4chan censorship
John Titor · 2024-10-03 03:09
Well, it finally happened. 4chan added a form of hidden, automatic censorship and they're banning anyone who mentions it sitewide. Every thread about this is getting deleted, and when I posted it in a small corner of /lit/ I got a 3-day ban for trolling (who am I trolling exactly???) in under 2 minutes. 4chan is now out-and-out pro censorship and it's only going to get worse from here. The clearnet is over(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. This is also a borderline Rule 6 violation in spirit if not by letter of the rule.)
Elliot Alderson · 2024-10-03 03:55
Literally who cares about 4chan in 2024? And since when was 4chan ever an anti-censorship free speech activism site? 4chan admin is notoriously lazy, corrupt, and incompetent and have been destroying the site for years allowing it to turn into a degenerate right wing hugbox full of cookie cutter memes, repetitive soykafposts, and spiritual homosexuality. Go complain about your ban elsewhere and maybe take this moment to quit 4chan and the internet entirely.
P.S. If your idea of free speech is the ability to spam niggerglitterboy 3x in the mirror then you clearly have brainworms. You are not a victim of censorship. Real censorship is having a cruise missile land on your house for criticizing Obomber or loosing your job because you disagree with the suits.

>You are not a victim of censorship. Real censorship is having a cruise missile land on your house for criticizing Obomber or loosing your job because you disagree with the suits.
The question is why do you gladly accept shadowbanning and info suppression?
If you're anti-censorship you should be disgusted at stuff like that. It doesn't matter -why- the line is being crossed, all that matters is they're crossing it. Of course no one is complaining because "it's just slurs". Well tomorrow it won't be slurs! It'll be any opinion or idea they deem controversial. Give them an inch and they take a mile. Are they within their full rights to do so? Sure. But 4chan is one of the only big sites that was ostensibly anti-censorship and free speech. Now all we have left is twitter.
10 years ago, this was common sense. But what I really suspect is, even on Lainchan, anti-censorship is dying. "Censorship is totally okay" they think "so long as it's used on my enemies".

not that anon, but I will say that they have already been censoring people on 4chan for years now. And, not just that, the userbase fuarrrking is like kicking dead whales down the beach, if you try to make a thread about an issue that actually matters, nobody pays attention. It's all just fuarrrking identity politics, and election bullshit, and "happenings" recent events media sensationalism. Worthless discussions about a milieu of events that provide a quick dopamine release to the people involved in the discussion. Their idiotic apathy is as good as censorship. I tried at one point, once I finally grew out of that sewer of a site, to inform people on /g/ about Big Tech and the U.S. Gov technologically enslaving the world, and how using spyware OSes and browsers and other software contributes to that, nobody listened, or they would argue while having nothing of substance to retort with. And you're making posts on /lit/ while saying "nigger"? What kind of post containing the word nigger will further a meaningful, deep discussion about a literary subject? Almost none, unless you're discussing slavery or something. Quit using that site it has been ridden with bots and federal agents for years waging psychological warfare against retarded right wingers in order to victimize them so they galvanize to controlled opposition leaders like Donald Trump and Elon Musk, problem reaction solution learn Hegelian Dialectics cunt, sugma.

This is just a dumb response. I don't post those words, I'm not racist, and I never implied that I did. I'm simply anti-censorship. I thought Lainchan would be more pro-censorship since you care about privacy, but apparently you guys are just like normal people who see no issue with it so long as it's not actively being used against you. If you ever get censored for trying to spread information about privacy, just know that it will be your fault for defending this same tactic when it came to stuff you considered unimportant.

you missed the point entirely, if they begin censoring here and other places online that aren't soykafholes i will be upset. the difference is this place isnt an overt government honeypot used for psychological warfare. why do you give a fuarrrk about what 4chan does when the place has been a lost cause for years now? also what do you want people online to do about it? here's what you should do, stop using the fuarrrking site so they stop making money and have to quit censoring people, or shut down. you can't even visit 4chan without enabling javascript in your browser and completing captchas when using tor, that is censorship too, i dont see you bitching about it though.

They could easily spam this place with illegal material and shut it down once it becomes "inconvenient". Look at what happens to all the altchans out there. You don't have any idea how fragile the state of free speech online is. Maybe the site was filled with bots before, but at least normal posts weren't getting censored. They basically went mask off. Yeah the site has been trash for years, but this is a new low. I suppose you already viewed the site as fallen which is fair enough, but it's sad either way.

