What do you think about the concept of internet based on C/C++ programs running in console communicating with each other over TCP/IP instead of opening a bunch of sites in web browsers?
For example instead opening lots of tabs in web browser you just run ./lainchan or install onlineshop using package manager and type in terminal onlineshop.
Put in another way, instead of using browser you just use tiling wm + urxvt, or tmux or something other you like to interact with other computers in the Internet

Something like gopher, but in the terminal?
Seems cool, but why not write websites that are accessible by CLI only browsers? No need to reinvent the wheel, if only a handful of internet nerds are gonna be using it

I mean just replacing browser with bunch of tabs by for example urxvt + tmux + cli programs communicating with each other through tcp/ip

So you want a closed off dark-web ish network that acts like HTTP, but works over plain TCP and all clients are written in C/C++?
May I ask why lol?

This was common on DOS pre-web. For example, you would download a TUI program that you could use to order pizza from one or a few different services. It's not a very secure approach though, as you have to trust each binary. With text formats, it's easier to look under the hood and perform static analysis. A better approach for what you are going for would be to create a minimal lisp subset that ships a DOM with instructions for building TUI graphics using ncurses or something like that.

Terminals are a minefield because of control chars, see >>>/sec/24812
You would need to design a new kind of special purpose terminal emulator. Gopher is much more sane. If you want something more advanced, you could use Gemini. I suggest installing Lynx/sacc/gopherus and amfora.

there are already a multitude pf terminal-based programs for accessing the internet and other forms of telecommunication: mutt, links2, gopher, putty, sftp, curl, minicom...

A fellow Rajesh low on RAM? Relatable.
Just talk with AI models through API. They know everything. Downgrading web is a self-defeating enterprise, never going to work even for "enthusiasts".

how about ncurses terminal graphics based internet sites? doable?
Case · 2024-12-26 05:09
It's easily doable of course. Name of the game is interoperability, in practice this would mean all services offering a stable HTTP API. People can then build whatever apps they want, CLI, TUI, GUI, web. In a smarter world everything (chat, banking, webshop, government, dating, gambling, tiktok, video games) would work like this, through open protocols and APIs.
Slop services don't document or support their own APIs because they have to shove ads in your face which they can't through an API, and they want their surveillance tentacles deep inside your device. They can afford to do this because most people (cattle) couldn't care less about the absolute state of computing.
