making my own linux distro

schizopup · 2025-02-14 08:23
Many hours, like 30 hours, was taken to create the installer and optimize the OS, but it actually runs well now. Runs well on a VM and will run even better on real hardware. Based on arch cause pacman is my go to. idk im just schizo talking rn, wanted to share it with yall. Thoughts on what I should add in terms of prebuilt packages and such?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

>>83512 Awesome, I was gonna create my own distro too because I need something like Alpine Linux, but that doesn't play nice with my hardware, so I am gonna try creating my own Linux based distro with musl, busybox, bearssl (or another tiny tls lib) to make it as secure and tiny as possible.

How is it your own distro if you just use the arch package manager and the arch kernel? https://linuxfromscratch.org/
schizopup · 2025-02-14 10:18
>>83512 its a fork, just as arco, artix, endeavoros, and such, is its own separate distro while still being arch in essence. I have done LFS, but building everything from source is not something worth it to me even if LFS is the "perfect" distro since it truly is your own. My goal was to have a distro that sets up everything the way i like from the getgo, including the packages, the pacman mirrors and custom repos, the same way another other arch based distro would

>>83515 >my goal was to have a distro that sets up everything the way I like from the getgo then I think you should do that. Install it, use it for a week, figure out what you like, what you miss, what you reconfigure, and change it to be more perfect. Then do a clean reinstall and use that.
schizopup · 2025-02-14 10:24
>>83516 Thats the plan yes, ill change it as I go. I reinstall arch alot and icba to redo all of the configs every time, this is just more streamline to me, eventually itll be an install that i can use in the long run without changing anything

It would be interesting to me to make a spin of Devuan, not really a distro. It would be a bare minimun version with nothing but console and some text files explaining how to add a wide variety of optional features, like good command line programs, or even a desktop if desired. Zero bloat, maximum flexibility and customization., as well as a good way to pass along the few things I know about Linux.
Eldon Tyrell · 2025-02-14 13:10
>>83519 So just Devuan ASCII?
Sipho Nkosi · 2025-02-14 14:12
>>83520 Command line only to begin with, then whatever a user might want o add.

well one day you'll probably either see him or not and then I guess youll know if youre talking about the planet then you can literally just look at it like any other planet in the solar system

>>83512 I'm planning on making a toy LFS distro soon! I think I will try to make a distro that uses Raven Ports or Pkgsrc. But I know enough that I realize that I shouldn't use Linux From Scratch as my daily driver (Because you need to maintain all packages yourself, and that too much work for single person. You would need a team to do it!) Honestly, I would just use Distrobox, if I needed something that's missing from Gentoo. It's very convenient and easy to use. I guess Bedrock Linux is another option but it's beta quality software at the moment and the dev says that you may need to reinstall to update to a future 1.0 stable version. I don't personally want to run it before there is version 1.0 release. >>83519 A minimal Debian or Devuan system is very easy to set up. Just don't select any software sets during tasksel screen in the installer, and disable both suggested and recommended packages in APT config before you install anything in your new system.
Nanashi No Gombe · 2025-02-16 12:43
>>83558 >too much work to update so update less often then, and support less software ;p >distrobox hey thats interesting Ive done this before but by hand >gentoo what do you like about gentoo except that its source based have you tried other source based distros? Source Mage ? Crux ? etc

So you're basically just making a setup script for arch but with your own branding? I don't see why would this be appealing to anybody knowledgeable on the instability of their package manager
Yet Another Lainon · 2025-02-17 01:04
>>83558 There was a time when you could disable recommends and just have a less bloated system. If you do it these days, you will get a broken system before long, because devs sometimes mark things as recommends when they're actually necessary for packages to work at all.
Yu-ichi · 2025-02-17 05:39
>>83568 Just don't install gnome
Zero Cool · 2025-02-17 09:10
>>83571 I haven't used Gnome since Gnome3 came out. The days when you could disable recommends without causing big problems are long gone.
schizopup · 2025-02-17 10:02
>>83566 No, it uses my own kernel as well, the only thing is the package manager, but at the moment its still a work in progress
Jim Hilger · 2025-02-17 10:21
>>83575 what exactly broke for you with disabled recommends?i can't imagine urxvt-unicode breaking because of that, or X11 or i3wm, and i don't care for anything else.