I think the best course of action is to find a pro palestinian faction, point out the glowniggers, then actually subvert their honeypot into an actual rebellion. Because Jews simply won't tolerate free speech now. It's not in their economical interest to promote free speech.

Lain, they are already censoring ideas they don't like and have been doing it for decades. Its why Chris Hedges was fired, why McCarthyism was a thing, ever heard of the Hayes Code? Look at what they did to Assange and Snowden, and the dozens of journalists they've killed. Jungle variety rightoids and Zionists have a tantrum over free speech, but unsurprisingly they only care about it when somebody takes away their right to spam childish insults. Your right that free speech is fragile but it died a long time ago, before the internet was a thing. And who cares what the hell 4chan does? It doesn't concern lainchan. A big site censors people? I mean, what did you expect? If you truly believed that site was a free speech utopia you were duped already.

How many times do people have to keep saying this. 4chan was NEVER about free speech. Moot was a tyrant banning anyone who crossed him. It was never a anti-censorship social activism site. It was just a silly imageboard for FYAD rejects and waps.
People need to stop idolizing 4chan. It's not some great downfall of the last bastion of free speech. Its just a soykafhole site run by a soykafhole team full of retarded monkeys that's probably just broken because they don't give a fuarrrk anymore and are just milking it for ad revenue. 4chan went to soykaf a decade ago. It was a fuarrrktonne better until 2013 that's for sure. Now it's just a specifically narrow marketing regime that murders people outright for criticizing marketing products.
Or what else did you think covid was? A real natural flu and not something made in a lab to terrifying the goys into gassing themselves?
No, I've already had enough damage from that last injection. That's all the info I needed.
I'm still sick btw. It's taken my 20s from me.
So this system should expect vigilance now. Actual vigilance. You've tried to kill me and you've been killing many members of my family to pay off your financial protection racket. All the heavily indebted, redundant, unemployed, old ones or "problematic ones". Even though many had the liquidity to look after themselves, theoretically.
Btw, this extermination racket has been doing this since 2013 and that's specifically when members of my family increasingly began to be ill. I think it's the medications, vaccinations and the altered approach of doctors in the field (per their duties "ethically" and their duties "financially") to push soykaf onto people that is causing this.
But that doesn't explain the targeting. I suspect foul play. Things like hacking of medical facilities and sabotage.

I don't see how you get the idea I'm upset because slurs are being censored. I'm upset because (1) they're implementing stealth censorship and (2) trying to prevent anyone from knowing about it. Obviously 4chan was never 'about' free speech, but it more or less operated that way for 20 years. You could talk about any subject if you ignored the trolls. Now that they're willing to censor & hide posts and lie to their users, the biggest free speech site on the internet is gone. Even if you view it as just a silly imageboard, people learned a lot there.
Yeah, this is probably no worse than GG. But it's definitely just as bad as GG, and no one is talking about it. This level of censorship is disgusting. I really don't want to look at that site again. It almost makes me wanna vomit

>(1) they're implementing stealth censorship and (2) trying to prevent anyone from knowing about it.
No they know damn well anons will seethe over it. That's clearly the goal.
And it's THAT that I hate.
The gamification.
The cartel controlling this planet want's their reset so they can purge masses of people without regard for them while stamping positive agenda for their side of the war in the process. They are a protection racket financially and that also means media wise.
They're just pitchforking anons through these indirect means nowadays. Clearly gookmoot is desperate for dough and has to cater to demands. Hence the stealth filters instead of warnings. He's been told to agitate and piss anons off.
He's pathetic. Because in my opinion that renders the forum redundant now. It's just low quality hobby board with no real criticism of soykaf now because real critics are most likely to say "nigger" nowadays. It's board culture too, so they're trying to isolate younger audiences from older audiences too in the process.
>glownigger
>newglitterboy
>sameglitterboy
Old 4chan culture is being isolated and purged slowly until the kids that most likely have the leisure time to browse the internet are most likely to be isolated from old users. I suspect ESG soykaf is the device firms are using to pressure people into clamping down on this soykaf. Probably a safety online initiative. I'll bet Hiro earned kickbacks for clamping down on "hate speech" and old users opinions. Merely warning is not enough. You have to gaslight them so hard they won't likely return and in a way that new users won't leave. So they chose this method.
Hiro needs to die. Honestly. He's truly a piece of soykaf the likes we should have expected since 2ch's warnings to us. He just does the bidding of his masters.
Also, this is likely due to the financial risk involved in promoting public protest. Capitalist society clearly no longer tolerates speech and likely censors it more than any regime before it, including nazi Germany and the USSR. Financial elites simply won't tolerate masses criticizing their leverage (their products) nor their system in general. It might get them killed.

