I've been using Kagi (kagi.com) for 1.5 years now and I'm quite happy with it.
It is a paid search engine which was a quite hard pill to swallow for me (they didn't have unlimited plans back then and each search you did cost you a few cents). Other than that you can block sites from your search results, raise some or pin the archwiki for example. They also have a bunch of AI stuff, but unlike the others it's completely opt-in, they don't force it on you.
The search results remind me of old google.
They also have a trial plan that gives you 100 free searches so you can try it out for yourself.

SearX is excellent, even lets you search websites like libgen.

I would try Mojeek but it bothers me it is UK based so a surveillance nanny state so i dont personally trust using it.
https://www.mojeek.com/
There used to be a search engine called Unbubble but seems it shut down.
Ive found Yandex is slightly less tailored to SEO content. Not entirely like old Google but it's a few years in the past on the kind of content you get.
https://yandex.com/

I also find Yahoo Japan more useful for Japanese searches sometimes.

Filtered searches

Havent used this one because it uses an account but it tries to remove SEO sites by removing top results but it likely doesnt work well.

For academic stuff

Open source human curated and distributed

It's poorly coded. At least for me after a search you cant do a new search and have to return to the home page among other issues with basic functionality along with how inconvenient it is set up to change the search engine on a seporate page instead of same page as the search bar. Plus it is just another meta search engine but I dont really like it only does one engine at a time, instead it should do multiple while labelling which engines got those results. Before it got screwed up recently where you cant use all the search engines together anymore MetaGer was pretty good for meta search since it being backed by a non profit it at least has some accountability unlike all these self hosted stuff like 4get and SearX and SearXNG where there isnt real accountability. Meanwhile DuckDuckGo gives all your data to Microsoft. Startpage is owned by an ad agency. Protip bookmark the EU address for Startpage to use EU servers only since they have better data protection laws and less money to put to mass surveillance than the US. Brave is shady is fuarrrk and just gets it's stuff from Bing while claiming to have it's own crawler.

> Democratic soykafhole?! No way!
Yandex
> Autocratic soykafhole?! Sure, whatever.

Does anyone know why Gibiru has so little info on it? Some people are suspicious of it because of that. Information is inconsistent. Some sources say it is a meta search and some say it has it's own web crawler.

You dont really have to worry about data collection from countries that don't share with your government unless you are a government agent or big politician. So depends where you live if you are concerned with privacy/security. You also can use Yandex through meta search engines to detach your identity from if you live in Russia or something.

Democracy is not the opposite of authoritarianism and useful idiots like you are the reason why.

> countries that don't share with your government
every big tech search engine shares data with the government. they're obliged by laws to do it, either directly (Google to NSA, Yandex to FSB) or indirectly (upon govt request).
I'd trust people who self host meta search engines rather than directly using big tech ones.

They aren't obliged except the countries their servers are located in. I'm not sure how it works when the servers are in a country different from the owners though if they are legally obliged to hand it over or only threatened to.
I did forget to mention in that message they could potentially sell your data to databrokers which can be potentially bought by your government or companies where you live.

Democracy is exactly the opposite of authoritarianism, and dumbfucks like you who don't know what they're talking about should keep their mouths shut.
