TempleOS General
bluecurve · 2024-06-14 12:43
I'm writing a TempleOS distribution dedicated to Lain going by the assumption: "What if Lain were real?" To my surprise, I noticed that Terry's work is barely discussed on Lainchan. I thought that maybe we could get a TempleOS/HolyC development general going.

I will provide simple HolyC example programs if someone asks.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. Jesus said "I will rebuild this temple in three days." I could make a compiler in 3 days.)
Hagbard Celine · 2024-06-14 21:22
How would you be dedicating it to Lain? I could understand making your own OS based on it but forking TempleOS to a distro of it, I dont know. Would Terry at any point have even liked that?

I'm not sure either. But TempleOS was meant for recreational proramming, Terry made it incredibly easy to make your own Distro of it. Also, to answer your question, I use a custom dictionary instead of the Vocabs.DD.Z file, tried to make it look like the operating system you navigate in the SEL PSX game (though I made this optional, I liked the original theme more), at the moment I'm working on the other HPET dependent programs.

just leave TempleOS alone

even if it has no real world use cases, it's still fun to hack around on an esoteric OS and teaching you a lot of things that most people never learn these days. There around 15 million web devs, but only a small handful of low level esoteric programmers

I don't agree with every change done to TempleOS in the TinkerOS fork and this is one of such cases. But despite that TinkerOS has lots to offer in my opinion.

If you are going to do this I suggest trying to add some digital scrying techniques as ways of communicating to Lain different but along similar lines to what Terry did. Like a screen of random visual + auditory static (like on analogue TVs) that instead of using a random computer generation alone take in other sources of input to be part of it like give it access to the microphone to detect noises in the range of electrical frequencies. Then you just gaze at it and see if you think you see or hear anything in this snow. Could have two modes black and white snow or color snow.
Anonymous · 2024-06-15 18:43
>>78073
On second thought. Black and white might be too much just make it monochrome like first image as one mode and full range that CRT tvs would produce in the other. Im not sure the best way to produce the right look of static. Im not suggesting insert images into it, that would defeat the scrying purpose. I suggest reading into scrying to get a better idea of what I am talking about. Historically scrying was usually done either using a candle flame or smoke plumes or an obsidian mirror or something along those lines.

We need a compiler for Holy C that works st least on lonux, Holy C is a great language that would be used in lots of fields, any ideas?

I'm thinking about porting ELIZA to HolyC, unfortunately writing something like this in a C dialect is a lot of work. Reading through the HolyC documentation now. I don't know if I'll go through with it.

What's the feasibility of running TempleOS or the lain fork on baremetal? I know one guy put TempleOS on a t60 and another guy did it on an x200. I have an old x60t that I'd love to revitalize as a TempLainOS machine.

Name suggestion
BUNREIN
BUNLAIN
分玲音
This is from bunrei 分霊 the process of dividing a shinto kami to be re-enshrined and the kami itself and Rein / Lain 玲音 who's name has the character for tinkling sound of metal or jewels and the character for sound. There was a period where Japanese shinto shrines were attached to Buddhist temples due to a syncretism of the religions. This indirectly alludes to TempleOS in the name without being too on the nose and conveys the intent to anyone who gets the word play.
bluecurve · 2024-06-20 05:53
I have compiled a list of Serial Experiments Lain FF from 2000 to 2006 that seemed appropriate to use for passages. Now all functions from TempleOS are useable.

Glad someone liked it. Might want to check with someone natively Japanese or otherwise fluent to make sure I didnt make a mistake when trying to do word play. It may be it can only be written in katakana or roman letters to make sense being a name of an OS, not entirely sure.

There are still some problems with making a complete ISO file that need to be addressed and I have to replace my server's fan, but it will be published on an onionsite as Public-Domain.

So that's for the binary and code on an onionsite only? Why? Because you want to host on your own server but that is only way you are aware of to not expose your server IP address? Am I getting that right?

This gave me a funny idea. A VM that will automatically run a virtual machine of itself inside of itself which will run a virtual machine inside itself until ram usage overloads and crashes the computer from the infinite VMs.
bluecurve · 2024-07-21 08:25
I will start anew, the distribution will be called "Rainfall Operating System". The main goal will be communication and interaction with your waifu/husbando through random number generators. I know this might not interest many but I will share the software nevertheless along with python software serving the same purpose.
While I respect Terry and his work, this will no longer be a religious operating system. This will simply be a personal project I'd share if people are interested.

You can use HolyC on Linux, too!
There have been other attempts as well. I remember there being a HolyC interpreter and another HolyC compiler (IIRC).
What is TempleOS?
You can download original TempleOS releases from https://archive.org/details/TempleOS_ISO_Archive
But note that Terry deleted some stuff between versions (1 example of this happening was deletion of After Egypt in some later versions of TOS).
If you want to run TempleOS, you need to use qemu (or vmWare). You can find Terry's qemu scripts at https://templeos.org/Downloads/QEMU/
VirtualBox works but it doesn't support sound becauseTempleOS needs pcspkr.
Terry's videos:
>https://archive.org/details/TerryADavis_TempleOS_Archive
Godwords in Bash ( if you boot TOS, you can just hit F7 ):
#!/bin/bash
# This code is in Public Domain
# This prints random words from the Linux dictionary.
# Note: TempleOS uses other text sources instead of the UNIX words file
# Original TOS godwords code in HolyC can be found at https://github.com/cia-foundation/TempleOS/tree/archive/Adam/God
echo "$(shuf -n 32 /usr/share/dict/words --random-source=/dev/urandom | tr '\n' ' ')"
The first TempleOS fork: https://github.com/minexew/Shrine
Since then, there has been ZenithOS, ZealOS and others.

>"Cleanup some unfortunate language that was left in TempleOS."
It's shame that they deleted Terry's writings! The original copies could have been kept if they would have been obfuscated with rot13 and there could be program to deobfuscated them, and a note about the original contained language that some may consider offensive.