Understand that this isn't new. You are acting shocked but you really shouldn't be. They've been lying and censoring their users for nearly a decade now. Honestly, I was well aware of Hiroyuki's shady business practices, but it was my understanding that he delegates control of the site entirely to RA and his mod team. So far it's been difficult to pin anything malicious on the 4chan staff, all they do is run soykafty ads and give the government whatever they request. This new thing is a MASSIVE step in the wrong direction. We had reasons before to suspect something shady going on with 4chan, but this is just confirmation of the direction they want to move in. Until now we had room for reasonable doubt. Now our fears are confirmed.
You wanna know what's happening? This is a trial run. They knew everyone would respond to this like >>80256 and >>80263 did.

Weak-willed people will often fool themselves into siding with their enemies if it means feeling like they're on the winning side of something. Who says? Why?
Freedom of speech is an enlightenment liberal concept. Its premise is that the unrestricted flow of knowledge is necessary for the advancement of humanity. Democracy is useless if authorities can just hide anything that contradicts their claims. Scientific progress is greatly slowed by limiting information. The whole reason we have freedom of speech in the first place is for education and learning. Can you learn from torture flicks and snuff films? Maybe if you're a criminologist or psychologist, but for most people it will only hurt them psychologically, while the free spread of pure information can only benefit mankind.

So you think censorship fine as long as the medium isn't spoken words? OP has no leg to stand on because 4chan is an internet forum and not an actual forum? Come now, that's a ridiculously narrow definition of "free speech". Absolute freedom of speech is a bad idea. Chans are like clubs. You don't let anyone walk in through the door. If they don't like it they should go to some other chan that better suits them. But at the same time, too much moderation leads to tyranny and suppression of opinion. You have to find the Goldilocks zone in the middle. "Absolute" freedom of speech as typically laid out isn't even a coherent concept. A message board on which everything is listed chronologically and nothing will ever be removed isn't really free of censorship, because what will be seen will be determined by who can spam the most effectively, which is just as much an exercise of power as moderator actions and can easily be a form of censorship.
We are not omniscient; there is always a filter determining what reaches our attention and what does not. The only question is what should that filter be, and what ideals should it be designed to support? Free expression is the ideal that if you think or feel something, and people would be interested to know what you think, that exchange should have a way to go through. Filters designed to support that ideal, I would argue are not censorship; censorship is when an authority takes their own ideas of what people should think and imposes that on them by force.

1/2 of this thread is people arguing over whether this is censorship or whether this is against free speech, but it really doesn't matter because it's still a clearly horrible moderation policy. It's really bad because it's part of a broad trend for moderation online to be more and more deceptive. Instead of just telling people they can't say nigger and banning them if they do, they pretend to let you say nigger but not actually have your posts go through. To make it worse they're banning people who point it out. Deceptive moderation like this is a really bad path to go down because it stops people from knowing what the rules actually are or how they're being enforced. If you can't tell why people not knowing how or when the rules are being enforced is a serious issue, you might just be retarded.

actually I take some this back. it's kind of a bad moderation practice but really not that bad. I just tried saying nigger nigger nigger on 4chan and it's very easy to tell that you're post doesn't go through. I don't know if they're really trying to trick people. The reason people are getting derezzed for pointing it out is probably just because of rule 8, though I don't know why OP got derezzed for rule 3 when pointing it out. /b/ doesn't have rule 8 and probably a few other boards don't have it too, so if you want you can still complain that you can't say "nigger nigger nigger" on 4chan.

There are still some good boards on 4chan that don't have any of that Nazi talk.
Boards like
- Retro Gaming (If you ignore some of the annoying console war users and brand wars)
- Cute boards (People mostly post images and get along)
- Wallpaper generals (Wallpapers, Barely any discussion)
- Travel (Little to no politics)
Every other board has their own issues besides Nazi soykafheads and their culture war bullshit. Issues like unfunny meme spammers, soyjak raids, twitter screenshots, people posting their faces to garner sympathy.

