet used to have, but now that vibe is gone, and people are being dickhead to each other because they think they have to, they believe to be in a war, and they'll keep fighting ghosts inside their heads for the rest of their lives. Is why the hacking happened to begin with
Cat Mother · 2025-04-15 11:08

The real problem with the insults and political charged atmosphere of literally everything on 4chan is the fact it's incredibly easy to dismiss anything by calling it "troon". You are not required to give any thought, you can just make an incredibly lazy post to dismiss anything and distrupt conversation of any kind, many people's sole existence on 4chan was to just distrupt conversation and destroy any meaningful conversation of anything, even if it was a cute slice of life comedy.

But it was fun, brewing soykaf was kinda fun. Though I did find myself in a decent conversation at least once a month especially on the less populated boards.
Also in the wake of this happening I decided to check out other places I used to visit, found out that the letterbox (afternoon.dynu.com) has been dead since last year too and that made me a little sad.

Indeed, it's the same principle, hence why people point to 2016 as the year where 4chan truly lost something important. Once you throw politics into occasion, wher it shouldn't be, you have people who simply dismiss you, since they believe you or that thing belongs to the "enemy". So to speak.

my biggest fear is that some of the communities and board/thread cultures that have developed over the years could really die out for good. Sure some of them were cancerous but there were some good communities which really would be a tragedy to die like this

looking into the codebase further, the regexes used for each board which outright BLOCKED posts and resulted in a "Error: Our system thinks your post is spam. Please reformat and try again." we're stored in MySQL, so we don't know what prevented submissions on each 4chan board.

It's hard for me to believe what I'm going to say next but 4chan.. kinda felt like the only place left on the internet without being manifested by modern internet culture ?
there was point in time when social media was actually usable, back in early 2010's before it become too excessive. I'm not saying by any mean or capacity 4chan had good culture influence on the internet, internet got to point of being everything but name to empty space that fills the gaps between few mainstream social media apps everyone use now. 4chan still has some of the spark it once held

4chan is (was?) tainted to absolute soykaf with modern internet culture, just a dumber and more vulgar variant of it.
Other imageboards have much better discussions since there is actually some effort put in posts, probably a side effect of being slower.

Alt chans might be in greater danger if 4chan does die. I don't really see if this place is going to be a target, it's small and not so well known. It's too niche. 4chan was a big "everything" board with a lot of people and a notoriety which attracted a lot of unwanted attention. I don't think this place gets that much unwanted attention.
Then again, I saw afternoon.dynu.com, another relaxed text board, often get all sorts of spam in waves. So make of that what you will. With some vigilant mods I think it's going to be fine.

The flipside to this argument is that 4chan seemingly acted as a gateway into chan culture, and niche forums in general. We can see in this thread, and in similar threads on other altchans, how most of their users spent some amount of time on 4chan and learned about other chans through of posts on 4chan.
The death of 4chan could lead to a further decline in new users, as edgy teens will stick to Discord servers and X, and a further centralization of the internet.

For the past year, 4chan has been making small changes to push users towards using their email and purchasing passes, so I'd rather see it die this way than be Reddit 2.0 in a year or two with an account requirement and mtx.

Captchas increased to 900 seconds and were per-board, at least for about an hour after the initial captcha, then you could post in all boards. 4chan also recently increased the cost of passes. Timers made the site nearly unusable for anyone who has their browser clear cookies on exit or similar.
