lets discuss dumbfuck UI design have the misfortune to witness the 37th gnome or kde distro there is a on/off switch instead of just being a simple rectangle button (like how windows solved it in 3.1 and 9x etc probably other OSs decades before), it's a "button" that slides left and right and you can grab it and slide it around then you go to toggle it on and off (which is a common thing that is done in computers) but then it thinks its grabbed because you clicked to slow or something and it slides slightly to the side when you're not expecting it because you haven't mastered this pointless UI yet and didn't know it works that way when it's sliding is it turning on and off? or is it only when you release the mouse. when it slides partially to the left or right does that register? theres NO WAY TO KNOW unlike what cum guzzling "UX" afficionados preach (UI should be self-teaching)

Classic Windows 9x, XP UI was perfect. You can tell at a glance, without hovering, with zero interaction, what every single element is, what their state is, which one is focused, where grabby edges, corners are, despite low resolution. Elements laid out compactly, designed for a precision mouse pointer, not inaccurate touch screens. A decade of advancement later you can't tell a radio button from a checkbox. Bravo webshitters, phonetards, bravo Apple: https://tonsky.me/blog/checkbox/ The brave new world of: >NO WAY TO KNOW Decent UI will live on in some professional software, used and made by smart people. Everything that the masses are expected to use will be dragged down to the average person's level of profound retardation. Complexity, intricacy, options confuse the user. Don't have more than three interactive elements on a screen anon, that might confuse the user. Building sane, fast alternative clients to social media, banking, dating, webshop, etc silos is not allowed, God forbid you leave out all those client-side ad and surveillance routines, on top of the server-side ones. It would be fine if the touchscreen no-keyboard design language was contained on phones, but it tends to bleed into all software. Gnome is a weird one for example, it's not web software, and yet it's more tablet touch UI than PC UI, despite mostly running on PCs.

>>80785 I don't like the design either, but for me every desktop environment other than gnome just works like soykaf. Every other one feels like I'm using remote desktop to access it lol. Even kde feels super sluggish, things like visibly delayed mouse movement or typing input, not catching click, icons not loading etc. so I end up using gnome anyways.

XFCE + QT just works. Everything else is garbage unless you use NsCDE or just good ol CDE
Tank · 2024-10-17 09:44
>>80786 Maybe it's baby duck syndrome but I hate any desktop environment that doesn't more or less work like a windows 7. I have no idea why you think gnome is fast, XFCE (or any lightweight desktop) blows it out of the water.

There's nothing to discuss. They take over ecosystem, then they'll turn it into corporate soykaf and we won't have freedom even on linux.

>>80788 >le baby duck syndrome I don't know why people love to bring up this condition a lot. Most people who are obsessed with these old Windows systems today are literal children who never grew up with them. There's nobody asking for continued support of these systems other than young gen-z retards that are on smartphones 24/7 and are the same ones who all kinds of media and aesthetics from the 2000s. >please make a better post go fuarrrk yourself

>>80789 >we won't have freedom even on linux Problem with Linux is that you cannot use it without non-free firmware.
Nguoi La · 2024-10-17 10:56
>>80790 >Most people who are obsessed with these old Windows systems today are literal children who never grew up with them Are you retarded. I've used windows 7 for 14+ years and it's still by far the cleanest OS out there. If it had linux tier CLI support, it would blow the fuarrrk out of every extant "modern" OS
Apoc · 2024-10-17 11:01
>>80791 firmware freedom is impossible because hardware has never been open and likely will never be. but we did have software freedom at some point, it is significantly easier to achieve (can't manufacture GPUs in a basement, but can write plenty of good code there). and now we'll gonna loose even that. just imagine how loud they'll laugh at us. completely FLOSS licensed software with absolutely zero factual freedom.

>>80793 I'm not just talking about Windows 7. There are many of these young retards who have this fake and gay "nostalgia" for systems like Windows XP despite being born way after 2007 or so and are, to this day, demanding continued support for it from every software company like Steam and fuarrrking Discord.
Roger Pollack · 2024-10-17 11:49
>>80795 Windows XP isn't worth supporting, but they really didn't need to kill Windows 7. Windows 10 is inferior and Windows 11 is just a pure abomination.
Yuki Nagato · 2024-10-17 11:52
Though to be honest Windows 7 has terrible UI customization options. Getting fonts to be the right size feels like rough buttfuck. It wasn't a problem back in the day, when not everybody had even a 1280x720 display, but with modern 1080p displays it becomes a problem. I don't count it as a fault of Windows 7 though, because the problem became notorious when the OS started to become obsolete.
Drifter · 2024-10-17 19:43
>>80795 the same thing happened with 2000s kids and the 90s. has real research been done on why this happens?
Cat Mother · 2024-10-19 04:37
>>80789 Hot take: if Linux did become the defacto desktop OS it would quickly be flooded with for-profit closed source software and a user base primarily interested in outcomes and ease of use, and not the OS itself. Traditional Linux users would become a marginalised minority and Linux would become the new Windows. Be careful what you wish for :) (by Twitter user @fjzeit)

>>80842 It's already happening. Systemd overtakes and does its utmost to break compatibility to force everyone to use systemd. GNOME are engineering insanely complicated ecosystem that is tightly integrated with systemd and 80% consists of unportable features literally nobody needs. Linux is no longer OS for enthusiasts, it's a corporate piece of soykaf and having things your ways becomes harder with each year.
