thinkpad freezes

Lunch · 2025-02-19 09:18
I'm not so sure if I can simply walk in here demanding free tech support, but there aren't any other thinkpad threads up. I managed to find a used thinkpad t400 for a remarkebly good price online, but now the thing's acting weird. If the computer enters sleep mode, it freezes to a halt. Once this happens I can only turn it off. Another thing is that the disc compartment keeps opening randomly. Again, sorry if i'm spilling the soykaf or whatever, but could you guys at least point me into the right direction? It's your fault I fell for the thinkpad meme afterall.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

If your system is hibernating, and not using the light RAM based sleep, try increasing the swap file/partition size

>>83595 >If the computer enters sleep mode just don't enable sleep. mine has always fuarrrked up when sleeping.

Try updating your kernel. I had a similar issue recently that was caused by a faulty video driver.

Sleep problems sound like driver issues. You'd have to give more details like kernel and distro. Disc drive might be hardware related. I'd take it apart and give it a good cleaning.

I have a T420 and my Disk Drive will randomly eject as well. I have tried this and the issue remains consistant across multiple different DVD drives. In my office we have quite a few T420's laying around so I tried all the disk drives and they all randomly open. Not sure where this is stemming from as I have been able to replicate on Windows and Multiple Linux Distros

What distro are you running, kernel version, anything interesting in dmesg? Are you using the most recent firmware (BIOS) update? I've had crashes where I was able to get the magic sys rescue keys to work which helps determine WHAT might be failing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#Commands Keep in mind this is almost two decades old at this point, plenty of electrical gremlins could be going on too.

>>83611 I am using Arch. Kernel is 6.13.3-arch1-1. Couldn't find anything on dmesg. I made this thread before encountering the much more urgent problem of having the computer overheat and shutdown when multiple processes were running. I opened her up, cleaned everything and even replaced the thermal paste, but to no avail. I think it might be the battery's fault, so I ordered a new one. Maybe this is related to the freezing issue? It'd be nice if all I had to do was replace the battery and things would work out.
Splicer · 2025-02-21 11:35
Disregard that, I suck cocks. Both the freezing and the overheating still persists without the battery. Have I been scammed?
Yamaoto Toshi · 2025-02-21 13:50
fixed both the overheating and the freezing by changing the graphics device from discrete graphics to integrated graphics in the BIOS. Yay!!
Wintermute · 2025-02-21 18:35
>>83624 if it overheated in the first place it means thermals aren't exactly sane. you mentioned replacing the thermal paste but you should probably take a look at the fan if things ever get annoying again. godspeed

check out if you're not daisy-chaining 27 extension cords

Okay figuring out what's wrong with a computer is a diagnostic process. My tips... you want to run an exhaustive memory test using https://www.memtest86.com/ . You don't want to do a short test, you want to run an extensive test. I typically run the same test a few times... see how the computer performs as it gets hotter. Some issues only show themselves when the computer has been ran for a couple of days. If you get any errors I'd swap out the RAM for new sticks, the fastest RAM it will take and I would max it out. One caveat RAM testing as bad doesn't mean the RAM is bad in all cases, but it most likely does. If you haven't already you want to swap out the stock spinning rust mechanical hard drive for an SSD. As for the optical drive, I'd remove it an buy an adapter caddy and install a second hard disk. Really optical drives are dead and any real use it had has been replaced by USB sticks and external USB hard drives. I keep a DVD burner around in the event I want to burn CDs for old computers. If you're a broke student and drive a car that has a CD player, I guess you would want to keep the optical drive for burning CDs? Personally I would take the optical drive out. You can buy a new old stock optical drive for a ThinkPad for like 40 bucks.
