What happened to the https://aether.app/blog project? The founding developers seemed to have "just disappeared". On WikiPedia the Aether project is "abandoned". But why? Did glowies show up and present the developers with an offer they could not refuse? Is there any other more plausible explanation?

Simple explanation: Nobody used it. People use Facebook, Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, iMessage, Telegram, WeChat, Slack, Teams, any walled garden service their contacts already use, anything that's preinstalled, anything that saves them two clicks, privacy and decentralization be damned. They'll die kicking and screaming before trying alternatives. Devs lost interest because of the stagnating user base or because they realized they can never monetize Aether. Devs now make $300k developing proprietary software for a big corp, instead of burning money at a DOA startup. Glowies, corps don't have to do anything to these small projects, they reliably die on their own, like Lainchan. Manipulators show up once the project gains significant following, otherwise their time is better spent elsewhere.
