I mistakenly converted a bunch of images to h265 video (1 frame each). Is there a way to get them back to an image format, without quality loss, and with a similar filesize? The images were converted with ffmpeg -y -i "example.png" -c:v libx265 -crf 18 -f matroska "example.mkv" The stream infos are as such: $ ffmpeg -i "example.mkv" Input #0, matroska, webm, from '/media/sda1/boorus/00/00c7cead812fdb6ef27aac602b0ae5fc.png': Metadata: ENCODER : Lavf61.7.100 Duration: 00:00:00.04, bitrate: 19079 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: hevc (Rext), gbrp(pc, gbr/unknown/unknown, progressive), 618x810, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 1k tbn Metadata: ENCODER : Lavc61.19.100 libx265 DURATION : 00:00:00.040000000 I tried extracting the first (only) frame with variants of ffmpeg -i "example.mkv" -vframes 1 "example.png" But the output file is either much bigger (>2x) or with ugly artifacts (depending on the output format/options). Basically, I'm asking what image formats can be used to store an hevc keyframe, and how to get ffmpeg to copy the frame.
William Holtzer · 2025-01-08 05:51
>>82965 The format you're looking for is HEIF. ffmpeg can handle it, but you'll most likely need to compile it yourself with libheif.

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but how much privacy do I have when I use Yandex as my browser and main service with Mullvad? Can Yandex track down my activities on other browsers, or am I safe as long as I use Mullvad Browser for anonymity?

"That's tied to the physical hardware of the device and can't easily be changed. https://www.theregister.com/2020/02/27/edge_and_yandex_browser_privacy_shame/ Yandex Browser tracking persists across OS reinstalls, never mind turning on a VPN. >Can Yandex track down my activities on other browsers Technically it can but who knows if it does. That's why proprietary should only be used sandboxed in a VM or not at all.

>>83029 Just use Firefox or Chromium. >https://digdeeper.club/articles/browsers.xhtml You should also install uBlock Origin + NoScript (or look into uMatrix?). You should also use Tor Browser but only for browsing Tor. >how much privacy do I have when I use Yandex as my browser Your browser can track stuff even if you use a VPN. Also, there is no reason to use any of the Chromium reskins (like Yandex Browser, Edge or Google Chrome) because it's just Chromium under the hood but it can have malicious features added on top of it. If it's proprietary software, you have no way to find out whether this is the case or not. But you gain nothing over vanilla Chromium. The only Chromium reskins that make sense are Brave and Ungoogled-Chromium. Brave makes sense because there are easy pre-compiled binaries available for Windoze. On the other hand, Ungoogled-Chromium has better defaults for privacy vs Chromium. Also note that while Brave is seemingly also pretty good (?) but they have done some shady cryptocurrency stuff in the past that makes me pretty suspicious. I would install both Firefox and Chromium and test both.

It's basically a SDR, so you get access to full spectrum (1MHz-6GHz if I recall correctly), while flipper has just the most popular bands. It lacks few features that flipper has like firmware flashing, but most people use dedicated programmers for that anyway.

I'm trying to install Nitrux, but during the live USB installation, the screen keeps repeatedly going black for 1 second every 2 seconds; imagine someone constantly turning my PC screen on and off. I've searched everywhere, and I heard nobody having the same problem. Theoretically, I might still be able to continue the installation even with the screen flickering like that, but I fear the problem might persist even after the OS is fully installed. What could cause this and wtf am I supposed to do?

I would personally install Kubuntu instead because Nitrux is based on Debian. Or if you want, you could do "expert installation" of Debian and select KDE desktop during the installation process. Then upgrade to Debian testing to make it usable. Then you can get the kernel that they are using from https://liquorix.net If you are interested in AppImages, you can just use them on any distro. Just download them from https://appimage.github.io/apps/ or somewhere else. Or if you want an immutable distro, you could just install Fedora Kinoite (it's Silverblue but with KDE instead): >https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/kinoite/

Why wouldn't you just install Debian Testing to begin with? Also, why not just install Debian Stable and enable backports repo? You get the Testing packages as they become stable, i.e. most of the benefits with little of the risk. Very recent kernels (and other packages) are usually available that way. >Then you can get the kernel that they are using from https://liquorix.net If you just want a liquorix kernel it might be easier to install MX Linux and install one from their repos. It's also generally not a recommended approach for production usage. The recommendation is to enable it globally and make exceptions for performance critical cases by running the application in a container / namespace without it enabled.

