Peer-to-peer decentralized reddit alternative

Plebbitor · 2025-01-07 15:01
This project was created due to wanting to give control of communication and data back to the people. Social media is the lifeblood of the modern Internet, to censor someone is to cut them off from a significant part of society. Reddit/Facebook, even twitter have become a lot more corporatised in recent years, its interests no longer allign with users. Seedit is a selfhosted, opensource, adminless nonprofit social media. The github link is at the bottom. It runs on peer-to-peer . Surprisingly, its not been used like this before. Due to P2P it can scale to an infinite number of users for no cost. A community can be created by anyone with a button click. It can be owned by a single or group of people. The community is self hosted and can be seeded or backed up by anyone. The owner has full control over the community - can add moderators, delete posts, ban users, have requirements to post. The possibilities are limitless. Communities cannot be taken down. If an owner goes insane, seeders who have a copy of the community can simply recreate it and carry on as before. Seedit only hosts text. Images from google and other sites can be linked/embedded in posts. This fixes the issue of hosting any nefarious content. Devs are politically neutral and aim to foster a positive and non-toxic social media site. It has an official list of recomended subs, these will all be family friendly subs. Its easy to request to be added to the list to improve discoverability. Toxic subs cant be derezzed, Seedit is more accessible then Lemmy, mastodon due to not needing instances. Moderators can still ban ips or share ban lists of spammers if they so wish. all that matters is open sourcing social media. The democratic flow of accessible information is the most important thing. There's currently 3 fulltime devs. if it goes against the protocol principles, people can fork it. Seedit is a little slow to load but significant breakthroughs increasing the speed have been made. They are working out some bugs and will release in the coming weeks. They offer different UIs. Seedit is old Reddit, have a newReddit frontend. Plebchan which 4chan They intend to have an app, internet archive, a Facebook and Twitter and Lemmy frontend too. Choice is important. The backend/communities are shared across clients. Plebbit is not lemmy competitor Plebbit.com - Central website of Plebbit related information https://github.com/plebbit/seedit/releases - Plebbit desktop app. Plebbit.works - Centralised but fast version of Plebbit showcasing what its capable of. Plebbit.online - Stats on usage of Plebbit If you’re interested in starting a community or getting involved in the project, just reach out on Telegram at [contact details]. I’m happy to help, and I can even grab an ENS domain for you if you need one.

I read your whitepaper. When a user fails enough capchas, are they blocked only from the instance or from the entire network? I'm assuming the latter as you require capcha nodes to broadcast results. How do you mitigate rogue captcha nodes trying to ban specific users from the network?
Netrunner · 2025-01-07 15:58
Project number 1,000,000 to try "social media over bittorrent" it's funny that every time it happens the devs say it's makes their platforms more resilient, and yet none of them stand the test of time.

>>82944 each community is its own P2P swarm, just like each infohash/torrent in bittorrent is its own P2P swarm, so they are not blocked from the entire network, they are just blocked from the specific community. Just like a malicious spammy peer in bittorrent would only get blocked by peers of the specific torrents it tries to attack.
Plebbitor · 2025-01-07 16:25
>>82945 Time can't stop us this time. We already have the first few users using it and creating communities. When we get to 100 users. The snowball effect happens. There is a market for decentralised social media - see bluesky with 25m users. Our method is so novel, so simple, infinitely scaleable, its crazy its never been properly done.

>>82949 The reddit frontend definitely looks good. Though you meantion that you dont care about "old data", which sounds more 4chan than reddit
Elliot Alderson · 2025-01-08 01:32
>>82955 > Though you meantion that you dont care about "old data" It just means a blockchain isn't needed (it would actually make things far worse since it's so expensive to run a blockchain node), so it's actually the same as reddit. For example, if a subplebbit owner decides to remove some post from his subplebbit database, it will be removed.

can we get a frontend that doesn't require javascript or a desktop app || how hard would it be to write one following the API? my rule of thumb is if I can't use it on emacs I won't bother
The Fin · 2025-01-08 09:40
>>82952 >>82951 breadchan, bitchan (the defunct one based on bittorrent, not the other bitchan that uses bitmessage), peerchan (the defunct on based on webtorrent, not the other peerchan that uses peerbit), twister, peertweet, aether. You didn't even try to search for prior work before starting this did you? those are just ones that use torrenting as the backend. There are a lot more social media clones that use their own p2p protocol like diaspora friendica everything on activity pub and a billion other p2p or federated projects.

>Images from google and other sites can be linked/embedded in posts nice, me and google get to fingerprint and track everyone and change site content dynamically srsly, long term image hosting is crucial and needs to be solved maybe prevent bad images with mod approval >Toxic subs cant be derezzed based >if a peer or IP address relays too many captcha challenge requests >IP address >Moderators can still ban ips RIP anonymous posting, there should be a special but harder captcha for Tor and VPN mfs so it remains usable >but each community decides on their captcha service not having a sane default solution means everyone will fall back to cancer like google recaptcha overall nice effort if a bit halfassed >>82949 >There is a market for decentralised social media - see bluesky with 25m users bluesky is not really decentralized, it's a vc cash grab, has users because it's an app (not a protocol) pushed heavily as the lib twitter alternative, not because phoneposting normal people care about decentralization
Bob Arctor · 2025-04-15 07:55
Why bother with a p2p faux reddit if we keep the same upvoot ranking system? Once you remove it, why makes reddit so special that cannot be done with any other forum/ib iteration?
Jet Black · 2025-04-15 23:47
Decentralized social networks don't work because resources to run them aren't cheap and you need a main stakeholder to foot the bill. This is why Mastodon will never make it. You know what the CEO said? They want to survive on donations, DONATIONS. The fuarrrking nerve.
Erik Johansson · 2025-04-17 17:35

I'm eager to see a P2P project take off since that's what I believe the internet should be anyways. But why copy the most toxic mechanism for it? The best use of this I've seen are exclusively for STEM focused "communities" or sites like stack overflow. Anything else devolves into an ideological cesspool where users comb through each other's complete post history as a basis for their arguments and pride themselves on their updoots. And now they also got your IP as well? Don't want to be a downer but I rather stick with niche anime image boards. Enforced consensus mechanisms is the reason we need to get away from centralized solutions in the first place. Sorry, again I like the attempt but unless that problem is solved I just don't see anything P2P being picked up by the enthusiast part of the adaption curve. Like, what's your strategy for handling incoming requests to a node or participant for instance? But thanks for reminding me to complete my own shot at it eventually! The feds hate any true decentralized solution and the internet is soykaftyfied on purpose to discourage it. >>85036 Aside from being implemented in Ruby so the dev team can be inclusive, it is not truly decentralized, but federated. This has some drawbacks, particularly the cost of hosting and running poorly optimized server software. But it has the advantage that it at least is usable. True P2P has the problem of message propagation and needing to flood fill, at least to some degree. The cost is distributed to the users but performance and security is diminished. Unless of course someone figures out a better way of dealing with this. And then also publish an app to the mobile stores to make it popular without getting murked by the glowies or be handled like the telegram guy on his holiday trip to France.