You have to draw the line somewhere. Personally, when you are literally lying to your users' face about how posting works, that's completely unacceptable. The relation established between user and staff goes out the window. And now they know they can have automatic censorship and people will say it's not that bad, they're going to crank up censorship even more, because the 4chan team totally adores censorship. I suggest everyone ITT to give that site up if you haven't already, and only patronize sites that respect you as a user. And just wait until the next scandal comes out and Hiroyuki is caught selling data again or whatever.

Even Lainchan has slowly started defacto banning VPN- and Torposting on mobile and desktop over the course of the past few years. A couple years ago I started getting more messages like "spam detected, post discarded" whenever I've tried to post, and now it's impossible to phonepost, it's quite worrisome to see this happen to a site I like engaging with. We'll see if even this post goes through, I guess.
I don't know if this is because there's been an influx of 4chan users since gookmoot's mod team started banning VPNs or if it's completely unrelated. Either way, don't like it.

Lainchan has seen better days but its not 4chan level bad yet. The obnoxious Nazi-adjacent reactionary culture warrior archetype has infested most of the internet anyway. They are just more obnoxious and loudmouthed on chans because they get to say nigger here. There are some sites that ban them immediately, but any site that has that rule has already failed.

Ah, yes. These were so /comfy/ at least in 2017-ish. I can't recall anything concrete about it, but I do still remember how all the anons life stories and world-buildings accompanied by the wallpapers made me feel (I think I might even still have some of those stored away on my other hard drive somewhere). I also liked /lit/, but I suppose I only liked the idea of liking it, because, honestly, I can't recall anything productive coming out of it. Same was for /r9k/. Really liked the secret santa threads and the creative stuff, but it slowly started turning into something vile once everyone became so needy, blackpilled and angsty over everything (and the eternal flammewars and political baits being waged on it probably didn't help either). Also the overboard, or /meta/, I guess it was, used to be a fun place, but it got soykafty very fast not too long after I stumbled upon it for some reason (in the span of a year or so, I think, the speed of which really amazed me). After throwing 4chan into the garbage bin, I really haven't been around any of them. Sure, I go watch p*rn and whenever a school-shooting or presidential candidate assassination attempt occurs, I go and try looking which of the fuarrrkers on /p*l/ did it. Other than that, overall I think it's just a bad place to visit these days.

I haven't been there in years but the last time I went there, it became infested with these smartphone kids posting their faces trying to get attention and they even have their own aliases. Every other thread there are anons talking about these attention whores like as if we're supposed to know who they are. It's just a discord circle-jerk board at this point and all the normal users on the internet know about that board too.

Regarding wallpaper general, I don't really find anyone talking there outside of those "tell-me-how-you-feel" threads which aren't really that bad. Though I find it that you cannot post threads about certain kinds of cultures like anarchism or communism because they attract these unhinged rightoids who sound so angry and end up derailing those threads. It's like the whole website is tailored to them and think that everyone else doesn't belong there. I guess that is true nowadays. Who would want to be in a site that is now recognized as a hotbed for right wing extremists.
Honestly, I want to quit 4ch but there isn't any good alternative that isn't dead. I don't like forums for a few reasons. One of them being that people sound so whiny, insincere, and pretend to be so friendly all the time. Another reason is that I don't like the cultures of people who use the internet today, like fur users or people who openly tell everyone that they're LGBT (not trying to be hateful), as they they insist on being part of every community and beg for validation.
Chan Siu Ming · 2024-10-06 12:29
I assume there will be an uptick in traffic here because of this.
Case in point: I have been a chan user since circa 2005. 2ch/5ch, 2channel, tinychan, 4chan, here... but, I admit, my goto was 4chan because of the traffic. The site has been largely overrun since 2015, especially with regard to political discussions, even with myriad client filters set up. Anyway, I had 2 of my max 2000-character effortposts deleted recently (occasionally I am bored and wish to effortpost, sue me). Apparently, it is because even though I was acting in good faith and providing solid, well-reasoned/articulated advice, I use some nono words in my normal diction. to be honest that's the final straw for me, whatever. They won't miss me, I will miss them a bit, though.
4chan was 99% garbage, but the 1% of gems on that site were things extremely difficult to find anywhere else. This place has been solid, there is just so much less traffic. Anyway, 4chan added that new post deletion and ban policy (I received another rangeblock) without stating it. No "reformat your post" or "can't use these words anymore"... word-filters were already annoying server-side, but completely eating posts with no warning followed by IP blocks and/or rangebans is the most hostile thing I've ever witnessed 4chan do in nearly two decades. In the early days, ofc moot and other admins did a bunch of trolling and whatnot, but I don't know what the hell the new admins are trying to do except drive the site into the ground.
Just offering a perspective. Best.

