The Core 2 duo and libreboot
The Oracle · 2024-07-31 23:01
Forgive me for being possibly illiterate on popular opinion in tech hipster spaces but is this a serious perspective? At this point, I have seen troves of people on random YouTube videos claiming that the core 2 duo is sufficient for modern computing. And am I just like, no? You cannot write serious code on that kind of machine today. You cannot access most modern websites without an usable level of lag. I don't understand.

if you want real tech hipster, go on r/thinkpad
Sabo Engle · 2024-08-01 01:05
modern computing doesn't mean anything. There are only workloads, and no doubt whatever setup you describe can run certain workloads.
Acid Burn · 2024-08-01 07:24
obviously core2duo is fine for an awful lot of things. And a high end modern gaming battle station is fine for pretty much a strict superset of things provided power and portability are not issues. And both fall short of serious computation tasks.
Obviously for programming to a large extent all you need is a text editor. You can use a core2duo laptop as a terminal and then a remote build server if you're working on a project that needs it.
My raspi is soykaftier as a computer than your core2duo and I use it all the time.
but people who love old stinkpads are either eastern europeans who haven't yet got the news that IBM sold to Lenovo, or hipsters
Armitage · 2024-08-11 04:28
a c2d is enough for pretty much any workflow as long as you use the right software. use windows 7 or basically any linux distro with a lightweight desktop with older and / or foss software and ur golden really.
Mitnick · 2024-08-13 18:18
A Core 2 Duo/Quad is anough for most people. anything that requires better hardware is bloat. I use a T14 thinkpad and still use mostly terminal programs.
Drano · 2024-08-19 11:09
core2duo is fine but where it is like kicking dead whales down the beach is when you use the modern web. just install ublock and noscript and everything is magically better

My ThinkPad has no odour. If yours does, then maybe that reflects your own poor personal hygiene choices.

I keep a Windows 7 Core 2 Quad machine for offline use, it has a variety of games and a copy of Visual Studio where I make simple GUI programs for fun. The times I have connected it to the internet it loads javascript heavy websites as fast as my Ryzen based machine and can stream 4k videos easily. Modern processor performance scaling is practically nonexistant after 2012 or so.

>You cannot access most modern websites without an usable level of lag.
Use noscript or ublock or even just an ad blocker. You need to take a more active role in deciding what your browser does instead of letting every website you visit rape your machine with ads and javascript.

>as fast as my Ryzen based machine and can stream 4k videos easily
The main thing that will trip people up using old CPUs is the lack of hardware h265 decoding. Some videos will work great and other videos will be unwatchably slow and jerky and it won't be obvious what the problem is. Use ffmpeg to convert videos to h264 if you're serious about using an old CPU.
Molly Millions · 2024-08-31 08:57
The people who state these kind of opinions are so far removed from how the average person uses a computer that even if they're serious, they should not be taken seriously.

A Core 2 series CPU is suitable for secure communications. If you want to accelerate encryption and compression use an Intel QAT card or a GPGPU. A lot of "intensive" stuff can be offloaded to accelerator cards. Trustworthy CPUs and chipsets are what are hard to come by. Check out the single-board computers at Pine64.com - you will see some of them can run with zero binary blobs. A Core 2 series CPU may be more useful because more pci/pcie cards can be attached than most ARM or RISC-V boards.
If you need to do xbox kind of stuff then dedicate a machine to just that activity and firewall it off appropriately.

As others have rightfully pointed out, other than the modern web bloat a Core 2 Duo is very capable. I actively use a librebooted laptop with a mid-range C2D and 4GB of RAM with no issues. The bloat scaling of modern tech is unrelated to actual productivity.
And how would you define "serious code" anyway? I write fairly complex applications in OCaml just fine. And if I need the cores or memory I have a dual Xeon home server for those tasks. And if by "serious" you mean contributing to software bloat or supercomputing, I am interested in neither.

Does Libreboot/Coreboot remove or disable Computrace?
Cause I got a secondhand computer for free and it has Computrace enabled (they worked in corporate) and I can't disable it in BIOS.

i have a question;
is the intel core 2 duo t7300 a decent cpu?
i have a dell latitude d830 (broken hinges) that's got one and it struggles running windows 7 and a web browser (pale moon). should i just run debian on it and hope it runs smoothly?

Mine was fine for watching lectures, light programming, and web browsing with a trim Linux distribution. It wasn't sufficient to run a gentoo installation, and it was pretty easy to find memory leaks caused by incorrect uMatrix usage.

for web browsing, word processing, and maybe light gaming (with a gpu obviously and not playing anything new) you should be fine. honestly i'd still be using a dell optiplex with a core2duo if i just replaced the failing hard drive...but i was a young idiot who thought it wouldn't work with newer hdds/ssds. i also fell for the gaming meme but that's another story.
>You cannot write serious code on that kind of machine today
how so?

I have a desktop running a 10900k and I still use an older 2 core laptop on the side. Does plenty of things just fine, Most of the lag you're going to experience in older systems is from the ram being slow not the CPU.
That being said they work just fine provided you know what you're doing and can actually install a low to the ground optimized system whether that be linux based or an older version of windows. I will just say personally whenever I hear "muh 2 cores are unusable garbage" I just assume the person saying it is tech illiterate and tried to install a consumer version of windows 11/10 on a spinning hdd on a system with 3gb of ram or something and is calling it “unusable.” Yeah that would indeed be unusable and you should have been able to know that before trying it... personally every experience I've had using them speaks to the absolute contrary. I mean yeah, trying to compile some massive program/2024 AAAss gaming on it sure it’s not going to work. But web browsing, word documents, playing 720p videos through browser or even 1080p local videos etc work fine. Modern sites load fine with a proper element blocker which I assume you’re using on your main rigs anyways unless you’re a techlet. Get one with an older dedicated GPU and good drivers/SSD and it will fly just fine for your basic uses. You can also have a fully loaded linux system run very well on them.
If you want out of the box jest werks brand new bleeding edge windows don’t be buying older computers to begin with

This project is epically based and probably the most autistic attempt at securing your equipment against glowniggatry.
Link to T500 quad core project here:

That last link might give you a couple more years, unless someone will try to reverse engineer and publish BIOS code that takes into account the Nvidia chipset model ThinkPads.

If you can tolerate manifest v3 and using google goyslop then chromium has a faster engine than firefox. Its sad but true, chromium scales better on low and high ram devices and generally handshakes and loads websites faster, I cant remember which had smoother scrolling
Google made a faster browser than mozilla, the people at mozilla are monumentally retarded and focus on soykaf like pocket or whatever instead of making their browser work better, I use palemoon even though it handles soykaf websites poorly and use waterfox for soykaf that may not work on PM but only as a backup. PM handshakes faster than any other browser

super weird because the t61 I'm having can do 720p 60 and 1080p with a weak t7300 and intel graphics with maybe like 1% dropped frames and no heating issues at all. x230 should shi all over this. Maybe just inadequate heatsink in that machine or a cooling issue specific to you for some reason

this is true, firefox is slow as sh^t not only on older computers but also cheaper/older android phones.

glad i'm not going crazy noticing how firefox became slower, ended up switching to librewolf.
