lainchan / Ω
just discovered that dreamchan is dead
Lunch · 2024-08-11 05:36
Decided to check out the site after a couple of years, and it's gone :(
Anybody know what happened to it? It was a comfy little altchan and I had a lot of fun browsing it during covid.
A lot of these niche forums and altchans keep dying. There was this comfy onionsite forum, "the hub", that has also died since the last time I visited it. If there's one thing I absolutely hate, it's how corporatized and sterile the modern internet is. No place is like the wild west anymore, and heck, no place is even comfy anymore (besides lainchan, that is :)
If anyone is curious, here are the links:
dreamchan - https://web.archive.org/web/20220323092840/https://dreamch.net/ the hub - thehubmcwyzwijjoqvdtpmu36npcueypjbgnvbqz4jliwjmmnpfkzkqd.onion
(pic kinda rel, makes me feel melancholic)

It feels almost like lainchan is dead. I don't mean slow or inactive but its less and less a cyberpunk orientated place and just feels like yet another tech orientated imageboard. I get the feeling that the people who'd use altchans are a dying breed too. There's less and less interest in fringe and unusual places with their own unique style and atmosphere and people's means of finding new communities is through established social media platforms which means many altchans simply never get found. There's a definitely a specific mold or model of behavior that big tech imposes on us so the type of user who'd enjoy these spaces is becoming a dying breed.

For me it was anon.cafe and some other really vague chans

Am missing it too, although no clue what happened. I think there was just little traffic and admin decided to turn off the plug. Missing the good deeds page the most and that funny bird you could find on there.
>No place is like the wild west anymore, and heck, no place is even comfy anymore (besides lainchan, that is :)
I kinda have started a feeling this isn't actually JUST an internet problem. It's kinda bigger as there doesn't seem to be as much interesting stuff everywhere you go, even irl. You can travel the world and here the same music play everywhere. Modern internet does seem to have some kind of curse build into it though. It even touches the most meaningless stuff ever. If you played a video game in the past, you were forced to experiment in it to find out what you could do. Nowadays tons of people follow guides on what the best strategies and what not are. Which to me is very weird, as if you are not willing to put some self expression into essentially a toy, what does that say about the bigger stuff?
There is a small personal solution to it though. You should make your own stuff (be it websites, rugs, clothes or whatever) and put some love and care into it That's where diversity comes from. If we all decide to think a bit outside the box and nurture stuff we do, I feel things would be fine. Not that you should do everything alone. I don't know how to sew clothes so am not currently doing that, but I've decided to pick up a keyboard and teach myself music. And yeah, I still follow guides others make, but I also try to have fun and see what weird stuff I can come up with. Maybe in some time I'll have something fresh coming from me. And if not, I'll at least am having fun experimenting.

No idea but this places feels more and more like a slower darker version of /g/ with a lain theme. There's less and less discussion of cyberpunk lit and lifestyle these days. Should probably start some new threads on the other boards.

imageboard culture has become a cancer in the anus of the internet. A big fat putrid sac of pus and cancer cells. and now the germs are migrating to altchans and giving them internet AIDS. It just turns you off. Altchans are supposed to be alternative but they fill up with these 4channers who are the worlds worst soykafs. So you just leave instead of staying. Why use an altchan that is just 2.0 4chon? Defeats the purpose. Look at how many Nazis turn up here when you insult their precious homosexual man crush and derail discussions to promote that board named after Bill Maher's sad excuse for a tv show. Who wants to hang out with these edgy subhuman failures? When they spread to an altchan it dies. Lets not forget CP spambot-kun too. Who wants to use a site where mild kiddie porn is posted every week? More importantly who can keep up with the stress of maintaining a site and paying the server bill with the above mentioned problems.
imageboards are just normal now. thats the problem. they are too mainstream. i wish for a nice cozy altchan but it will be invaded by 4chan colonizers within a few years. find a way to stop those internet zionists and the CP spammers and you will save the altchans.
>>79250
NTA cyb lit is established just not on this site. It would be nice to see people discussing cyb lit and media but that happens less and less. The site is slowly filling up with /g/ people and retards who get their opinions from politically incorrect. Its not even neon dystopia or reddit cyberpunk level but slowly morphing into 4chon in dark mode. Now when it comes to /g/ it is just slightly more intelligent politically incorrect. but that doesnt mean much because they spend their lives discussing worthless unimportant things and masturbating to an old jewish hacker while parroting the paleo-libertarian anti-semitism/africanism of politically incorrect or their latest curtis yarvin sex doll made in shenzen. thats when they aren't fawning over GAHNUU SLASH linux and useless IBM laptops so old they could consent to sex.
>cyberpunk lifestyle

