I need new laptop

Jens Hansen · 2024-07-10 18:47
I'm currently in very bad need for new laptop. What is the best option a the moment for under 1500€?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

>>78668 What are you planning on doing with your new laptop? If it is for a sensible task and you are a fan of DIY, the old thinkpad meme always rings true. Besides that, I've heard great things about the Microsoft laptops -- specifically the Surfaces with the 5:3 aspect ration screens. Real cool -- depending on their linux compatibility, many be my pick when it comes time for me to get a new laptop. I think those run around 1000USD new.
Dujour · 2024-07-10 21:53
1500 is a hell lot of money you literally have unlimited options. I've seen i5 laps with discrete amd card for something like 800EUR. Just buy whatever has better specs, from a well known brand, like lenovo or asus or acer or wtf

>>78672 >Lenovo I am not sure why anyone still trust them since the whole Superfish debacle.

>>78668 idk since im not a person who has used hundreds of laptops why dont you try searching the vast selection of unobjective reviews of hardware on the internet

>>78669 Probably just lurk, browse web and experimenting with linux :D >>78672 Yeah, that's a lot of money. >>78679 I have tried that but it's not leading me forward. Am I retard if I buy Pinebook pro? https://pine64.org/devices/pinebook_pro/
Jens Hansen · 2024-07-11 06:02
>>78681 Depends on what you need it for. It seems fine for its price, but 4GB of ram and no possibility to upgrade could be too low. I like that it can charge on 5V. That means it can be charged from a normal power bank, a portable solar panel, a car, or even a standard cellphone charger for when you forgot your. Afaik, it is the only laptop to provide that (although some others can be charged with usb power delivery, which offers some of the same advantages)

>>78668 If you want the highest performance to cost ratio then I'd say Lenovo Legion is a pretty solid choice. Elegant looking gaming laptop. It seems pretty popular at my university, even though it's far from portable or comfortable every-day carry.
Chan Siu Ming · 2024-07-11 13:03
If I needed to buy a laptop soon I would probably research an appropriate Dell. If I wanted to go cheap I'd find a suitable Acer. The last time I was stupid enough to buy a Lenovo, I quickly discovered that it was intentionally designed to make Linux installation impossible. On top of that, the battery would drain in about three hours of doing absolutely nothing. And buying from a company that has backdoored their products isn't my idea of great security. The latest company to backdoor their products is Gigabyte (motherboards). Once a company has done this you can never trust them again. I used to buy a lot of Gigabyte gear, but I'll never do it again.

>>78681 If that's all I was doing, I would get like a 2015 MacBook Air or something (before they got the weird keyboards). They just work, they run linux well, you can get them cheapish (200-300 dollars) and they'll have a better build quality than anything else you could get at that price.

>>78689 run linux on a mac? they are nice pieces of hardware. My Macbook Pro 2017 screen is bad. might opt for an Air when i cant use it anymore

>>78681 >Pinebook Pro If you are going that route Framework, MNT Reform, and System76 are other options. >>78687 It is because Safe Boot on the UEFI that you werent able to install Linux most likely. >>78689 >>78690 MacOS has some 4.4BSD-Lite2 and FreeBSD code in it so FreeBSD might potentially have good hardware compatibility too plus there exists a project someone is trying to reverse engineer running MacOS apps on a FreeBSD based operating system they are making but no idea how long that could take but I assume faster than ReactOS has been reverse engineering Windows. Though the M1, M2, and M3 chips have unpatchable security flaws so youd have to opt for M4 if that is what you wanted. I have some 20 old Dell laptop my sibling owned and the case is very well built except for the network switch cover that broke off, for being a brand known for cheapness it seems the average laptop used to be built as well as Apple products. So many laptops flex too much. I had a Toshiba Satellite have the hard drive stop because I picked it up with one hand over where the drive was, the case had flexed enough for my thumb to halt the HDD spinning.

Get a pinebook if you're just gonna play with linux and browse the web. Don't be a consoomer and buy something expensive for something an ibm thinkpad does perfectly in 2024.

>>78690 Linux runs very well on older macs 2015 and earlier, better than on most windows laptops. 2017 might be too new but you would have to try for yourself

Is there any news about the musebook? It was supposed to start shipping three weeks ago, but I haven't seen anything since. I was thinking of buying one after waiting for proper reviews (the pre-release reviewers only got an un-bootable machine).

>>79239 Dunno, Apple's BIOS/UEFI being proprietary and having internet and disk access looks like a redflag to me
Neuromancer · 2024-08-11 17:38
>>79240 Back when Apple computers were using Intel chips they refused to use the standard Intel ME because they said it was too privacy invasive and had a custom one made that removed some features. So the company does seem to care about that stuff to some degree, or at least it did under Steve Jobs likely since he wanted privacy for himself, I find the current guy less reliable but still better than anything coming from Microsoft or Google who are a lot more active in intentionally spying on people for business and for the government. About disk access isnt that required for secure boot to work? I think some updates also work that way.

>>78668 On the more expensive end, Framework and System76 are really good.

>>78668 If you want to save money, go buy a used business laptop. Never buy used computers from consumers because the computer has some kind of problem if they are selling it. There is also the possibility that they are stolen. Plus business computers are always more clean. I recommend Lenovo ThinkPads, Dell Latitudes and HP ProBooks/EliteBooks. I think that higher end Acer laptops are also pretty good. Be sure to check whether it has soldered memory or not (always avoid soldered memory if you can. But sometimes the pricepoint can be just too good to ignore..). I recommend getting a laptop with Ryzen CPU if you can. But honestly Intel does make as good CPUs as AMD. The main difference is that AMD offers usually better performance at lower prices than Intel. Be sure to watch a disassembly video on YouTube. You want to be able to replace the SSD and possibly upgrade the RAM. Some posters ITT recommend Apple MacBooks but I have heard that it's not as easy to install Linux on them. That being said, I don't have personal experience with them. >https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/Apple >https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Apple_MacBook_Pro_13-inch_(2020,_Intel,_Four_Thunderbolt_3_Ports)

dell outlet store, can get basically brand new refurb business class laptops for half or a quarter of the price, comes with warranty. I'm sure HP has something equivalent. I am not a fan of modern lenovo.
