And if you feel like it, tell us why you choose to use that particular OS/DE/WM, and what you use your device for :D
I'll start: i use this particular machine to study about anything i care about, mostly CS and programming stuff in general. I also use this machine to work remotely through ssh. It has a comfy keyboard so writing in it is a bliss. And the matte screen is great, too.

OS: I'm an old Debian sid/Devuan ceres user, then I found Void linux and thought it was similar, since then I've been on Void for 2 years now.
DE/WM: I've been using XFCE for over 8 years, so I've continued since then, with 4 years using gnome and 1 year using i3wm, I'll probably switch to i3wm again in the future.
> and what you use your device for
Daily use, I'm not a programmer, I don't intend to work in the field any more, or get too involved with it, just small projects.
What I do most here is study, listen to music and watch the news.

After years of distro-hopping and screen-time, I finally reverted back to real life.
The personal computer now only aids me in my personal life and real life things.
I get on the computer, I do my things, and then get off again.
The original classic idea of a PC - a personal computer - was to help out in real life, not replace it. So I don't mind running Windows anymore.

About a year, I have used it on the server much longer though. Rc scripting and pkgsrc are some of the best selling features, extremely simple design, and the performance on older hardware is great.

I have a question, when I use Linux I can make the XFCE use 340 MB of RAM in Idle, while in FreeBSD, XFCE uses in IDLE 1.4 GB of RAM. Is this normal or did I configure something wrong?
Dozer · 2025-04-14 13:14
>>84452
Dont look at memory usage as if "more is bad!!", instead think why. FreeBSD uses ZFS it does aggressive caching, XFCE on FreeBSD takes advantage of ZFS by pooling more memory, so you can avoid making more syscalls.

Ram not used is ram you're wasting. Also processes eat different amounts of ram in different OSs. Some cache more, some share more resources, but in general if you see a lot of ram bein used, it means things are more probable to load from cache rather than disk.
Only change i would do that you probably haven't is setting the swappiness to 10.

My hostname was navi at some point. Anyway, I chose Void Linux because this is an old laptop that I kept as a backup, so I wanted something lightweight. I also wanted to avoid systemd because I'm an init user like that. Runit turned out to be pretty nice to work with.
i3 was my first tiling WM. I loved the feel of it so I kept it. I've been testing other even lighter WMs because I'm a freak about reducing RAM usage (Firefox is the worst), but I haven't migrated yet.
Ever since my main laptop died, I've been using this for college stuff, programming, and sometimes gaming.

The desktops today are less imaginative, less diverse, less attractive, and less personal. A trend in old ricing scene might be an icon pack or a font. There is only one real trend in new ricing scene, and it's barely ricing your desktop. Attention to detail and originality has been found to be pretentious, so you can be a lazy and unskilled and have an ugly boring desktop and still post. The fact that 90%+ of customized desktops in 2025 aren't using a 4k monitor (which costs less than $200) indicates just how over it is.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST,Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.)

You can edit the config of neofetch. I can't really recommend Nobara unless you have an all AMD build, it screws up two particular things all the time: Nvidia and system delivery of package updates. It's only use is to setup a Fedora variant for quick gaming.

Debatable, it has a place for those who want something GTK based and a middle ground between MATE and other DEs, but I do think it's on borrowed time. The GNOME team has been driving the GTK toolkit off a bridge and there's only so much that can be done to mitigate the GNOME-ification of the entire GTK toolkit.

I plan on getting a tablet with a desktop mode next time now that I know I like them enough to replace my actual computers. I still have a laptop that I love using from time to time, especially for those few tasks that just function better on a proper computer OS.
>>86339
I don't really mind the default applications, I've disabled or unninstalled most bloat I wouldn't use, but those applications I knew I'd use? I preferred to just keep them instead of going for an alternative, a part of me would've preferred to do what you said, I do run Linux on my laptop for that very reason, but Android and One UI are sort of cyberhumped by default, so I figured it wasn't worth trying to make them feel more like a proper FOSS Linux device since I'll never really get that on Android and One UI.
Anyways, it works well enough for my use case currently.

I have XFCE, and I'd like to use it, although I don't know if it works in XFCE (since everyone I've seen that uses it uses Cinnamon).
Those who have XFCE use xfce-winxp-tc (like >>85438, i think), but it's not a theme; it's more of an "XP emulation." The taskbar isn't the original one; you have to install an additional one that emulates XP, which looks broken and generally looks bad.

Many window managers including some tiling ones have a command line argument '--replace' (or '-r', check in the manual of a particular WM), which replaces the current running WM with this one. And xfce session makes the change persistent without any additional steps, if I remember correctly.
But it's totally possible to make xfce keyboard-friendly without a tiling WM. This article has some good points about it (although I don't completely agree with the author):

Actually, if truth is to be spoken, a lot of normal people dislike using linux while doing their job, because the UI is soykafty (always has been). Back when Windows 7 was meta, Linux basically had no excuses. But nowadays people hate Windows 10/11 as much as they hate Linux. Windows 11 arguably receives more hate. It's not Linux Desktop's achievement. It's just Windows declining in quality to Linux Desktop's level in terms of (G)UI. It's really too complicated for average users (/=retards, the world is larger than your OS). It's a shame that the trannies who develop Linux Deskop right now are the same moronic Indians who ruined Windows 7.

I understand what you mean, the people I know use gnome and kde without modification most of the time, my teachers say they use it because it's a good tool, at work they use it because it's stable, I think everyone has their reasons in the end.
The question of Windows 7 and Windows in general, I agree, I think that sometimes modernization is overdone.