I left /g/ because people there don't discuss technology at all. The average thread is just fighting over what tech brand is superior or over how minorities "are ruining tech" or some bullshit.
And not only that but you have many people on there who complain about stupid soykaf like how there are ads on YouTube (as if they don't know what ad-blockers are) or how linux "is holding back computing" and they go to defend proprietary software. It's like the average person there is some twelve year old tiktok kid who uses computers solely for playing the latest video games.
Entirety of 4ch* is a normal user site now.

I assume most of these are bots. If you look closely there's no direct reference to the image contents in the text of some of these spam posts. I get the vibe that 4chan is some ideological warground for armies congregating in secret, that a person just looking at the catalog cannot properly interpret.

There's lots of appreciation for the early Lenovo era (up to the T/X430, 2012) era, moreso (in a practical sense, because they have more computing power and are respectively more useful; build quality notwithstanding, it didn't begin truly falling off until after the XX30 series) than the IBM era.
There's a small thread here discussing old Core2Duo ThinkPads with Libreboot.

You can blame soykafty moderation abuse for that. Between race baiting zealots being given all the authority to undermine local culture and ban happy tranny jannies, its really no surprise that there isn't much worth bothering with by design.
>There is a small personal solution to it though. You should make your own stuff
I did take that advice years ago and made some neat stuff since then but it still didn't stop me from being arbitrarily derezzed despite not making porn and not making anything sketchy. I guess I really do need to take control and start my own community if I don't want to be derezzed anymore.

I feel like you might just have to read cyberpunk literature in order to truly grok it. Like, cyberpunk is more, and different, from just the recycled aesthetics of it that you find in modern pop culture. I don't really know what happened to it. The owner did an interview about his chan at some point and it didn't feel like he was going to close the site at any point, but couple weeks/months after, it closes. Probably either change of heart or the guy died somehow.
Moderation was lacking before the site shutdown for good. I think the owner just passed away and no one was there to check on the site. Sad thought but it is the only reason i can come up with really.

This is the only answer. If you don't want to live in mass society by mass values, you have to build your own friend groups, projects, etc.
Decades ago Germany tried to improve timber harvests but all their planned forests died because planting hundreds of trees in neat rows with no other crops makes a soykafty forest. Trees don't conform. There's a parallel between sticking trees in rows, humans on instagram, and humans in the matrix. It would be sad if trees were less slavish than people.

You cannot make a place like "the wild west" last very long. Period. People will get tired of the huge amount of hostile people coming in and taking their space, and they will leave.
I don't know what you mean by "comfy", but lainchan has definitely seen better days.
>>79228
>There's less and less interest in fringe and unusual places with their own unique style and atmosphere
Because most of them are filled with delusional and/or anti-social people that have no interest in forming a tightly knit community, and the people that do, realized that they were wasting their time being in those spaces and trying to contribute in some way. Altchans will always be, at their core, 4chin clones, in design, views, goals, etc. Give it enough time, and the same thing that happened to 4chin will happen to lainchan (assuming it doesn't just go away like the rest of altchans).
>There's a definitely a specific mold or model of behavior that big tech imposes on us so the type of user who'd enjoy these spaces is becoming a dying breed.
That doesn't make any sense. It's not "big tech" that is at fault, it's whoever runs those spaces. If their mod team wants to make it a hostile space, or just a space that doesn't care about maintaining its culture and community for very long, that's on them.
I also think that there's definitely a connection between altchans failing and anonymity. The lack of identity makes you feel like you have no purpose in those spaces, but maybe that's just me.
>>79251
Great way to put it. When someone tries to be nice and create something "comfy", other people start abusing of their good faith. We can't have nice things around here, unless if you make a private space on some IRC server or something.
Anyway, all I'm saying is: Bring people together, keep your friends close, because when soykaf goes south and everyone leaves, you'll be left in the dust with no one to rely on.

