/file hosts/ - long term storage edition

John Doe · 2024-07-22 06:43
Seeing a lack of a thread dedicated to file hosts and file hosting services, I decided to make one myself. post any and all file hosting websites here, especially free websites that give you infinite hosting time(like anonfiles, zippyshare etc.) I feel like the current best anonfiles replacements are: https://anonymfile.com/ - uploads can be stored indefinitely, max file size is 5GB https://gofile.to/ - clone of the above https://filehaus.su/ - infinite storage, max file size is a whopping 300GB https://buzzheavier.com/ - infinite storage, max file size is infinite, claims to be privacy friendly https://easyupload.io/ - 30 day storage, max file size 20GB https://transfert.free.fr/ - 7 day storage, max file size 10GB
Six · 2024-07-22 08:16
>/file hosts/ It makes me very sad that you decided to use slashes in your thread subject. Slashes are for boards, not for threads.
Judge Fang · 2024-07-22 09:50
>>78887 Cheers OP I'm curious, how would you implement something like this? Surely no one, even with sizable pockets, would use cloud storage for one of these services. My guess is >cloudflare or some other ddos protection service that hands off traffic to: >VPS for domain connection that hands off to: >the site owner's home, complete with fiber optics, a firewall router, DMZ, and a BUNCH of 14TB HDD drives >these 3 network nodes hopefully connected with a VPN like wireguard
Demeere · 2024-07-22 10:05
>>78887 You forgot the best one, catbox.moe >>78892 Maybe you should lurk more, putting slashes in the subject field has been a cute little staple in imageboard culture for years. /file-hosts/, is not a board, true, but it's fun to pretend! >>78896 >The site owner's home Not the best idea for a multitude of reasons, but that's just my opinion
Crazy Jake · 2024-07-22 10:22
>>78896 >anonymfile.com >gofile.to >buzzheavier.com >easyupload.io point to Cloudflare IP addresses >filehaus.su >89.213.174.204 >Man Hosting GMB H SRL (AS215740) >Romanian hosting company >cheap storage plans, about 1€/TB/month >https://ihostart.com/ >transfert.free.fr >51.159.84.119 >Scaleway S.A.S. (AS12876) >https://www.scaleway.com/ >probably a proxy, storage expensive here Really makes you think why people operate these, e.g. gofile.to and anonymfile.com (which are exactly the same UI, A even links to G) have no way to make money: >GoFile / Anonym File is hosted on dozens of very powerful servers with high bandwidth. There is no restrictions on network speed. You download at the maximum speed of your connection. However, the service is necessarily limited in capacity since I finance the infrastructure myself. Data harvesting? Hobby project of some millionaire? Why two sites?
Lady Jessica · 2024-07-22 11:20
>>78897 >multitude of reasons Any reasons other than pizza, DCMA conflicts, random power outages, painting a target on your back for the feds, and limited bandwidth? That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Some of those might not even be issues. If I decided to run this service, I'd still consider having a fallback node or full clone/backup at my house. I can't get passed the thought of feeds ordering a registrar to belly up because 1 put of 84,000 sites did something nasty. >>78898 1€ a TB isn't as bad as I thought. Even after years of usage >lets say 1 TB is uploaded per day >365€ at the end of year 1 >double that to add redundancy >730€ a year Also not bad when a 14TB HDD costs over $300 and you dont need to worry about HW failures if you purchase addons protection. I think that'd be a cool hobby project if you had money to throw around. That's hardly even the price of a 2 week annual vacation. Perhaps the bigger question is, why would anyone create a service and price it like ihoststart?

The acid test for file storage is leaving files on them for years without any usage of the account. If you go back, say, five years later and the account still works and the files are still there, it's a good storage site. The file content makes no difference if you encrypt them well. There are two commercial sites I have had this experience with. One is mediafire, the other is box. They were both free-tier accounts. That's all I know. YMMV.

>>79301 Hmm, I can't think of a reason for sharing them either, except for just need a quick, working area to drop a file, and pick it up on another device. Someone could just whoop your ass some other way. I also haven't header of self executing files before. https://pomf.lain.la/ doesn't seem to ban any file types. I've written my own file hosting website and the bot activity is quite interesting. One keeps uploading the max amount of files per request, but the files are empty, 0 bytes. I don't understand why anyone would create such a thing. I've added a Nginx Geo Ip whitelist, and endpoint limits, so we'll see if that helps. If not, I'll have to start looking at Proof of Work or Cloudflare

>>79743 IPFS is not derezzed on a lot of otherwise censored ISPs and networks, though
Incognito · 2024-09-27 14:21
>>79563 Most of the IPFS gateways are now either down or blocked. There's basically only ipfs.io and dweb.link left. Also just uploading a file to your node doesn't guarantee that it'll be fast to retrieve by other nodes, in fact, it's most often very sluggish. And if nobody pins the file, it gets garbage collected and it vaporizes into oblivion. Gateways are the culprit.

I have a couple of terabytes of data I want to pin indefinitely and I like the idea of anyone being able to retrieve it from multiple providers in a decentralised fashion and pin it themselves. The monthly pricing to store a couple of terabytes of data still isn't really there though. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars a month on this.

I personally like Pixeldrain. Their free tier has been fine for everything I need it for (No hard storage limit, 120 day expiration, up to 20gb per file). The biggest downside is that there is a 6GB daily download limit, but there is a bypass you can use.
Masami Eiri · 2025-04-17 07:03
>>85145 No it does not. That's just a data gathering trap. You tell them about a project you're building and they will review your application for a free VPS. I made a project for real doctors, and they didn't even respond to my application.
Miho Iwakura · 2025-04-19 17:08
Theoretically, what's stopping someone from just constantly re-uploading stuff that is about to expire? And what's stopping someone from just splitting up a 1TB archive into x amounts of 1GB chunks to make it fit? Will the file host jannies ban you?
Donna Hawthorne · 2025-04-19 20:18
>>85501 I hadn't even considered this. Nice brain flops dude
Bob Arctor · 2025-04-20 06:51
>>85501 people already split archives since it's easier to fix broken downloads, and the issue with reuploading is that you may need to update the url. expiration dates are meant to purge content nobody loves, this is why some hosts purge files after time passes *without any downloads*, if you love it it should not be an issue
