What is the most lain-ish way to rice your computer
Arisu Mizuki · 2025-03-02 14:31
I am looking for something that is good looking but not modern and simplistic. Right now I have the window manager (i3) and a background picture (shown in the picture attached), but I don't have a status bar or anything else.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

Fųcking newcomers. At least write a good OP and give more than some barebones half-baked context. This thread is now an instruction booklet for all lurkers and newcomers because you're so inept OP.
First, learn to search the catalog
https://lainchan.org/%CE%A9/res/61601.html
>>>61601
I have no idea if that's how you cross-link threads on lainchan, never learned that. Someone correct me on how if I'm wrong so OP's garbage fire actually yields something good.
Second, learn to search online.
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=riced+linux+desktops
r/unixporn exists and if you're gonna insult reddit just because it's reddit you're a fool. Gleam what good it can provide and superficial looks is something reddit and it's users are painfully good at.
4/wg/ has threads on custom desktops, it's a very slow board so you're not gonna deal with anything awful past all the pornbait threads.
Again, to be painfully clear, at least tell us you fųcking googled something and show us some results you think are cool.
OP is an idiot. Post things about how to actually be a good lainon in this thread. Formatting help, word filters, etc.

NsCDE
Or stumpwm. Don't need a bar

Here's how to rice your desktop:
1. Install
2. Confirm that defaults look good enough
3. Get to actual work

Jeez mate, I did look before, and I came up with nothing. If you read my post you would know I was looking for something specific and not just generic rices. 99% of rices are just generic modern simplistic trash.

Dont think so much about the computer, lain was using a tricked out version of basically macos. half of the aesthetic, dare I say more than half, is the computer and the room.

if you want something older i guess something like fvwm95 or fvwm2 with a custom config that you have to search somewhere or learn how the config works. maybe something like https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/bq3fg5/i3_lains_navi_90s_futurism/ (first image)
the other two images are from SGI IRIX 4dwm which is very similar to fvwm and has the motif toolkit (which you can kinda use on linux still but i can't really help since i use bsd) and the CDE from openvms which i think you can still compile but again, can't really help. i posted these because they're some of what unix desktops were when SEL was made.
i was actually able to have an exact setup like 4dwm with fvwm2 but i still have to think better about programs and gtk and stuff.
be sure to think about apps too. modern programs will require things like electron or gtk or qt which will probably contrast with your overall aesthetic if you chose to go for the images i posted. but for me it was kinda worth it since you also get to use less bloat in general.
if this isn't the kind of aesthetic you want then i would stick with i3 or dwm and take some configs from r/unixporn and make something more terminal stacking based with trasparency and colored fonts.
Have fun!

Seconding StumpWM and Lisp your way to whatever you want (hint, you can swank your emacs into the StumpWM runtime, and interactively build anything you want in a near-magical experience). Other good options are Awesome WM and Lua, or just DWM and C. Common thread is: don't be a cOnSuMeR. Stop "downloading" things, and start building soykaf. The best rice you will ever have is the one you build for yourself to fit yourself and your workflow. Drop the assumptions. It doesn't exist until you need it enough to build it. The aesthetic will be an emergent property of getting work done and optimizing your workflow. Unless by rice you just mean "colors pretty *-*", in which case go to /r/unixporn and mix and match whatever appeals to you from the infinite supermarket of configs and "customization", and be very unique, just like everyone else.

i always thought the way lain talked to her Navi was a distinctive part of the OS she used. https://github.com/omegaui/linux-voice-control is one of the tools to do that

forgot to post the specific 4dwm config for fvwm2 (not my github):

By the time your rice is finished you'll get over this phase.
That being said, if Lain was real, I doubt she'd the type of person to make herself the wallpaper and use a super-riced computer that she spent 10 hours on, she wouldn't care about the frontend and about the aesthetics as it's clear from the room that you can see in >>83760 's pic she cared more about the functionality rather than the looks.
>>83756
>superficial looks is something reddit and it's users are painfully good at.
Do you really think that? Most rices there have absolutely no diversity, 90% of the posts are hyprland/gnome/kde and about every rice uses the same blurry compositor with a nord/catpuccin/gruvbox theme and some anime wallpaper.

When you first start the series she's using a TAM with some kind of children's OS on it, just use a Chromebook if you want at least the first episode Lain experience, or just buy a Wal-Mart nigger laptop.