I don't know if there's a dedicated tutorial on attaching malware samples to an installer. If you want to modify existing crack installers to deploy some sort of malware, then I suggest you learn more about Windows API and methods (as I assume that's the platform you'll be writing malware for) and look into obfuscation techniques. What do you want your malware to do? Do you want to install ransomware, or spyware, or crypto miners? How do you want it to be deployed? What resistance do you expect? What version of Windows are you expecting the payload to run on? These are the questions you should probably answer when writing (or modifying) your malware. Mind you, I'm not a malware expert, or even a novice, just someone who likes reading about this sort of thing. Some resources off the top of my head: vxunderground.com - Lots of papers and malware samples twitter.com/vx-underground - Twitter account for above site. They have posted recommendations before about who to follow and how to learn. https://bible.malcore.io - "So you want to get started writing malware" https://www.unknowncheats.me - Video game cheat development forum, great resource for Windows internals https://crackmes.one - "A simple place where you can download crackmes to improve your reverse engineering skills" https://sizeof.cat/notes/1730020842/ - This person seems to know where you can find free copies of IDA Pro and Binary Ninja https://github.com/rshipp/awesome-malware-analysis - Obligatory GitHub list of resources to trawl through Best of luck. Would you consider posting your results when you finish?

>>83362 I understand that Matrix might be a better choice for 1-to-1 messaging for people, that you need to message about real life/important stuff, because you can text somebody, who is offline at the moment, but with group chats and for internet communities, IRC still is much better. Unlike IRC, Matrix is not really federated, because either need to run your own server or rely on matrix.org, but because the matrix.org instance is advertised so much, everyone just default to using that (even in tech-savvy circles this is the case, if you use matrix, you are basically using matrix.org). This probably stems from the fact, that running a matrix server is resource-intensive and is more tedious than IRC. It's not just the server, but also on the client side it's tangible, because Matrix is just very slow in general. Also bridges are probably more of a way to lure people into using Matrix, than actually bridging between two protocols. >>83365 The thing is is that to use IRC you just need to install a client or even just use the web client, but nobody forces you to make an account somewhere. And since IRC so simple, there are actually good clients (mIRC, AdiIRC, irssi, weechat, GoodWomanX and some others). With Matrix you either use Element, which is resource-intensive and slow, or you use some other client, which doesn't work as well as Element. >Ofc you cannot satisfy everyone but you can make it more accessible. Lainchan even has a webclient for IRC built into the website. It couldn't be more accessible if it tried to be. >Matrix is really great because you don't belong on just one server. It is kind of the case for Matrix though. Even if you don't use Matrix.org, your data is still sent there (and that kind of implies anyone uses anything else but matrix.org). They have basically a monopoly on it. With IRC, there is plenty of servers and Lainchan has it's own server, which just works.

>>83400 >What's the best way to make a local backup of my Android phone? The absolute best way to back up an android phone is to install a custom recovery like TWRP that allows you to make a nandroid backup. That backs up your whole system and data. However, TWRP is free, but it's only available for certain phones. Barring that, the best way to back up your phone locally is to use adb. You have to enable usb debugging on your phone to do this. Then get adb for your os. On Linux: "apt install adb". Then connect your phone to your pc via usb cable. Then type "adb devices" to see if your phone is detected. Then, on the phone, allow the connection. Then use some variant of the adb backup command such as: "adb backup -all". Type "man adb" for more information. https://twrp.me/Devices/ https://xdaforums.com/t/guide-full-phone-backup-without-unlock-or-root.1420351/

>>83400 Oh, I forgot to mention a third and very easy and intuitive way to back up your android phone locally. Just connect it to your pc via usb cable, browse it with a file manager like you would an external hard drive, and manually copy over whatever you want. You don't need adb for this. I think some versions of android might require special settings to allow this.

