What phone/PDA/coolаssninjacyberdeck2500 are you using in your EDC? What software do you use with this kind of hardware and what tasks it helps to solve? I used nokia n900 w/ stock maemo OS. Great phone, but it couldnt run android properly -- and man, you cant have a soykaf without installing an app nowadays. So i got some cheapo used android xiaomi (about $150) and installed some less-glowing cfw, it worked great. After that was some rugged phone, some other mainstream consumer phones - and i noticed that i am becoming addicted to this tiny screen, like looking up stuff i never cared about or scrolling soycial media, reading news. So now i am considering getting more basic android device, like android flip phone or something - so i dont become socially disabled without all those apps but was less tempted to use it in my free time.

So a lot of people buy smartphones if they work somewhere like that. I know I did. I never learned how to text properly so I hate phones. Lucky me, until I need to send a text urgently.

You NEED a smartphone running at least Android in order to have a real life in society. The biopolitics of "phone addiction" aside, I also carry a GPD Pocket 2 someplaces, running NixOS. It's useful when you want a "real computer" experience without also carrying around a laptop. Useful for field work in microelectronics for example.

For example, my institution uses Duo Mobile for two-factor authentication. Depends on what you classify as a "real life" in society. Some people believe that you cannot have a proper life without having and using the latest social media, or something of similar sentiment. If that definition includes participating on social media, then that is your prerogative. But at the end of the day, you define what a "real life" is, not anyone else around you. I use social media as an example because it's something I've forgone for some time now (aside from LinkedIn for job searching) I don't mean to sound condescending. But it annoys me when people make these broad sweeping statements about what I or anyone else "needs" to have to live a proper life. If having or needing a phone in life bothers you, note what you need from a phone and look into replacements. I usually carry a laptop with me for work but the GPD lineup and similar machines have always looked interesting to me. How does it compare to just using an Android terminal emulator like Termux?

Social media does more harm than good. We should either reinvent it, learn to use it in a different way or completely abandon it, although none of that is going to happen. Also, everything that demands an app is deeply suspicious. The last good PDA was Palm III and I have been dreaming of a device having similar design philosophy, but with modern technological advances. Since those days, nothing. Just laptops and dumb phones, with no Internet connectivity. Why is that? For me, PDA is for personal use, not communication or some hidden activity, whatever its facade happens to hide. Whichever way is it? Do you own your device or does your device own you? If you cannot function without it, well...
