Wayland freezes on Debian

Acid Burn · 2024-08-08 09:33
Everything in the OS continues working except nothing on the screen updates. I can still do input (paused and unpaused a "video" with space bar). I can switch to a TTY once but if I switch back to Gnome, then I'm stuck there and can't get to any of the TTYs (and Gnome is still frozen). Audio works in the TTY. I checked systemd logs for the time of the freezes and didn't see any obvious problems. Any ideas how to recover/prevent?

are you sure its just wayland/have you tried xorg ? could you try basic things like update graphics drivers n sheet I'd switch to tty, kill gnome and restart wayland I assume theres something like startx you can do

> wayland > gnome Apart from obvious problems, did you check dmesg? Maybe share logs? Or maybe you missed something. Are you running nvidia gpu?

if your hardware was released recently - after 21-22 it's expected the stable release of debian will behave poorly, buggy, not at all. Without providing any other info, you might want to try the testing branch.

Sorry, but systemd distributions are not debuggable. I have a weird issue with logind and rootless xorg that sometimes makes xorg to die. It turns off my screen and doesn't respond to any input. I have to raw my keyboard (sysrq) to switch to another tty and kill xorg. Other ttys work fine. It happens when I switch between xorg sessions too rapidly. I use i3wm. There are no log. There are not even hints. Maybe it's not even systemd's fault, I don't know. But the current situation is that systemd is not design to be debuggable, GNOME is not designed to be usable, wayland is not designed at all, and xorg at this point is a decrepit kettle nobody wants to poke. Create bug report on GNOME bug tracker. Maybe they'll help you. Maybe.