Why does everyone call Mesopotamia the cradle of civilization? I was browsing the copper age when I stumbled across information about the "Natufian" culture of the Jordan River area that existed around 10,000 BC (yes, four zeroes) and maybe even earlier. They built the city Jericho about 9,000 BC. This was thousands and thousand of years before Mesopotamia. WTF? And no, I'm not religious in any way.
Yuki Nagato · 2025-02-09 01:15
From a quick browse on Wikipedia, it seems the Natufian culture had no writing system in place. Pretty sure that disqualifies them from being considered a civilization. On the topic of linux documentation, recently I was watching Louis Rossman when he said something amusing. He is a linux advocate and just released a 12 hour privacy guide on stuff like setting up your own server with a foss alternative to google photos/drive, router with built in adblocking, and more. He's a repair technician and clearly not a retard. However, he had this to say: >One of the things that drives me insane about linux documentation is that when it comes to linux documentation, when people say "RTFM" what they are really saying is "eat soykaf and die" because the manual almost never works I imagine he was overstating things a bit, but I'm also sure what he said was founded on actual experience
Yamaoto Toshi · 2025-02-12 16:25
Speaking of Slackware, Volkerding (the guy who created it) was always super-helpful. The Slackware installer and Slackware itself were peppered with little hints here and there that were obviously intended for noobs. And when Gnome went nuts, and various other things went nuts, he just kicked them off Slackware. He and Linus Torvalds are the two coolest people in Linux IMO. Contrast that with the GNU creeps and the Arch creeps, and you have the two camps of Linux. Regarding manuals, some of them are obviously written by people challenged by language and human communication in general. That said, there are a few really good books on Linux.

It makes me question how that happens? recently my brightness controls now put my monitor's name on it (using linux with DCC/CI) it wasn't the case before, did it somehow update on its own or it was just a faulty bit flip or it rectified itself? >>83481 its not exactly wrong. man is the best documentation system i know of, that said its terrible. people -in general- do not like to write documentation, which means that for anything, but the largest systems its a treat to get one. manuals are also expected to be shipped with the software. this sometimes happens, sometimes not. its not rare that i have to read the manual for the software im currently running online for no apparent reason. the groff format is a bloody nightmare, everyone with 2 braincells is auto generating it from markdown, because God forbid standard manual readers should evolve. more of the same with gnu's info, except the reader is very unergonomic and now you have a second thing that you have to check for documentation. then there are systems which extract documentation from source code directly then present you with html. why html? fuarrrk you, thats why. not only are they clanky, but also useless most of the time. for example interpolate_quarks_for_void_monsters(a, b) will be documented as, you guessed it, "will interpolate quarks a and b for void monsters", with no explanation to what any of that means. and its not just a lack of links to the mentioned concepts, those concepts are defined no where. partially this is due to how dumbly these extractors are constructed. you have a finite list of fields you can describe, but if you would like to add something more freeform, you are shot. the only exception i found is Natural Docs, which seems to have the right idea, but is a nightmare to run on Linux. >the manual almost never works this is not wrong either. recently i reported a documentation bug regarding gnu readline (you know, this thing people have been using for 40 years). its only a few words to change, but thats also the difference between segfaulting and not. and, as it turns out, someone has reported the exact same thing 10 years ago, but the maintainers simply did not bother to patch it. tl;dr: soykaf's fuarrrked man

I'm very well aware that distrohopping is an illness of the weak, the unskilled and unemployed especially, painfully aware one might say, mostly due to those terms applying to me the most, I'm the most weak, unskilled and unemployed (Yes, you can form a comparative of unemployed), but despite me being content with my distribution of choice, I still see so many interesting operating systems to try out and I have a hard time resisting the urge. The distributions of my mortal cravings are Exherbo Linux and Slackware Linux. I feel like I missing out on something, never having used them. Slackware being the OG distribution, being a simple distribution and having it's own weird packaging system, meanwhile Ex Herbo is literally the sirens calling for me to surrender to their voices. "Ohh, Lainon, Ohh Lainon, Exherbo is for people who need their distribution to help them be productive", they say, implying tinkering with a stupid source-based distro will make me in any way more productive. So, do you think Exherbo will make me more productive and actually do stuff instead of tinkering with distros all day long? I fear it might make me waste two or three weeks with it and go back to normal after that. What's your experience with such distros (or maybe Exherbo in particular)?