GNOME and KDE are very counter productive. They are also large and very unstable. They also harm ecosystem by fostering moronic programming. They are only popular because the Big Daddy advertises them and makes them default on his Big Distros. If a distro just shipped a decent configuration of i3+picom & openbox+picom, usability -wise it would surpass both GNOME and KDE. And it's piss easy to configure either.
>>87680
Outside of coreutils and some other critical tools designed by competent people (like smartd, bcron, openntpd etc you get what I mean), linux tooling is just different flavors of dogshit, both CLI- and API-wide.

corporate unix desktops just weren't made with security in mind before. no one expected a $ 100k SGI machine to be used as a consumer computer facing wide area network, they expected it to be in a LAN corporate office behind firewalls. cde in particular is made to be used on a LAN office with other cde desktops with all the (vulnerable) communication protocols running in the background by default. they tried.

I enjoy so many of your desktops. Keep up the good work Lain.
I especially like the BSD ones.
I am sharing my desktop, my desktop, and my desk top. As well as a closeup of the thing that allows us to connect our physical bodies to the wired via the tips of our fingers. Brain, fingers, keyboard, wired. Something like that- my particular apparatus is more than meets the eye. Unassuming but the only one of it's exact form in the entire world. Not another soul alive or dead is using a Pro 2 with the specific variation of domes, sliders, PCB, keycaps contained within this vessel here, and if there was it's highly unlikely they could see the beauty in this particular arrangement.
I like to use Linux from the framebuffer via a terminal multiplexer, in my preference Tmux, as my default for using the computer. Most any basic tasks that I use the computer for can be done this way, from reading digital textbooks or pdfs, to writing, programming, using emacs, playing dungeon crawl stone soup, managing files or other NAVIs, listening to music, browsing imageboards, calculators, and much more. And because it's all in a terminal I can SSH from other machines including my soyphone and pick up wherever I left off with all my programs. And of course, if I need to do something graphical I can just startx to launch my preferred window manager, of which i like dwm and awesomeWM the most so far, and don't really care for a DE on my personal devices to reduce unnecessary packages but have used a number of them previously.
As for my main NAVI - it fulfills a couple different usecases, mostly more intensive tasks that require more processing, networking, memory, storage, and so on, and has dedicated system drives for each usecase, represented on my front I/O as those blue LEDs, which has physical buttons to cut power to certain drives. One is W10 for Vidya, VMs, and proprietary software (I have a Simrig). One is qubesOS. Nearby I also have a small rpi4 with openmediavault on it for Jellyfin, and serves as a small NAS config / personal dropbox for moving specific or smaller sets of files between devices where immediately or directly transferring between them isn't ideal, or like stuff that I want to still be able to access when all my other machines are powered off.
There is a MicroTik Routerboard, and an old Riverbed Steelhead firewall with pfSense on it. Lain is no sysadmin but something a little more spiritual. When I was a little younger and didn't yet have a job I was still very much into computers and had made a mix-matched, hodge-podge setup with an old Viewsonic CRT my neighbor was getting rid of, and a cheap Dell tower that came with WinXP. At times we didn't have internet because my Mom didn't want it or pay for it, so I'd just get burned discs of various software from friends, and collect PC-dvds. I was really into ricing even back then, using rocketdock, and blackbox for windows (which i still use a version of today on the W10 drives. I played so much offline Battlefield 2142, Morrowind, Diablo 2, WC3, RCT2, et al. At friends houses though, I got a taste of the internet and it was so glorious of a feeling. Hours spent on that one chan..yknow the one.. Club Penguin, newgrounds, Quake, Vanilla WoW, CS, it was blowing my mind. I had to connect. I frequently went to a nearby Goodwill and on one such occasion got an old fuarrrked up Linksys WRT54G. I put dd-wrt on it at the time, and set it up as a WiFi adapter of sorts, allowing me first to connect to the neighbors, and eventually to our home router during periods when we had internet paid for. That feeling of flashing this custom software onto it, and making it into something that I could use to actually get online from my own bedroom finally, and succeeding. It's a feeling that I've felt so many times tinkering with things, trying to make a certain thing a reality, uncertain how but willing to fumble your way through one step at a time.
I guess I got a little carried away, and yet barely scratched the surface, but sometimes it's worth remembering how you got here. Especially in spite of how the spirit of everything changed so much when it comes to the wired and computers, seemingly fallen far from grace - corrupted and invasive, with soul remaining in fewer and fewer places over time - no longer a place to escape to but a place to escape from. I feel I still carry on that oldnet ethos that I had then, and if old me could see the setup I (still) play Diablo 2 from while listening to great music with headphones, (I) would be mind-blown. Especially when it comes to being able to finally play anything we could ever dream of playing back then, on pretty much one single machine.. and the speeds.. I'd faint. You're telling me downloads are over 1MB? Let alone in the hundreds to potentially thousands if you have the right setup.. I'd faint.

I used Bazzite before but at some point I was very depressed and wanted to make myself busy with something I don't do often. Also around that time systemd's skeletons in the closet popped up more visibly so when choosing between NixOS and Gentoo I decided to go for the latter, even though I like the idea of declarative configs and immutable OS. I also considered Guix, but after playing around in VM I realized it's unusable for me, even the most basic things require declaring tons of custom packages all by yourself. To be fair, I'm way more happy with Gentoo than I anticipated. It isn't exactly declarative, but it's very config driven in a very nice way. It isn't immutable, but it's probably the best you can get while being mutable and doing things traditional way. And this has plenty of its own benefits over immutability ofc.