I wish I hadn't stayed on 4chan as long as I did, because I got to witness every unique board culture that once existed get annihilated. By 2014 it was clear old /v/, old /a/, and old /jp/ were disappearing, but you could still see traces of the dying culture. Now those are gone. /mu/, /tv/, /trv/, and other boards had unique cultures in the early 2010's that have since vanished. I miss /jp/ the most though. Wait, you got a rangeban for having your post eaten? I hope that's a coincidence... that goes beyond my worst possible expectations for that site's moderation
On a sidenote, maybe this is just a clumsy attempt from the mods to try and improve site quality, since in their eyes any post with 4 or more slurs is garbage. The OP image hasn't been hash filtered, so they're probably not hiding it. I'd put the odds at 80% that this is just them saying "Any post with these words in it will be crap, so let's get rid of it". Still, this is basically a shadowban. It doesn't matter if they have good intentions. Shadowbans are a horrible form of censorship and you shouldn't patronize any site that uses them.

Yea, the /24 from which I posted had posts be eaten (no errors, nothing).
After I tried to make further posts, I was then hit with a 10 day with the reason of "derezzed words" and those words were not defined, listed, nothing. As I said, I was not spamming or anything, I was just using terms that I use in my diction, and they were in long, cogent effortposts. I'm not even going to bother appealing that. I can just post from any of many other ranges, but I'm just done. This is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I agree about shadowbans. If the policy were explicit, or some meme word-substitution, whatever. But shadowbans are the most pernicious form of censorship there is, at least to me. I'm fuarrrking done.

The shadowbans have nothing whatsoever to do with cleaning up the site. They are just trying to drive away the few remaining organic posters there. Well, I think they might have finally succeeded.

But seriously, there's nothing good about Twitter. That place's a conspiratorial hellhole where grifters compete at who can think of the most outrageous lie. I really don't know what value does it provide, especially considering that its owner is not impartial. If content isn't directly censored, then it is censored via the algorithm, which props up accounts with certain viewpoints and silences others.
4chan is ruined by the extremely politicized pol-types who cannot contain their rot on said board. This move targets these types, and as such I have nothing against it. I can say nigger in my internal monologue though? I can use any slur I want in my mind, or whisper it to myself, no problem. I just don't say it to other people out of respect. And most of the internal monologue is just thinking what you would say to another person, so if you wouldnt say something to another person then you probably won't say it to yourself, and anyway vocalized thought is strictly worse for most things. Vocalized thoughts are more rigid, more socially minded, tending to be concerned with things like syntactical and semantic correctness. That's a misleading statement. Nobody is stopping you from reading those books to your own children in your own house if you think they are so great.

There actually is a religion with over a billion followers and their holy book commands them to dominate the world through violence and murder infidels, it's not called christianity though.

Name one thing that "nazis" have done since charlottesville (seven years ago). A person can't even hold a nazi flag in public without getting fired from their job and kicked out by their landlord and getting their entire life ruined. They want you to be obsessed with "nazis" because it's a non-existent threat. >There actually is a religion with over a billion followers and their holy book commands them to dominate the world through violence and murder infidels
there are three of them actually, and one of them is christianity
>Name one thing that "nazis" have done since charlottesville
literally every school shooting since then with the exception of that one that was done by a pooner
>A person can't even hold a nazi flag in public without getting fired from their job and kicked out by their landlord and getting their entire life ruined.
Elon Musk is retweeting white genocide tweets on a daily basis, and there have been two BLACK governors who have come out as open nazis, and a BLACK supreme court justice was caught taking money from a guy who collects nazi memorabilia
>which genocidal ultra-authoritarian """socialist""" ideology should we be worried about
the one which is against my class interest because it is astroturfed by billionaires, and not the one that lost the cold war and has existed only among internet larpers since then

You just implied that someone who wants to maintain an ethnostate must also be a nazi. As if this idea is somehow unique to nazis, as if they invented it.