If you are looking for a source-based distro, you really should use Gentoo because it has a long track record, large userbase and it has good support for everything. Source-based distros are more flexible but I don't think that they will magically make you more productive vs. Artix/Arch or Void or Debian/Devuan. They do give you more control over everything, though. This makes the initial installation process long but in my experience you don't need to go much after that. On Gentoo, I can just always update and everything will just work. I just need to select USE flags once (of course, I can tweak them later if I want/need to). If you want to be productive, you need to stop distro hopping and start doing stuff and learning new things.

I'm seeking feedback on my April Fool's prank, which may ruffle some feathers, so I need to be well-prepared against doxxing. My plan is to create a fake persona that doesn't share my interests, someone who embodies the character of a cocky, self-proclaimed dumb hacker with a penchant for leetspeak and Discord raids. People will likely assume this individual is real, but in reality, I'll be controlling their online presence. My top priority ideas are: 1. Utilize an Android virtual machine with spoofed GPS to create fake locations on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tinder. This is my most valuable resource. Additionally, generate fake Google Maps reviews of places I've never been to. 2. Rewrite all chat messages through ChatGPT in Tor to conceal my writing style. If that's not possible, I'll use NeuralDaredevil-8B-abliterated locally on my PC. Other ideas, listed from most useful to least: * Upload photos or documents with fake metadata on 4chan and use Exiftool to edit them, ensuring the same serial number across multiple images. * Generate a bio using ElfQrin (elfqrin.com/fakeid.php) and Fakenamegenerator (fakenamegenerator.com). * Censor my photo's face using AI-generated or other methods, storing the unedited version in metadata. * Create a public Google Drive document as if I'm sharing it with someone but was too lazy to limit access to their email alone. * Provide private details on smaller networks, such as board readers and Craigslist forums. Less obscure sites include Discord, Reddit, Hacker News, TikTok, dating platforms, and more. * Delete or alter content after the Wayback Machine caches it to create suspicion. * Block individuals who find information about my character on social media. * Maintain unique misspellings, grammatical errors, phrases, or bios across multiple platforms. Additional tactics: * Share a single link with tracking parameters across various fake personal accounts, saying "Look, I made Twitter/YouTube/Reddit/more mad." To make it more believable, post screenshots from my Android VM, as many apps force tracking parameters. Note that Twitter's tracking parameter contains an encoded user ID. * Obtain fake photos of my home from real estate listings or purchased property images. * Rush comments with intentional misspellings using Gofbid to appear intimidated or angry when "my cover" is blown. * Claim I use VPNs and privacy software recommended by YouTubers and that I learned OPSEC in Discord. * Make it seem like my haters found my fake personal email or phone number (public VoIP) through account recovery or contact exploitation. Which sites allow using a phone number without confirmation? Questions for further investigation: * Can I obtain an abandoned account from an old data breach for my sock puppet? * Are there alternative photo sources, such as Fiver or Vidi? Regarding my OPSEC, it's largely based on OSINT Techniques 10th edition by Mike Bazzell: * I'll create accounts at a public WiFi spot in my country or another to avoid VPN-blocking and use DOH if necessary. Then, I'll access those accounts from home using the same Mullvad server. * Use a high-entropy, randomly generated password for each account via KeepassXC. * All activities will be conducted within an Ubuntu and Android virtual machine with no personal information or activity. * Employ TOR with JavaScript disabled whenever possible; if not, use LibreWolf without extensions.

>>84055 I think you're taking the problem from the wrong end. First ask yourself what could be linked to you, and eliminate that. Putting a couple red herrings is probably a good idea, but so many of them would just make people more suspicious. I also wouldn't use chatgpt. For one, that's another online account, that would be linked to both your online persona and you (through the writing style). Additionally, it's a bit "too good" and would probably pick-up on your writing style. You could instead use a local model that wouldn't look as natural but would hide your writing style better. It would also make you sound a bit foreign or robotic, which could add character to your prank.