Real cyberpunks don't have a dresscode except that they don't buy designer clothing including tacticool nonsense. If something fits wear it loser.
Real cyberpunks do thrift this is true.
See above, most computers are hackable, gatekeeping computer use is like gatekeeping books. It's how you use a system not what the system is.
Real cyberpunks use whatever coding language and system fits the job and don't have brand loyalty or worship brands like this apple lover and amiga hater seems to.
Real cyberpunks drive whatever fits the need and don't interact with police.
Real cyberpunks don't contradict themselves constantly, what is this an advertisement for some tool company now?

It's unfortunate, but the best use of an image board I find is to crowdsource unique perspectives, rather than fully formed ideas. Like, "here's something I made, what do you think?". The level of competency needed to use or reason about something is much lower than actually making it, so you may get more useful responses this way, though the majority will of course be bikeshedding.

That was the promise, and what the world purported to be and claimed to value, and what I always wanted. Or maybe I didn't truly want it, maybe I didn't want to feel the presence or connection of others at all, seeing it as death and engulfment. Maybe they gave me good reason.

I've found that it's very rare that you get to have actually technically productive discussions on imageboards (with the math general on /sci/ being an exception)
i usually just stick to irc channels for technical stuff, and only come here when I want to relax and read other people's thoughts on random stuff
Also like another lainon pointed out, those topics are pretty niche so it's unlikely you'll find someone here who knows anything about that stuff.

>Also like another lainon pointed out, those topics are pretty niche so it's unlikely you'll find someone here who knows anything about that stuff.
The problem is more the type of response you get from peoplewho don't know and don't care to know. That's what made me move from knowing the average person is a dumb follower, to general distaste in the human race, to outright disgust and truly believing in NPCs. You have to understand, it's not just disappointment from a lack of engagement. Of the type of responses you do get, I actually despise these people. I truly hate the very concept of them, their entire existence, down to the core. Engaging with their output is extremely psychologically damaging if it;s prolonged for years to decades. They're like mosquitos. If you stand around too long you might start really thinking about where you are and why, so mosquitos are sent to keep you moving. These people are the same way. They give you whatever is engaging to keep up the illusion that they're real people, when they're actually NPCs. Bots.

Response bias. Non "npcs" won't respond because they understand they have nothing valuable to say (see >>79749)
. So you only get "npcs" and then make the conclusion that most internet users (or even humanity) are like this.
As for the npc meme itself, while I agree that there are people very robotic in their personality and nature, but its my personal belief that its a product of systematic institutionalization. Most people (if you live in a suburb or city) go through alot of the same experiences, so it makes sense that they end up with similar personalities. Unfortunately critical thinking and individuality is disincentivized in this system (by design or otherwise), so you have alot of people seeing no problem in having the majority of their decisions made by someone else. These people end up looking very robotic, but my point is that it can be changed using the same tools that made them npcs in the first place. Calling them an npc implies that, like its counterpart, it is impossible to be anything but

I know a couple of comfy places, I just don't advertise them. There are actually quite a few, but they tend to be hobby boards who don't want 4chan nerds showing up and starting fights. They are comfy precisely because they are not wild and kick out wild people and topics.
As for wild west, I'm too old to find any 'true' wild west fun, because it inevitably just becomes the nest of people derezzed from other places for being edgy and posting shock images and spamming random (literal, not figurative) nonsense. Think of Francis E Dec in the internet age, except dumb.

On the other hand, I can't bare to stay in it. Even the steady trickle of tourists bringing /pol/lution from 4chan here is icky.
It was easier to find other boards when 4chan (and later 8ch) had less of them and people wanted to make posts out-of-scope and were told where to find other sites allowing it. One of the smaller imageboard sites I liked almost died around 2015 when 4chan finally introduced the oft-requested board this smaller site hosted. Although, since then, abusive 4jannies deleting threads has managed to revive the site.
It's also just like a lot of social circles - far easier to discover things horizontally once you have a foot or two in the door.
