Irc still a thing?
Dozer · 2024-09-18 23:08
is irc messaging still used? i looked up mibbit but it shut down and it's suggesting another website which is also down.
i only used web based irc so far, is there another way to do that? well if the channels are dead maybe i shouldn't bother...
Void · 2024-09-18 23:11
Yes, IRC is used. Servers like Libera, Snoonet are still active. There are multiple clients like weechat, irssi (both terminal) or Hexchat, Quassel (GUI bases

IRC is still frequently used. I would recommend CozyNet.ORG's IRC server and Libera's server. I would recommend you install a client, preferably something such as Weechat or Irssi. Way better than dealing with web-browser stuff. If you use it over VPN or TOR, you can likely easily configur either of those clients to work right but I am not exactly sure as to how you would do that.
Yu-ichi · 2024-11-17 07:00
IRC is still. The reason why you think all the IRC channels are dead is that you are unaware of the general nature of IRC. Basically everyone idles until someone starts talking about something. Once that happen a discussion starts until it dies and everyone goes back to idling.
Switch · 2024-11-17 07:37
all of the big servers disallow tor. libera for instance, you cant register on that piece of soykaf without deanonymizing yourself. you have to give them your clearnet ip before you can use the hidden service. soykaf tier server. other irc servers do the same as libera. the few i can join are dead and what little activity there is is boring.

CozyNet too. Why does everyone have to blanket ban, why not: "Your account is locked until you send $10 to this crypto address"
Junichi Fujiwara · 2024-11-17 09:30
I was able to register on Libera by virtue of spending a ~day of my personal time searching for a VPN exit node that isn't derezzed. I'll give you a hint, buy a VPN with crypto, then keep searching for a server that is not derezzed on Libera. I do fully agree that blanket banning is an essentially retarded take, but such is the world. Soon we'll be forced to have our personal codes attached to every outgoing packet.
Neuromancer · 2024-11-17 09:31
If you want to get (or provide) support for various Linux distros, various programming languages, various foss apps, and similar, irc is still the way to go. Libera.chat is a treasurehouse in this regard. OFTC is where you can find support for Tor and Debian, among other things.
Note that irc is not a place where you go to socialize. Typically you go there to ask a question and then wait (sometimes a long time) for an answer. That's why the channels often look dead. They aren't. Sjitposters who don't get this usually have a bad experience on irc. That's their problem.
There are also irc servers that allow Tor access without doxxing yourself, but I'm not going to name them here for obvious reasons.
If you want to use Tor on Libera without doxxing yourself, rent a cheap vps for a month and use it as a proxy to set up the initial account before configuring Tor access. Note that Libera staff still won't let you be an asshole. On irc, only staff and channel operators are allowed to be assholes.
Netrunner · 2024-11-17 09:47
i know can get a vpn or vps or maybe even a proxy to chain to my tor circuit i'm not ignorant. i've indexed thousands of vpns. i think it is bullshit that i have to either spend hours scouring for a free honeypot vpn that i can use, or pay actual money just to talk to people over the internet. it's bullshit and i wont play along, people going along with this bullshit is what is going to make us utterly technologically enslaved.

There is no way around it, they have AI and years of experience manipulating people so they will always arrange your solitude in such a way that you'll start going crazy and let yourself be pwned just to get your bit of conversation. There is no way to defend yourself from this passively. The only solution is to counterattack, but if your IQ is > 60 you probably noticed that there wasn't a single point in history where this contest succeeded. You can therefore conclude that live is an endless meaningless struggle between those who want power and have it, those who want power and don't have it, and those who got fuarrrking sick of either and just want to rid the world of them. Sitting on your couch complaining that the world doesn't let you do soykaf for free is fuarrrking lame. Rights are not given, they are taken.
Apoc · 2024-11-17 12:50
i love and still use irc. erc and hexchat are my main clients.
xdcc is still my main way of pirating content

Its not schizo.
If you want to be anon. Use I2P. The more people who use it the better is becomes.
Also it has built in torrenting which makes the network faster by discovering peers.
There are many I2P servers and there are also servers which support I2P.
I wouldn't use tor anymore to be honest.

>I wouldn't use tor anymore to be honest.
Here's the problem with I2P: no way to access the clearnet from I2P. Each and every site you want to use needs to have an I2P mirror available for you, else you miss out.
Tor is sadly still the only network that can do that.
Pris · 2025-03-27 12:30

I tried to set up I2P a year or two ago and it was complete trash. Even just for browsing I2P sites there was no good solution except people saying to use firefox in fuarrrking windows. Absurdly insecure. Nothing like Tails, no approachable way to set it up in Qubes. How do you even use it?

It's a socks proxy, use the browser you want

Why would you want to use the www. It's full of slop.
Haruyoshi · 2025-03-27 17:34

not just the www, anything over TCP. like you can't proxy gopher over Tor

I2P by default is not very anon
Browser X-I2p-Dest tracking across sites and user accounts, connected to node IP based on uptime. This is what every website sees of you, note X-I2p-Dest ones don't change until node restart:
http://63sgpiu6f33arldcxkbjsn3jgf6asyx3onjmz6j6gsk7hgbiehkq.b32.i2p/
And node restart can be publicly recorded. Anonymous network lmao, better cross site tracking than what Google has
Browser leak because people can't set it up right
Correlate node and service uptime. Internet outage? Oops your HTTP proxy and torrent client are now connected to an IP
Torrent cross session tracking based on what you seed and download
Through traffic needed for anonymity but with a closed port there isn't any

literally what?
just use proxychains or torsocks for anything non-www

like the other anons mentioned, it shines at tech support; however, yes, there are a few casual channels alive too.
for any anon reading this, this is your formal invitation to irc.chud.cyou/6697