>>84057 I appreciate your feedback; it's the most thoughtful response I've received so far. >First ask yourself what could be linked to you, and eliminate that. Three years ago, I made significant strides towards anonymity. Through an array of search tools (Sherlock, SocialScan, Holehe, WhatsMyName, Blackbird, Maigret, etc.) and by scouring all three major search engines, URL searches, and email account recovery, I deleted approximately six accounts linked to my real identity. One of these revealed a connection between my real name and username, but it remained unindexed by search engines and the Wayback Machine, ensuring my privacy is preserved. Although there are still some accounts that could be eliminated for a fresh start, I'm hesitant due to nostalgia and fear of arousing suspicion should they disappear before my intended reveal. I've taken further measures: I've disconnected all usernames from my private email and replaced them with an alternate address, removed phone numbers in favor of authenticator apps, and updated all passwords to high-entropy standards, stored securely within a KeepassXC database. My private account remains distinct from my online persona. I've also scrutinized the data leaked through services like Have I Been Pwned? (HIBP) and found it lacking in severity, unable to link my private account to my username. Hudson Rock corroborated that my email isn't associated with stealer logs. Free people search engines proved ineffective due to my foreign status, precluding me from subscribing to paid services for opt-out purposes. I've additionally investigated archival sites like steamid.uk and uncovered no compromising information. While I'm certain I've implemented many more measures, the specifics evade me. Suffice it to say that I've applied every technique up to page 344 of OSINT Techniques 10th edition. >Putting a couple red herrings is probably a good idea, but so many of them would just make people more suspicious. To assist in selecting the most effective methods, I've listed my recollections. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for additional approaches? I'm also considering creating an alt account as an enemy, connecting dots and uncovering me. >You could instead use a local model that wouldn't look as natural but would hide your writing style better. It would also make you sound a bit foreign or robotic, which could add character to your prank. Currently, I employ NeuralDaredevil-8B-abliterated to rewrite texts in the style of others, such as Terry Davis. In my country, routers are connected directly trough the WAN port with RJ45. There is no modem involved. If I have a second router with DD-WRT that I can input my VPN provider's Wireguard config in, can I use this second router as a dedicated hardware VPN by just connecting its WAN port to one of the main router's LAN ports, and then plug whatever PC I want to tunnel through a VPN to one of the second router/VPN router's LAN ports? Or it's not that simple?

Did not understand a single word of this. >can I use this second router as a dedicated hardware VPN by just connecting its WAN port to one of the main router's LAN ports >by just connecting its WAN port to one of the main router's LAN ports Nope, won't work. >dd-wrt I have never done anything like that, it depends on how it sees its LAN ports, that is which interfaces are available to work with. Theoretically you can connect the supplementary router to the main router using LAN cable and then simply use DHCP to acquire an IP address. You can then make that address the default route and start wireguard. The other LAN ports will serve peers and give them IP addresses by DHCP too. What you do then depends, I don't know. Either you can somehow redirect the traffic to the wireguard interface, or simply act as a gateway, gotta figure that out on the actual hardware.
Dox · 2025-03-18 11:32
>>84074 Yes, plugging the WireGuard router's WAN into an upstream LAN port will work. The blue line is my home internet connection (a dangling RJ-45 cable). The red square is the router's WAN (Internet) port. The yellow squares are the LAN ports. (Both cheap routers have the same model number, but not the same "version", that's why I could only put DD-WRT on Router 2). The idea is that I have multiple devices, and I want to be able to plug some of my devices into Router 2/VPN Router, and some of my other devices into Router 1 (no VPN, direct connection through my home IP). >>84076 Thank you for pointing out the decryption speed issue. >>85654 Thanks for the help. I think I am explaining things terribly or misunderstanding you. >it'd be much better to have a central server hosted on the VPS to provide everything to everyone. This is the setup I am hoping to use. The only difference is that I want to provide them with a stream-in-progress, not with a file for them to d/l and play. As in, I would do something like: ffmpeg -i video.webm -v 0 -vcodec mpeg4 -f mpegts udp://127.0.0.1:20000 To stream my video to a set port on the VPS-localnetwork using whatever protocol works Then they would do something like: ffplay -i udp://vps:ip:20000 To pick up the stream at whatever point it happens to be at, and watch it play out. This sort of thing works locally, but doesn't seem to work when I try it on the VPS- not sure why... (VPS firewall is open to udp at the correct port, confirmed via doing other things over udp on the same port at different times) This synchronizes all of our viewing-experiences, since we are all receiving the same stream from the VPS (e.g: no worries about doing soykaf like 3... 2... 1... everybody hit play! now everybody pause! etc.) Aside on file-streaming-protocol: From the little I've read/understood, udp is not ideal for this since it doesn't guarantee delivery and most video formats rely on sequential-display (as in, information from frame 1 is used to build F2, F3, etc. until the next keyframe), so losing a frame here and there in-transfer will lead to gross artifacts. But I just want something that works, even poorly, before I go worrying over this sort of detail.

