Supersonic internet

Hey, I’ve been recently thinking about hyperspeed internet. Have an occupation where not showing up on time might result in lethal legal and physical repercussions, the equipment isn’t enough. Move around lot.
Are there ways to increase the speed of the internet utilising some shortcuts that rich people use for fast communication or in military bases or say sth akin of the sort? Has anyone implemented that?
The Fin · 2024-06-21 05:01
Unrelated, but what do you people use fast internet for? 2 MBit/s is more than enough to be comfy, 30 MBit/s is mind blowing and anything above you'll likely never need at all.

You'll need to specify what you want with more detail. You want to move around without missing stuff? Sat phone. You want low latency, or do you want lots of bandwidth? I know starlink can provide low latency but I don't know the details or pricing.

are we talking latency or bandwidth or both
If you pay you can cut out some of the middlemen and be your own ISP or whatever but thats a bit of a hassel, most people I know don't do this but its an option.
Military stuff is not all that great in what Ive seen. To the extent they care, its also often more about *some* connection in rough conditions, as opposed to great connexion in optimal conditions. And a lot of that doesn't work too great.
If you want to just communicate to a specific location very effectively, then often the best option is a bespoke network that doesn't need to touch the internet at all.

Unironically 5G
5th generation infrastructure was supposed to enable both high bandwidth and low latency with almost persistent coverage. The idea was to use 5G to integrate large data consuming systems like autonomous vehicles and wearables that process lots of data.
Gigabit speeds with seamless communication all the time. Unfortunately telecom companies are too greedy to actually implement the system as designed, and most people are fine with 4G for watching TikTok and facebook, so the incentive was not there.
Op, are you Ukranian and upset that Elon Musk keeps turning off your internet before you drag the west into WW3?

If you didn't want to get dragged into ww3 you needed to stop giving weapons from the very beginning. You are the ironic creator of all your own problems.

honestly both, i just need fast access to desktop internet during travel/ on the go, but online i see that latency is often more crucial than bandwidth when it comes to speed

what kind of a bespoke hidden network?

sat phone wont do since its for the computer

a lot of sat phone systems aren't great as I recall either. It gives you a reliable connection in strange places, but thats not a *fast* connection neccesarily. IDK how they are nowadays. Starlink I thought wasn't permissive of 'roaming' either.

So what is the alternative then?
Seems we’re being told 1) military stuff isn’t that good
2) host a vps (or something of the sort)
3) some tech like sat or starlink (120$/ month min)
could a pinephone be taught to do the trick

>2) host a vps (or something of the sort)
I dont see how a VPS solves the problem at all. If I'm in the jungle without cell or internet service, my VPS can be chugging along very happily but it doesn't help OPs situation at all. If I'm not misreading OP basically wants to be able to stream live, high definition video from his hut in the middle of antartica, or on his houseboat, or in the Andes. This is not an impossible problem to solve, but it requires special infrastructure. In the middle of Los Angeles it also requires special infrastructure, but millions of other people want it, too, so its cheaper for you personally. In the antarctic hut, its pretty much just OP paying.

a vps wouldnt, thats the point of the post - need better alternative

It gives you so much freedom a leeway. You can download a multi-gig program and try it out almost immediately.
Obviously if you don't do much on the web and aren't a data-hoarder, then 10mbit/s is more than enough, but as soon as you try doing anything data-heavy with the outside world, you run into issues.
