What are some projects you did using a raspberry pi?
I just got one and I'm still learning but I would love to hear what other Lainons did.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

Port forward and host something? Why is it so common for people to buy Pis specifically and have no idea what to do with them?
Apoc · 2025-01-21 07:04
I host a lot of stuff on a few Pi's
* vsftpd to access files (sftp for non-LAN)
* dropbear for ssh access
* git daemon
* stagit static files powered by a static webserver
* Tor snowflake-proxy
* Nostr relay
* Soju IRC bouncer
* Ergo for private IRC network
* Rsync for easy incremental snapshots
* Pihole
* Ollama web API with some small models
Looking into hosting a Monero and I2p nodes too.

Mostly because I got a few because they were very cheap, and I didn't want a Pi 4 just to have it host a Pihole.

You could make a fake Commodore 64 look-a-like emulator computer (look into RetroPie). Or make a portable DIY laptop? There are multiple example projects online.
You will need:
- Raspberry Pi or a clone (like BananaPi)
- SD card
- a small suitcase or something
- keyboard & one of those ergonomic ball mice things/a touchpad (some keyboard have one integrated)
- small LCD screen
- a battery
- Did I miss anything?
Or you could make a weather station, I think? Or you could use it to host a personal onion website on Tor. I think you might be able to turn it into a NAS if you somehow manage to connect SATA HDDs on it? (Or maybe you could use a powered USB hub?) I have no idea how reliable it would be, however! You probably want to get UPS, too!

check out https://pivpn.io
otherwise, just throw a usb <-> sata adapter and a SSD in the back, host some media. You could use qbittorrent-nox as for a torrent client with a web interface.

Run an i2p router. I frequently move with my laptop so it's not practical to use i2p directly. Instead, I have a raspberry-pi that I connect to through SSH. I used to have a pi3 on which i2p would frequently crash (couldn't figure out why, it didn't OOM), but it works very well on a pi4. There's a hdd connected to it for torrents too.

I think >>83165 and >>83333 have listed most of the more practical uses. Besides that, you could use it as a seedbox for torrenting:
- Set up transmission-remote or a torrent client of your choice with a VPN
- Use an external HDD (or two in Raid 1, if you like) connected via USB
- Set up a web interface and RSS feeds to automatically pull content
Or as a Wireguard VPN for accessing services remotely:

(Be sure to read any scripts you download before running them as sudo. Put them into an AI model and ask it to explain what's happening if needed)

Or as a Bitwarden-style password manager with Vaultwarden:

Is running Tor snowflake-proxy at home a good idea? Would it cause trouble with law enforcement or my ISP?

snowflakes are entry nodes so there shouldnt be trouble with law enforcement. but if you ISP doesnt like tor, you could run into trouble.

Would hosting a node help Monero or I2p network?

Not sure what you mean here, but
> Would hosting a node help [the] Monero network?
Yes. It helps decentralize the network, and as a bonus it helps prevent having your transactions traced (to some extent):

> Would hosting a node help [the] I2P network?
I suppose so. Another node on the network certainly couldn't hurt (unless it's malicious). I'm not familiar with I2P but it seems simple enough to run a node on the network:

> Would hosting a node help?
I can't imagine how it wouldn't (unless it's malicious). If you have the bandwidth and hardware and you're motivated to do so, go for it.