Never did much webdevelopment and decided to get my feet wet with hosting and IT by renting a vps and running a suite of tools for myself on it. I reached the email part and hit a wall because of pesky spam blocking. Are you only allowed to basically route your emails through cloudflare or gmail or other big tech companies now? Can't an honest user just host his own email server without the whole internet blacklisting his server because it's not "reputable" enough? I saw that if you wanted to build your "rep", you would have to start sending emails regularly slowly and gently build it up. All while running the risk of any domain thinking that you looked sketchy and blacklisting you for themselves and everyone else they know. Is this really the current state of email servers? This soykaf fuarrrking is like kicking dead whales down the beach.

Google has an iron grip on email. Sadly I think it's better this way, because 0.01% of people this hurt are self-hosters and 99.99% jeet spammers. I'm not sure how else you'd do away with spam and email abuse in the modern world. Same reason why so much of modern tech is locked-down (cloudflare, api key hell, kid-proofing in general etc). For every 1 grateful tech-minded person you have using flexible technology, you have 900 stupid people breaking it or 900 malevolent people exploiting it. >>85811 The other lainon suggestion of ftp is probably the easiest, which I think may what you want, but Id probably go with smb in file explorer, its as easy to use but modern version is encrypted. You have to share the file or folder on the win system to your LAN, then in linux mount the smb share, for ubuntu its folder app -> network then enter smb://<win ip>/filepathtoshare. These usually require passwords or keys though, but all can be scripted. Ssh/scp is the same way. Theres also the sn@pdr0p(.)n3t option I suggested but its in browser and graphical, so may be more difficult to script. Outside that theres numerous ways to script it raw. Somewhere in between writing raw tcp sockets and ready to go program, is n3tc@t but my only recommendation would be to install nm4p to get nc4t and save your self the MASSIVE headache of making nc binaries.

When i look up old anime torrents should i download the best quality / BD (for example 1080p) or something nearer what resolution TVs used to have (480p, 720p)? For example, i've seen people say that SEL is better on the older DVD release even though some say the BD release is "more true" to the original cels work. this is probably more suited to /vis/ but i don't want to make an entire thread

Random · 2025-04-27 14:39
>>85924 >i've seen people say that SEL is better on the older DVD release Nonsense and demonstrably false. Not a matter of opinion. In other cases there's more opinion involved. Like Haibane Renmei, Gankatsuo, and some others are digital upscales. So other than having better color quality and no mosquito noise and blocking so characteristic of MPEG2, it's debateable whether you wouldn't be better off realtime upscaling it yourself and having a file like 1/4 the size. For reference and credentialism, I wouldn't fluff myself up like some sort of big time expert, however I have gone through several anime frame by frame (for various reasons) and I did get into avisynth and go through and manually IVTC / repair some DVD quality stuff with YATTA back in the day. So what I'm saying is not strictly a superficial impression from just watching something. With Lain I don't agree with it at all. Some of the artwork and animation is in such a way that like Haibane Renmei it sort of becomes... I don't know, odd, globular. That was the case with Ergo Proxy as well, which had a better digital asset upscaling process. But overall with Lain the BDs are way better. Even the digital effects don't show much in the way of upscaling artifacts.
The Phantom Phreak · 2025-04-27 14:53
>>85936 Example. I've taken pic 2 and run it through an ESRGAN anti-aliasing model to fix the patchy line continuity. The result seems alright. If you look closely the foreground (Lain) seems to have faint haloing caused by some sort of sharpening filter perhaps. Definitely a sharpening process was used, which may have been part of what disrupted the outlines when applied following another upscaling process. The AA model somewhat amplified the sharpening artifacts. Second one was a vague attempt to diminish artifacts so they wouldn't be amplified. Shrug. The original wasn't bad anyway though. A lot of the time people are using a bitrate starved re-encode (coalgirls for Lain eg) to judge, rather than the native BDs. For the hell of it also, supposedly the UK NGE BDs were superior to R2 Japanese release, but I didn't see that much difference. Either way, download a remux or BDISO. Not someone's "release". Release culture was a mistake, but a necessary one, that formed due to the need to IVTC and patch up DVDs. No longer relevant.

The terminal is like kicking dead whales down the beach, MSYS2's mintty is way better. I don't like the file explorer period. Clunky and half baked. Thundar or whatever they named it. Don't even get me started on "Konsole". In terms of performance, perhaps security, and core architecture, it's better. In everything else, it's a downgrade. Win 7's way of doing things just works. I don't know why everything else seems inferior. And even the added features, like multiple / virtual desktops, seems to just be there to compensate for the fact that the core mechanics don't work. Can anyone offer some sane way of dealing with background noise for ffmpeg recordings? I've been trying different things, such as `-af "highpass=f=80, lowpass=f=8000"` and `afftdn`, `agate`, and I even tried SoX -- But it ends up sound robotic, not correct removing things, etc. Is there some low impact, low resource way to deal with background noise (i.e. fans, hums, etc.)? I know this is a retarded question because there's certain specifics involved, but I'd really rather just pass another ffmpeg flag to solve the problem than install some 80+ dependency software just to stop a hum.

does RMS unironically have no problem with fundamentally insecure tech like WWW or does he do this on purpose (e.g., implementing piles of job security horseshit such as the entirety of GNU) and hes just the OG e-grifter he never has any problem with any software, only the license of them >>86170 you sound new

so i'm having what seems to me a strange issue. torsocks works fine with some commands, but fails with others. in the past, it worked with those other commands tho. commands like sftp and curl. when i do torsocks with sftp, the error i get looks like this: 1746777921 ERROR torsocks[4240]: Connection refused to Tor SOCKS (in socks5_recv_connect_reply() at socks5.c:543) in the case of torsocks curl, the error is different: 1746778002 WARNING torsocks[4291]: [connect] Connection to a local address are denied since it might be a TCP DNS query to a local DNS server. Rejecting it for safety reasons. (in tsocks_connect() at connect.c:191) curl: (7) Failed to connect to localhost port 9050 after 0 ms: Couldn't connect to server i know for a fact that torsocks curl worked fine in the past. it was how i tested that tor was working. oh, yeah, but so like, torsocks works with some other commands. like my irc client. very strange

>>86243 I don't know about sftp. For curl, it's a case of the developer being stupid. https://github.com/curl/curl/discussions/11125 You can workaround it by telling it to use a proxy, but it won't work for other applications using curl. > curl -x 'socks5h://localhost:9050' ...

>>86243 idk about that error, i know that torsocks like proxychains is basically a hack and is known to have leaks and undefined behaviour. if you want to run things over tor securely you should look into a tor transparent proxy using your system's firewall i.e. nothing but tor is permitted so leaks can't happen. https://digdeeper.club/articles/darknetslack.xhtml (linux) nanochan has a guide for bsd somewhere. as for "if you should do this", well i used to but i kinda don't trust proxying everything through 3 unknown computers on the internet that change every 10 minutes anymore unless i really need it.

>>86246 https://github.com/heiher/hev-socks5-tunnel this. IIRC it works like a charm. Just make a virtual machine.

To run a tor node or really any kind of node is the only way to limit the bandwidth with a managed switch?

yo >>86243 here. i'm a dumbass. torsocks sftp error was on the server end. fixed by restarting the server. fugin misleading error message smh

Not quite a tech question, but more like a general one: Has anyone contacted the admin of FreeDNS/Afraid.org recently? The domain I added has been stuck on Stealth and I wanted to make it Shared so others can use the domain. I'm not a premium member either, it's just stuck like that. I contacted him via the provided email several months ago and haven't heard a response since. Is he alive or what?
